The Supercaliber was Gary Fisher's top of the line bike back in the year 2000. It came with their modern genesis geometry, which basically was a long reach frame with a short stem. Very precise steering! That was after Trek bought them, and then disappeared them after a few years. I guess there's still a bit of the Fisher's influence around their factory.
I have ridden enduro bikes since I started MTB a couple years ago, then a couple months ago I impulse bought a Supercaliber 9.8 I cannot believe how much fun XC bikes are and how good the Supercal is.
Don't get the desire to over fork bikes unless you really are going off that 15ft drop off, much less painless getting to the top of a trail, often more fun going back down (unless you do attempt said 15ft drop off on your 100mm travel)
There’s something to be said about a lighter weight bike. During the early 90s, I was descending a trail with some buddies and for some reason (insanity maybe?), I spontaneously bunny hopped a 1 ft high trail break made from logs at speed. I had never done it before and just went for it and it was a clean hop at high speed. I would never have been able to do it with a 30+ pound bike; but on my 25 pound Fat Yo Eddy, it was no problem. XC bikes may not be able to do 5 foot drop offs, but they can be a lot of fun because they’re so light and zippy.

@@rolux4853 I have to be Honest Here after 1x10 Its just ridiculous, So many of the middle gear are always skipped. Curtis F.R I was thinking about wireless brakes. You need them to be instant. With a cable there is no delay. Like wireless shifting. The has to be some kind of delay. I don’t want a delay on my braking that’s for sure.
@@josiahgolding7826 wireless gears are supposed to be faster and more instant according to everyone I've heard talk about them. It's the fact that the batteries might run out or something might block the signal then you'd be in trouble.
bullet Bros. zzyzx fork designed by hanebrink, required constant cleaning and greasing of stanchions and ridiculously thin and small bushing to keep them from binding. Tubing looked lowest grade available I think you could even seen seams in it. Raced it all 1997 season and despite constant attention needed was still a big step up from my 3" marzocchi dh3. Jan karpiel of karpiel bikes went on to make an aftermarket bushing and dust wiper upgrade with a foam ring inside to hold some lubricant that helped slightly. stepped up to an intense m1 from my intense prototype with a white brod ud150 the next season and the white bros form was world's better.
A question on the Cannondale Lefty: Wasn't it introduced in XC racing (or ar least an XC version of it)? I remember seeing a rider in the 2012 London Olympics racing with it. The problem with racing being your R&D is that while it delivers products that make you go faster, it doesn't necessarily produce products that make riding more fun. It's like with cars--just because a car has more power, a higher top speed, more grip, etc., a Miata will almost always be more fun. Bigger wheels are faster--but smaller wheels are more fun. Electronic & wireless may be great for racing, but when you're like my family who lost power for weeks after a hurricane, your bike is dead because you can't recharge a battery. That's especially stupid when you need to conserve gas because you can't just go to the station to fill up. Slacker head angles certainly help you ride fast, but there are so few riders out there going fast enough for it to be an improvement. That angle also makes normal riding sluggish on ordinary, level singletrack. When mountain biking morphed into motocross and everything had to get so much _more_ , prices went through the roof. Sure, if you are one of these guys racing & bombing off cliffs, get a $6k bike. But there are 100x more people out there who have no need for all that, but still get stuck with the weight penalty & costs of it all. It's disgusting that it's so hard to find a full suspension bike (because some of us are old and need to curb the abuse our joints take) that weighs less than 35 lb that's good for a 20+ mi singletrack instead of aspirations of the X-games.
dMb I kinda disagree with you there. I think there are still bikes that are plenty fun and built solely for that purpose and fun is subjective of course. Personally my idea of fun IS going as fast as possible and being stable through it all. A slacker head angle does help me with that as does a longer bike and even with that I’m not stuck with that dynamic being my only option. “Downcountry” bikes or lower travel trail bikes could be exactly what you’re looking for. The cost, however is absolutely ridiculous, even with the rationale given for it I won’t ever quite understand how a big toy can cost more than a rather good motorcycle or used car. I hope you find the bike for you, we all deserve to have fun in our own way
dMb: Every generation is dominated by Luddites. All these Luddites think their music (“their” being almost always their late teenage years) during their generation was best, their comedians were best, their cars were best, their TV shows, ad naseum... Well you’re wrong. Time marches ahead. Change is the only constant. And the long arc of change strongly bends towards improvement when dealing with technology. (There is an argument this may not be the case concerning human dominated mega-ecosystems - tropical rain forests, coral reefs...)
Prototyping is going to be much faster and far more prevalent than ever thanks to the new 3D printing technology.
