- While the score is definitely favorable for Serena, I think Elena played more than enough good points to hold her own against the clear best player of 2002 and 2003 on her worst surface.
People forget how dominant Serena was here. She had lost one match in a slam since the 2001 US Open final. Under the circumstances, I think Elena did well.
This Serena was practically unbeatable.
I like the 2002 better, this one is less powerful

I just love when you upload rare Serena matches from the 1997-2004 era. The same matches get uploaded every few weeks or months. Your channel is a breath of fresh air. I hope we can get more Serena uploads as well. Also, it’s amazing how Elena was able to turn her serve around, especially her second serve, so late in her career. Elena’s ground game was always phenomenal, she always got her body weight moving forward and into the shot.

As for Serena, yes, I have a few more rare Serena matches, my Elena matches are getting less views lately it seems so I might need to spend some time on non-Dementieva content. Since you were so nice, would you prefer I post her Moscow 07 matches (final included) or 99 RG 3R and AO 00 1R? I'll also upload the 98 Munich F between Venus and Patty for another user, so whichever you pick you got three coming up soon.
As for this match, I think Serena intentionally hit to Elena's best shot constantly because when she attacked the backhand there was basically no real challenge and I think Serena would be bored otherwise. I always felt Serena did that in this matchup, it got the better of her a few times but this match really defined the outline immediately for how they would play each other in this H2H.
@@chriscze6153 yes, and it’s crazy because you can find matches from Venus for every year, tournament, and slam damn near. I would love to see the AO 2000 match before the others. IMO, Serena was a mess in Moscow. I think there have been an upload or two once upon a time of Serena in that French Open. The 2000 AO is like one of the few slams we’ve never seen at least a highlight from Serena. I’m definitely subscribed. Elena is a wonderful player, but she’s not going to pull in numbers the way Serena or Venus will. You have to be true tennis fans to pay attention to a player like her, and I don’t mean that in any shady way.
@@chriscze6153 Serena definitely is known to attack player’s strengths instead of their weaknesses like most people would do. Serena does it in almost all of her matchups against players. Elena’s serve made it easy for Serena though. It did get the better of her, but Serena in a tour tournament and Serena in a slam or premier mandatory are like night and day, especially back in the mid to late 2000s.
@@JCole-fg3rr Lmao sounds like you aren't much of a Venus stan. Yes, Serena was a hot mess in Moscow, but it was either the only time or one of two times she played there, and her QF/SF matches either aren't on YT or are in not great video quality. As for Elena not pulling in the numbers, you're right - why do you think my last three matches are Venus, Serena, and Sharapova? Usually those videos I post get 1k views within a few days but even those seem slower lately. I hope it changes soon, but I'm terrible at this algorithm thing.
The most incredible thing is Dementieva didn't even play that bad… Still 6/2 6/2 in 51 minutes.
Imagine being Dementieva or any of these other big hitting European players and then along comes Serena and Venus out-hitting and overpowering all of them. Amazing though to watch these commensurate players go toe-to-toe with the Williams sisters. Such a joy to watch again all these years later :)
Serena was furious after her loss to Justin Henin in that controversy over the hand raising for a 1st Serve at the French Open. She went into this Wimbledon with fire in her eyes... With all eyes heading towards a rematch with Henin in the semi Finals (Context for why she played so well in this tournament)
This was the start of Dementieva's resurgence that led to her 2004 season. After this, she had a good run in Toronto, reached the fourth round of the USO and then won back to back titles in Bali and Shanghai.
It is so unfortunate there is so little footage (at least good or complete footage) of Elena in 2003. I only have 8 or so matches of hers from 2003, and I think I've uploaded most of them already. I was going to post the 04 WB 1R loss next, but maybe it makes more sense to post her win over Rubin that year from the YEC to be the next one...

@@jmiller05 Her worst match ever? Well...she hit 20 winners which is lower than average for her for a three set match on a fast surface. Kleinova really went for it though, and she was a deserving winner. I finished watching the 05 LA SF against Dani - let's talk after you see that if I can't change your mind what her worst match ever is lmao
@@chriscze6153 Well we know she had duds against higher ranked players but Kleinova was outside the top 100 and had barely won matches on the main tour. Plus all I remember is Elena screaming in her mum's direction the whole time lol.
But feel free to convince me, it's been the best part of 15 years after all 🤣

You’ve been killing it with some of your videos, they are such rare finds! I know Elena is your favorite player and I’m sure other people have asked you this, but I’d love to see some more Serena videos if you are able to find them. Her R1-R4 matches from Wimbledon 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004 and RG 2001-2004 are so rare, most of them I’ve never even seen.
I don’t know how you do it or where you find these matches but keep up the good work! And please don’t be discouraged by TH-cam’s stupid algorithm or by matches you find being poor quality. Real fans will really appreciate it and I’m sure your channel will eventually grow because it’s really great!
Only some? :P Jokes aside, this is one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten, thank you so much. And trust me, if those matches were available, I am sure other tennis HL creators that have been in the game longer than me would have snatched on them by now. There is essentially only one major source for these rare Williams matches, and if that person doesn't have it, then they are lost to time, unless someone else pops up eventually with them.
I checked through his list, most of the 1R-4R matches you mentioned that are available are either a few points or some games in one set. A few are complete though, and those eventually I would cover because I see how much people appreciate these early rare ones.
Some insider info for you - the 98 USO 3R match against Spirlea got a copyright claim against it which hurt that video a lot, and my views haven't been the same since. Two more recent ones got claimed too (Elena/Amelie 01 FC and Amelie/Nastya 03 FC) and it's been downhill ever since. I'm glad the videos are still available, but the algorithm is doing its best to fuck me over, but hopefully things balance out later. Thanks a lot!
