This was the start of three grand slam wins in a row for Martina: here (the Australian open was played in December in those days), The 1982 French Open and then Wimbledon. Chris would then respond with three grand slams in a row herself: the 1982 US Open, 1982 Australian Open then the 1983 French Open.
Players who learnt the game prior to the 1970s generally did not. It used to be a foot fault if a player did not have at least one foot in contact with the court, at the point of when the ball hit the racquet of the server. Players used to pivot the foot on the racquet side to permit the turning of the hip and shoulders through the service motion. Later, the rule changed, and players changed their service action, which generated more power because they could be airborne at the moment of impact.
Here Chris doesn’t win but at the end of this year Chris ends up number one for the year, 7 years as number one by the ITF. Since she was 3-2 in wins against Martina in 78 was voted number one for 78(74,75,76,77,78,80,81 she never again got the year end number one although was one set shy of it in 85, close in 82. Martina sent Chris in to the gym in order to compete better with Martina became a better player in 84-86 than any year she was number one. I don’t think she’d change a thing. She loved trying to get better and Martina pushed her to do so.
I remember reading the results in the newspaper and how Chris made a dramatic fightback but lost the match.....compared to now when you can get every results online straight away 1981 felt like the dark ages.....heck we didn't even have the primitive VCR until the end of December 1981 !

@@darealgeegaming Thank you. We all have our favourites and Martina was great too. My favourite players were Evert and Graf mostly because of their style of play and I couldn't choose between them. There were of course many other greats because it's not just about titles.
All I can say is thank goodness the rackets evolved! It's really hard for me to respect the 'greats' when tennis in the 70s and 80s essentially played like a middleground between modern tennis and badminton; it's basically not the tennis any Gen Xers grew up knowing as such although it has recognisable movements and technique.
How do you think it is that Martina, in her mid 40s, was still good enough in the early 2000s to beat a top 20 player in singles and take a set off a top 5 player?
the Australian was played on grass until 1988- this is grass, though both Chris and Martina would say it was slower grass than Wimbledon (at the time, Wimbl grass was slowed down in early 2000s to neutralize the big servers some)
@@aagold76 I think Evert really liked play on the aussie grass way more than wimbledon or england's grass as yes, it played more like a firm hard court, then grass. today wimbledon's grass is now more like a hard court as well with a grass topping...
Martina’s net skills are incredible. Chris Evert very precise. No wonder they had such an enduring rivalry.
Absolutely❤🔥🔥
greatest rivalry of all time

Chris Evert - 5 grass slams, 10 clay slams, and 3 hardcourt slams
Why Evert is not jumping when serving?
