We are loving family that live in Bamboo Huts in Rural Thailand. Damo (me), Ryan (my husband), and Otis (Our Son) spend our days taking care of the land and the animals and enjoying each others company.
Formally Ryan worked for "The Coffee Club Thailand" Chain, but now we have opted for a simpler lifestyle, and living in "The Now". On the vlog we will show you what it is like to live in Rural Thailand, details on plants we grow on our land, and most importantly our honest and authentic selves, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Get some blackboard paint and paint a section of the wall or if the wall is too rough, put up a sheet of cheap Masonite or MDF board and paint that. Give the kids some chalk and let them at it.

Oh man, I once made my own LSA extract from Hawaiian Baby Woodrose. I had previously tried a low dose and nothing happened, so I chose to make it really potent to ensure a powerful experience. I went camping in the Delaware Water Gap, a beautiful natural area, took some anti-nausea medicine (big mistake because I could not induce myself to vomit once I realized I'd taken too much). My tent had real bugs and spiders on it, but they started expanding in size, and the trees were breathing. Not a big deal, but the body load was insane. Basically it felt like having a bad case of the flu, while tripping! I decided to go home, and there was a hospital on the way, so if I felt out of control, I was going to go to the emergency room. I made it home, stopping several times to check the tire pressure, since the LSA made me feel really low to the ground, and I thought my tired were going flat (which of course they weren't). I walked in and my father had rainbows shooting out of his head. He tried to have a conversation, but I told him I was sick. I laid in bed, with the room swirling, and intense auditory hallucinations (the outro to 'Wild Man' by J. Geils Band, where Peter Wolf ad-libs with passionate vocals, on a loop inside my head!). I didn't sleep the whole night, and I couldn't eat until the next afternoon. All told, the experience lasted longer than 24 hours, and I got no valuable insight from it at all - I was just grateful to have gotten home safely without having to go to the hospital (or worse if police had stopped me). I was preparing to move to Alaska and I nearly blew it by putting myself in such a dangerous position... I was only 23 at the time, and chalked it up to youthful stupidity. I've had some very positive experiences on various natural psychedelics, and I believe that they should all be legal and used responsibly. But my goodness, LSA is what I would call a "low quality psychedelic" as the negative effects were just too overwhelming and completely overshadowed any spiritual value I could have gotten from it... Anyway, just a word of caution! Not to mention, I would imagine taking a psychedelic in the extreme heat and humidity would be very unpleasant, even if the plant/drug were a higher quality one. My best advice would be to keep some strong benzodiazepines on hand, just in case you must terminate a difficult trip in a hurry. Or better yet, just stick with kratom. :-). Do you plan on making a video about your actual enthogenic experience in real time?
Thank you for sharing, I speak about the plants a lot but very rarely my experiences with them as I live in thailand and its not good to speak of such things, I have a vlog available on accident dosing with datura not too long ago. Agreed the body load of LSA Is not pleasant, in particular the vasoconstriction is causes is very uncomfortable. not for fun!

I did a few videos about kratom after it was legalized, mostly to tease my friends back in America, where the hysterical politicians whine about how kratom is some kind of "monster drug destroying our precious children"... Most of the hardcore experiences I had were a long time ago, and they were either in the USA or Europe... So, I'm not running around glorifying Yaba or anything, 5555... That LSA thing I mentioned happened in 2006. Access to appropriate medicine actually played a MAJOR role in my decision to finally leave America - It's really disgusting the way they treat chronic pain patients over there.
As I'm sure you know, Cambodia has very easy access to weak opioids, and in Thailand you can get Tramadol & Codeine easily and the doctors are much more sympathetic and respectful compared to those in Western countries. Kratom is actually much more effective than the pills, so I've totally switched - but I waited until it was legalized, and now it's totally out in the open here. I've written some articles which were published on Erowid.org (many more to come over the course of this year, as part of my Rock N Roll English project - as I mentioned, most of these experiences are from 15 - 20 years ago, and it's actually quite fun to jog the memory! Actually, when I feel too much negativity from the internet, Western media hysteria, etc, I'll deliberately seek out videos that are way more relevant to my current life - and your stuff is pretty close to the kind of thing I've been getting into. I have a tiny bit of experience with organic farming, and my wife and I are in the process of moving back to Chiang Rai to slowly build up a mountain resort. It will have a recording studio on the property, and lots of free beer for guests. My first thought was hmm that's going to be really tight on $200. The final amount of $350 is more realistic. I was surprised electricity is still quite a chunk of it. Solar power is the way to go but also requires a substantial investment. I never drew on the walls like Otis did but an idea for your wall might be this special chalkboard paint at that level not higher than the window and the kids can eat their heart out displaying their art 😉

Great video we are currently building in Amnat Charoen on farmland, I've found some of the local craftmanship exceptional for a fraction of western prices. Still a good few years until we can retire there but these vids help build up little tips for life in Thailand, cheers and good luck :)

12,770b - $400usd - $550aud - does not include nights out or Visa costs - let's not get into either of those lol.

