@@ljekatt And again, realistic? For what that fork cost you could get a Trek Marlin and upgrade it to 1x12. Nobody needs all the bells and whistles, and most people out there are looking at spending around a thousand dollars. One of the best videos I've seen from you guys, we have exactly the same mindset of what a bike should be and also riding it, simple, just grab it, shimano, no charging batteries, enjoying the nature around you, riding solo, silent, birds and then find that really fun short decent that you can walk up 10 times and have a blast, then ride home and drink a cold beer. I can relate to Doddy and his "set-and-forget" component choices and the simple satisfaction of having fun on local trails with a bike that keeps it fun.
I can relate to how you're feeling. A few years after I moved into my house the forest service built 30 miles of singletrack with the trailhead directly behind me. Mostly XC, but there's a lookout point with a nice, very rowdy, 1 mile decent to break it up a bit. I've been riding it out of convenience for 11 years, but really learned to appreciate every aspect of my backyard trails during lockdown. Even now that it's a little easier to drive out to other trails and ride with friends, which is great, I still find myself hitting the 'ol backyard loop 3 times a week, or so. 👍

GMBN consistently has the best production value among TH-cam videos on just about any subject. Great job, guys. I really enjoyed all the time spent on this project, both in front, and behind the lens.
Honestly I struggle to connect wit Doddy as presenter, but this time, this time he got me. The bike build process, story and cinematography was just brilliant.
The look on Doddys face says it all. Building something up from scratch is one of the best feelings in the world. Then sitting back and seeing something that beautiful, that was nothing but a bucket of parts... AAAHHHH!!! Its amazing! its like the super satisfactory feeling we used to have as kids, when we finished the day long lego build.
Honestly, it was amazing to see you enjoy something so much. I would love to see everyone on GMBN get their own custom bike. What is Blake's perfect bike, vs Neil"s, vs. Rich's, vs some of the camera crew perhaps? I know it isn't cheap, but man would that be awesome to just see everyone create their own perfection.
Love the video. I ride my "cheap and nasty" MTB daily for fitness, riding laps for a few hours along a creek walking track. The ride is simple, but therapeutic. The best part is hitting the pedals at 04:30, and its just you and a tunnel of light from your head-stem and helmet lights. By 05:30 nature starts to wake up and the morning silence transforms into the chatter of waking birds. By 06:00 you are getting pretty tired, but the glow of the sunrise inspires you to complete that last lap of the creek and head home. That's what mountain biking means to me. It's not all about what you are riding, its about the journey.
Doddy, Once again you have made a video that captures the heart and soul of why mountain biking exists. You have such a creative and intuitive approach to the sport and being able to help us "see the forest through the trees". Your knowledge of technical and gear, combined with your down-to-earth personality makes watching these videos such a joy. You are a Mountain Biker Poet. Thank you, Chris
Great video! About the best MTB video I’ve seen in AWHILE! Super interesting and the truth on what it is all about. Kudos! Sweet build and better riding. Outstanding video/photo quality 10/10
This was one of my favorite videos you’ve made so far. You shared the practical aspects of a workhorse drivetrain and used the “dream” portion of the video to choose a nice frame and fork.
It's good to see xc / down country presented as a fun ride, instead of a chase for trophies. My entry level XC hardtail may not be as capable as all the other MTB but it's always a fun ride and I get to feel the sun, the wind, the occasional rain on my face. Thank you Doddy
Doddy, long time viewer first-time commenter. Having started mountain biking around about the same time as you, I really enjoy your passion for vintage and appreciate your technical insights. I really enjoyed this video, not just the awesome bike build but also a little bit of insight into why you choose a short travel bike and your appreciation for a bike that's capable and precise, fun up and down. There is something magical about these new short-travel bikes, having had about 15 year break, the capability of a modern fun cross country bike is so impressive and getting out for multi hour rides up and down is so great for stress relief. Great video, keep up the great work and enjoy that SB100, it's one heck of a bike.
Awesome Bike Doddy! I always say when someone asks me what my favorite trail is, I always say “whatever trail I happen to be riding that moment”. The same goes for when they ask me which bike is my favorite. Great video and I also agree with all of the above mentioned about why you love mountain biking. It is my escape, it is my exercise, it is my therapy, it is my key to eternal youth. I love riding my bikes. All of them.
Can you do a segment on the types of rear triangle linkages available for rear suspension bikes? I’d love to hear about comparisons and evolution of linkages.
