excellent video. no boring intro for half hour before any information. Informative and to the point. plus shows full fix quick and full fix. thumbs up will subscribe 👊
great video....calipers on the golf seen on lots of other cars so useful to other non golf owners like myself. the adjustment tip is clear and so too the camera footage. no silly music to ruin it.
you are very good to show this thank you ,,its great for folk who are not used of jobs like this , please do more videos ,, thank you , all the best for now
I feel like mine needs doing but cant be bothered taking wheels off to do it "properly". Will it work to adjust a little bit a time until it does come to the top in about 3 clicks?
Yeah, some people do that. Don't overtighten it though! Whole point of that dual lever by the nut is to even out tension to both calipers. If both of your calipers are in good condition, that should work.
Method 2 was the same as method 1 . You didn’t do anything different other than check the clearance between the stops on the callipers. What would you have done if they hadn’t been equal ?
5:56 these little things that you measure the gap on. Can I measure the same parts on both sides of the vehicle to find out if my car is braking enough on both sides? Basically: is this the way to see if it is equal braking on both sides? Im asking because I took my car to road safety inspection and both wheels on the left are not braking enough with the handbrake.
how did you make the cables become equal? I don't understand? the caliper already had a gap between the lever and the stop? you took the gap away then put the gap back again? I don't understand? I put 2 new genuine handbrake cables and it still goes up 10 clicks and the handbrake doesn't really work
That metal arch by handbrake lever (inside car) equalises pulling power for both cables. If you have new genuine cables installed correctly and you still can't get it right - it's likely to be faulty caliper(s). Unfortunately it's not the best design of VW. Yes - I loosened it and pulled back to have that gap in the video.
Before you loosened it, the cables were not equal. But after you tightened it, the cables became equal? How did this happen? You already had a slight gap between the lever and then stop, so I dont understand why you took the gap away, then put it back?
When I opened that adjusting nut - it was loose (I could have tighten it behind the scene, I don't remember by now, to show the idea that it needs to get loose first) + different camera angle later. But it doesn't matter - the purpose of the video is to show how it works. I took the gap away and tightened it again, because that's the procedure explained in both manuals I had about it - you loosen it to make sure that before you start tighten it they start from position of touching those stops. Cables inside the car don't have to be equal, the point of the equalising arch/lever - if the cables have slightly different length, it pulls them accordingly, because they supposed to have same resistance from levers on calipers, therefore inside where you tighten that nut they may have different length.
nice video, i did a change on the bushings on the rear bar, and the mechanic disconected the rear brake cables and he conected in a way that my brakes are not loose when not braking need to calibrate that tomorow thanks
Brake pads normally do rub brake disc a little bit, even if not braking... But if you need to adjust your parking brake - I'll be happy if this video helps you.
brake caliper in this car, adjusting hand brake automaticly, cilynder slide out more and fixes!!! :) but cables are diferent story, that what u are showing in this video!
Changed wheel bearing, disc, caliper, break hose, break pads and still the wheel is too tight. After few miles of driving, wheel is hot. Disc is burning hot. Is it something to do with hand break?
It's pretty normal for brake disc to be burning hot even after normal driving. But if everything is new, I'm not sure what can make your wheel tight. I would consult to some mechanic.
@@wawayltd it was very strange. I took the car to the same mechanic and he spent about an hour this morning. The hand brake was fine. He decided to clean some rust from the house where caliper sits/ fitted. He spraid brake cleaner as well. The wheel started spining much better than before. Im still not convinced it was the rust as it was only a tiny bit rust. I am still puzzled. I drove 55 miles and checked the wheel its still hotter than the other side but slight better. I do lot of motorway thats why I am worried. Thanks mate.
If you mean that lever on caliper, if it's loose, most likely you need whole new caliper. They sell them remanufactured. Maybe there's a way how to fix it at home, try to search. Personally, I'm lazy - I would go for new caliper. I may be wrong too..
@@wawayltd Here's a good one, just went to a mechanic, seems that I had different springs mounted that returns the rods, this solved most of the issue. The rest is due to handbrake cables difference in the way were mounted on the car and brakepads being stuck.
Thanks a bunch, man. I really appreciate your videos and the value they add to the TH-cam community of Car DIY'ers. Where is your accent from btw? It sounds Slavic to me. Czech? Ukraine? Russia?
hi how are you? today I finally managed to clean egr on my audi a3 1.9tdi. it's a 55 reg. when I checked the exhaust pipe it looked full of black sticky carbon . it seems to me that the exhaust manifold need to be removed and washed or cleaned with something strong like Mr muscle. I have read the Haynes manual and it says that the exhaust manifold is connected with the turbo therefore it comes out together. the manual also says to lower the subframe down from underneath to get the exhaust manifold out. I am just wandering if there is any other way of doing this
when i start to tighten up the 10mm nut to get 1mm gap between the caliper stop and a lever, my wheels arent spinning, recently replaced both rear calipers and both handbrake cables. cannot work it out what is the problem, so decided to undo 10mm nut so the parking brake fully engaged with the 3 rd click out of 7 clicks, because doing by vw manual my wheels used get warm... maybe i need to re bleed brakes?
Vilius uk If you recently replaced rear calipers, I believe they were bled. However, it's always nice to be sure that there is no air in the system. But with the new calipers and cables, if they are installed correct - I have no clue what could be wrong.
WheelsAndMotors i dont have a clue myself. after good drive wheels are slightly warm.but front one colder than rear. maybe not bern bled properly and caliper cylinders not working properly, or maybe something to do with pads and discs. they were bidding for a while
Probably worth checking pads, pressurise system and check for bubbles. Maybe new calipers are bad? Did they come with the warranty? By the way - brakes normally do get quite hot anyway..
Then most likely you have problem with one of the calipers. Those cables are set to pull on calipers equaly.. unless one of the cables stuck somewhere.
Thank you :) As I understand the only place to adjust cables is that nut. If they can't be adjusted with it, then there must be something wrong with the cable(s).
Sizes can be different. Even parts sellers will offer you different choices. Best thing - take your old one and measure it. And check with suppliers too.
Yeah, the car has seen better days. Bought it on eBay for 270 quid to tinker with it, it's officially off the road.. As for the garage, you know, some say - "size doesn't matter ;)"
Spot on. As others have already said, clear, concise, no BS or music. Exactly whats needed, exactly what you want.
Thanks :)
this is probably THE most descriptive example on handbrake maintenance i've seen, yet. other videos just adjust the nut inside the car
Thanks 😊👍

Method 2 was the same as method 1 . You didn’t do anything different other than check the clearance between the stops on the callipers.

Most likely it would be sign of a bad caliper, unless cable is badly stretched.

Sorry, both wheels on the left - do you mean front left end rear left? How does handbrake affect front wheel?
Or did I misunderstand?

I have a Audi A3 2006, need to exchange brake disks.
This vid is applicable also for my model?

And does the pistons need to be screwed or just pushed back?, to fit the brake pads on my model?