It’s is great to see A presenter not go for the highest end stuff and talk about why he loves to ride weather with a mate or alone exactly the way I feel much appreciated
Now close your eyes and change the accent a bit, is that Jeremy Clarkson I am hearing. You bring to the mountain biking world the way Top Gear brought automotives to the general public. Keep up the amazing content. Also, that is one sweet bike!
A man after my own heart. For me, this is exactly what mountain biking is all about. I love climbing and exploring my local woods and trails on my short travel, XC/trail bike. Refreshing to see a video that isn't simply focused on belting downhill as fast as possible.
Nice build Doddy, but the fox components are too obvious to me. If I could build a bike without money limiting me, I think it would be a titanium full suspension bike with a pinion drivetrain. Probably a custom frame since Ti full sus are super rare. Springy bits would be 130-150mm from DVO of Öhlins. Definitely a coil shock. Drivetrain from Shimano makes sense to me, and should be XT. Brakes from Trickstuff or Hope. Wheels carbon, with silent hubs by onyx. Rubber wise, I would love to try the new Versus tires. Oh well... I’ll just keep on dreaming....
So easy to get carried away with the latest and greatest, this is a great reminder that what matters most is the enjoyment and simplicity of the ride. Nice job Doddy!
I think the past 16 months have led a lot of folks to reconsider aspects of their lives and simplify where needed. Less stress, more time for enjoying the things in life that make one happy. Cheers to that! The past few months have rekindled my love of biking, after a couple of decades of being distracted from it. One small silver lining in this Covid Cloud...
Just ordered my new modern mtb, this video just confirmed that a XC bike would be best for the type of riding I would be doing, being a newbie you easily get distracted by the cool features of trail bikes and get confused as to what to get. Great video.
I believe this is one of the nicest and most personal video's you guys ever posted. The editing is also different from what you guys normally post. I'm a fan!
U just said what i always have felt and think of mtb, this is just the feeling i have when riding. It's not about being fastest and winning races, it's about getting some peace of mind in the great outdoors with your mates. best mtb video on youtube, great work!
Thanks for your wonderful insight, the bike building was wonderful but you also touched on the emotional part “The mental health benefits of riding a bike you love and spending time alone with your thoughts.” Thank you Dody! Russ in Australia.
Just compleated a up hill sunny day torture ride. Started by doing a time test for next weeks hospital apointment 30 min and then i went bike climing 1.5h. ride home 30 min downhill. Loved it
Favorite GMBN video right here. This was special, it really needs to be a series for each presenter to describe their perfect bike for their perfect ride. and the personality in the video just makes watching soo much more gratifying, Doddy is just soo authentic, no one has to conform to an exact discipline of riding style. just do what suits you for what you ride the most. and optimize that to your preference.
This was the best GMBN Tech episode ever. To think... All of this time I have wondered if I was more of a Martin, a Blake, or a Neil type rider, but now I know I’m unquestionably a Doddy. I love doing the stuff that scares me, but that’s not what keeps me coming back to riding my bike. I ride because riding a mountain bike around exploring things locally is just plain fun.
I have struggled watching GMBN content recently, but this video has me ready to get my bike out and go ride!! This hit me hard with why I like riding my bike, thanks Doddy for genuinely sharing why mtb is the greatest thing I can do for myself! Cheers
Brilliant edge/perspective/capture during lockdown Doddy. Sitting on a bench reflecting, looking at your build, with the backdrop what you love riding it on. Special moment that hit me in the feels. We all get it. Well done mate. Chapeau 👍
I live at the bottom of cleeve hill in Gloucestershire and during lockdown I've been doing 20 miles in an afternoon, it clears the head really well. I'm really lucky to grow up here but I have to agree with you. Bike parks are great but the long uphills with the rewarding downs are so much better personally. Great editing btw
Best video on GMBN for personal reasons :) I feel the same way about mountainbiking as Doddy... being outside in nature by myself, challenging myself on long climbs, taking in amazing views that very few people can see... I just wish I had trails at my doorstep, too!
Love this video and how Doddy presents and works, one of his Tech videos is what got me hooked on the GMBN channels. The big thing for me on this video is his views and mentality on mountain biking, it speaks to being able to find something in whatever your riding that you can bite into and enjoy. I don't feel quite as weird about really enjoying the small sections of dirt around my home amongst all the asphalt. That bumpy section of dirt with trees to thread through, those thin dirt hills between fences and trees that require that small bit of climb and side swaying to a steeper downhill drop, enjoy the hell out of those on an urban ride.
This is very much of my own heart. I feel at my very best just being out there with my bike. I do prefer an enduro build however. Mainly because my local terrain can be pretty damn brutal at times. I don’t mind suffering on the climbs. Really enjoyed this format. Would like to see something of this nature from all of you. See what everyone’s raw passion is on the bike
I appreciate Doddy’s approach to a practical XC bike build. A Yetti is beyond my pocket book but I will be using Shimano components including XT on my build. Thanks for this reminder of why I am doing my build.
Last year I purchased a Giant Trance Advanced Pro 2 29 Carbon frame and wheels with 115 at the rear and 130 up front... Mates said it wouldn't be enough travel but with the wheels/frame geometry etc I absolutely love it.. Perfect for trails where I live
NICE!!!! You showing us a different side of you. Pure Passion for Pure Riding with YETI, you living the dream. Even the video is shot is such a way that makes you feel the love of cycling, kudos to the cameraman. This video is also now my most favorite. Can I click on "thumbs up" a million times :)
Doddy, watching your videos make me into mtb world. Really love and appreciate your passion. This channel really inspired me to build my own bike. Thank you GMBN. LOVE YOU GUYS !!
Doddy, you nailed it. I rode the hills around Bath in 1988 (on MB-2) with a pair of Rasta's named Zeke and Zebe. Fantastic brothers and a fantastic day (and night I might add). Of all your videos this is a fav. Thanks!
I’ve been a GMBN fan since the beginning. This has probably been the video that has resonated the most with me. Thanks Doddy, nice to hear your thoughts. Don’t get me wrong I like most of the content you guys do. With this one you just captured the way I like to mtb.
We share the same philosophy on bikes almost exactly. Love the 6 inch travel enduro rigs, but spend most of my time on an XC/trail bike with XT running gear and top of the line suspension. Love the uphills, love surfing, and need a regular ride to get rid of work and life stresses. Great insight into what makes you tick. Really nice approach to the video. Keep up the good work.
More of this kind of stuff please! It's great to see how each of you really feel about bikes, what really floats your boat and what your ultimate bike would be for that purpose. Much more in tune with the riding lives of us normal people. I also love the long days close to home in the saddle on my own, such a great way to recharge the batteries and lose yourself in the moment. I love a day in the bike parks with mates on our Enduro and DH rigs but my perfect day would be on my short travel FS putting in the miles in stunning countryside with a cafe or pub stop en route. Thankfully during lockdown I've been able to do lots of 20 mile days from my front door despite living in a city! My Enduro bike is the dream spec bike in my collection but the short travel trail bike with dependable components is my most used by a big margin. It's due for replacement soon and it will be a hard act to replace.
I thought I was the odd one out but having watched you on this video youve just perfectly described how I like to 'mountainbike'. Gladd to know Im not weird!! The mountainbike shops always look down on me and consider me not to be the 'pro' rider but ive been riding for 40yrs. Thanks dudey, youve brought it home for me in this vid. Gav
I took my Scott XC bike I bought at the end of last season and by the time this season rolled around (and my broke ass leg healed) I had completely rebuilt the bike from frame up....which says a lot considering I bought it brand new never ridden and the only time I rode it with stock equipment I was still in a boot nd on a scooter so no real shredding. What I have come up with is a beast of a bike that is more fun than any full squish bike I have had. Scott Scale frame, Magura MT5 / MT7 mix on brakes (4 up front 2 out back) hitting Magura rotors 203/180, Hope pro 4 hubs with raceface arc 30 rims wrapped with Hutchinson Griffus tires (2.5 front 2.4 rear), GX drivetrain front to back, reverb dropper, RS Rekon fork at 120 with remote lockout, RaceFace atlas bar and custom grips with the bikes name...Maj Tom. And of course just little bits and pieces here and there like frame protection, peddles, bottle cages, saddle, etc. Was not by any means my dream build but once I got it done I will not go full sus again, this thing is too fun. Easy to pedal up 5 miles and solid enough to rock a full face and smash the descents. A lot of people are calling this type of build a Down Country thanks to pinkbike, well before I even heard that term I dubbed this my XXX-C bike, because it gets nasty and takes all I give it lol. Even rockin a custom decal I ordered on the downtube labling it XXX-C, confused my mechanic lol. And yes I have a mech. See I have no prob putting the bike together.....or riding the hell out of it, its keeping it rolling I have a deal with lol.

The look of sheer, unalloyed joy at that build. It's fantastic. Nice one, Doddy!
The new specialized evo!! And that's exactly the bike I'm getting in a few weeks. Beefed up xc for me as well
Love the video.
Wow, Extraordinary quality
Enjoy moment 4:27
Just satisfying on beat!
Doddy,
Once again you have made a video that captures the heart and soul of why mountain biking exists. You have such a creative and intuitive approach to the sport and being able to help us "see the forest through the trees". Your knowledge of technical and gear, combined with your down-to-earth personality makes watching these videos such a joy. You are a Mountain Biker Poet.
Thank you,
Chris
Wow, thank you Chris! Great feedback!
Great video! About the best MTB video I’ve seen in AWHILE! Super interesting and the truth on what it is all about. Kudos!
Sweet build and better riding. Outstanding video/photo quality 10/10
being a bit like gee miler, with all those scenic shots 8:14 and the beer 7:45 , a brilliant bike!!!!
What a great video - so relaxed, chilled and a personal inside to Doddy!!
I feel the same about solo riding!
Keep up the great work, :)
This literally has been a mustache ride! Love Doddy, could listen to him for hours and his bike of of choice is just amazing!
That was such a good, fresh take on a "bike build"-video! Thanks for that! :)
Best GMBN Video ever. You have outdone yourself doddy.
Super well made video! I love Doddy's filming! This was like a professional hollywood movie.
This was one of my favorite videos you’ve made so far. You shared the practical aspects of a workhorse drivetrain and used the “dream” portion of the video to choose a nice frame and fork.
Lovely build and I like the new format. Just some tan wall tires would finish it perfectly for me!
I'm with ya Mr Dodd. My Scalpel SE with 120mm and XT drivetrain is the best thing I have ever ridden.
Doddy's enthusiasm and the filming/editing for the clip made me emotional from a mtb build, test, and the monologue of enjoying the sport. Damn.
It’s is great to see A presenter not go for the highest end stuff and talk about why he loves to ride weather with a mate or alone exactly the way I feel much appreciated
Everything about this, from start to finish, made me smile. One of GMBN's best productions yet!
Why not Magura Brakes?
@@nicksynodinos8581 Trickstuff's brakes look dope, and they also have a whole lot of power.
how about formula suspension?
Am Vyxn a bit too mainstream, and as @minssosa points out; trickstuff are basically anchors strapped to bikes.
bananas stuff good call, haven’t considered.
Nice forks!
So easy to get carried away with the latest and greatest, this is a great reminder that what matters most is the enjoyment and simplicity of the ride. Nice job Doddy!
The way Soddy walks off from the bike once he has built it reminds me of gee milner
Doddy**
I think the past 16 months have led a lot of folks to reconsider aspects of their lives and simplify where needed. Less stress, more time for enjoying the things in life that make one happy. Cheers to that! The past few months have rekindled my love of biking, after a couple of decades of being distracted from it. One small silver lining in this Covid Cloud...
Daddy, this was one of your best ever.
Daddy?
Daddy Doddy 🥰
Choke me, daddy! 😋
he is the daddy
Just ordered my new modern mtb, this video just confirmed that a XC bike would be best for the type of riding I would be doing, being a newbie you easily get distracted by the cool features of trail bikes and get confused as to what to get. Great video.
with every part you were speccing on this I'm thinking YES! EXACTLY YES YES!!
That is an absolute beauty
this is the type of honesty we all appreciate
I believe this is one of the nicest and most personal video's you guys ever posted. The editing is also different from what you guys normally post. I'm a fan!
Best video Doddy has ever made. In fact, best video GMBN has ever put out. LOVE to just go out and ride...
Thanks for watching Russ!
This was excellent! It felt real, and I appreciate Doddy's true insight and design. Good job on this one, all!
How could anyone downvote this Video.
It is SUPERNICE! I loved the honesty about himself and what kind of riding he is actually doing day in day out.
I’ve never had a better time appreciating biking out my back door on my local trails than during Covid too....
I’ve ridden my local track like hundreds of times and still not bored, totally agree Doddy!
GMBN and Doddy are the real DEAL. Thanks for great content.
Nothing beats the feeling of riding a bike you custom built. There's a wholesome pride in it.
His approach to riding just speaks to me so much and I have so much respect for him.
It takes a very skilled camera man to make a fire road climb look epic. Beauty of a bike!
Riding a bike, again, takes you back to the time when you were 15 and this feeling is necessary and also incomparable👌
I love the video style and Doddy's point of loving the sport for the sake of being out there and just doing it really hit home
One heck of a video! " why i ride mountain bikes ", loving it Doddy!