Very interesting, and extremely well communicated vid, but I gotta ask.....you mentioned other foods like pasta and you bought loadsa veg etc, but I didn't hear you mentioning any meat, yet you have chickens and of course at least one pig taking centre stage...............do you have livestock on your small holding to eat or just for eggs and as 'part of the family'?
We will sometimes eat chicken if I kill one of hours myself - we no longer eat pork and beef- - and we eat eggs 🙏✌️😊

6,600 ain't a lot! I think trainee cops and conscripts get 6,000. I can live on nothing; I can get nearly all my calories from a rice cooker and a 20 baht bag of curry each night, but I wouldn't want to inflict it on anyone else. I suppose 3,000 for a studio means that the effective budget is 9,000, and I could get by on that so long as I didn't have a heart attack. I'd need to eat a Sumo wrestler Basho bowl of rice each night, with either a 20 baht bag of chilli chicken livers or a tin of tinned fish through it, with five baht of greens and 100g of peanuts. 2,500 calories and 100g of protein in one hour long meal! I think if I was skint I might go for khao klong - brown rice - soak it, and cook non-absorption, throwing away the water. That gets the arsenic right down, but you get all the roughage and minerals. Brown rice spoils more quickly, which is why it's more expensive in the West. But in Isan it's no dearer; often slightly cheaper.

Can’t believe the price of electric for you guys. Has it gone up vastly or is my memory terrible?
It would be 3000 without the solar, admittedly its for all the complex ( 3 homes and 8 people) plus my hot tub which is the main culprit!
That’s good to know, was going to say about a thousand baht ought to cover it for a single home with aircon even? Just a guess. But my memory isn’t great or quite vague in those times and it was along time ago now. The 2000s. Think 500 sterling inlcuding rent would be a minimum for myself. But I’ll like to be at a grand a month to be comfy - for any eventualities. Love this vlog by the way. It really appeals to me. After 6 years of wild times there be nice to just find somewhere to settle and live a simple peace-filled life. Amazing what we become when we clean ourselves up and realise things we never knew before -see life very differently now. ❤️
Just goes to show that living on Thai basic wage is extremely difficult. Most of the poor Thais need to borrow money from lone sharks at high interest rates to survive . The poor have no money thus paying more if they need to borrow money.

I live in udon thani I own my house same as you no rent just water and electricity.but I'm a drinker about 3 days a week in town at the bars non smoker I reckon we spend 50 thousands a month wife and 1 son.

However, it means nothing since you left out two of the most important items:
STRESS (you must show how do each of you handle it and solve problems as a team)
OVERSPENDING (you must show where you get the money to SPEND DOUBLE what you have)
This is like learning to swim without getting your feet wet.
In reality a person on minimum wage would not be able to spend double of what he gets.
To be a successful experiment you must show YOURSELF you can actually swim.
Here in the USA, many people easily solve this by:
1. stop paying rent, that works very well since "Uncle Sam" won't allow evictions.
2. start shoplifting, the store won't even call the police, since the police will not reply, because it is only a misdemeanor if the value is under $1000.
3. start "panhandling" it works very well here.
I agree it means nothing and it was an unsuccessful experiment.
As I say in the vlog, it was an "epic fail".

Such as: fighting like dogs over the last slice of bread. Or Chairman Mao's experiment in 1960 that cost 40 Millon lives including cannibalism.

as an x-aviator realistic training was important and keeps you alive. I really liked your wife's approach to the kids writing on the walls, by having the kids to attempt to correct the damages.
All these vegetables are so healthy, and gosh so cheap $11 USD. It would cost me over $50 in US, esp Hawaii.
Another great video! It's very interesting 🤔 to see how the cost of living varies from place to place. Tis is so adorable! I never minded the coloring on the walls (in fact, I would sometimes join in on the fun)! A useful tip for removing crayon is by using a hair dryer (doubt you use one, maybe Damo)and heat the crayon marks and dab a cloth on it. A clothes iron on low on top of a cloth would work too... much easier than painting every time. Thank you for sharing your beautiful family and knowledge with us 😁👍

Even though you needed more money for the month it is still less than living in the city. So many fresh vegetables for $11 USD! Learning to grow them would be awesome. At least worst to worst people could still go back to surviving in the country if needed. Good feeling of security to know this during these uncertain times. As always, enjoy seeing your family. Hey Ryan and Damo and Otis, a very good video and a challenge I do not want to do myself. I admit I do have a generous amount of money coming in each month and manage to spend most of it on one thing or another. This month it was jewelry but I will make a handsome profit in the end.
I was not surprised at your experiences until you came to your internet experiences. When I ever get to come visit with you I will give you information on how to cut that significantly. It will amaze you how cheap you can get it.
I am surprised you don't have a garden to grow the food you consume on a daily basis. I know people in the United States that have a quarter acer lot and there house takes up a big chunk of it and they grow enough food to feed themselves and lots to give to the people in their neighborhood. I would think that would a no-brainer for you guys. That is one of the first things we will do when we move to the country.
Just remember, the more garden you grow the less grass you have to cut.
Like to add a note on electricity in BKK: l was living in a 25sqm apartment and electricity costs were Bht1400 in cold season and about Bht1800 in hot season. Then l moved to an older house in BKK and had suddenly to pay Bht3000+ with a new aircon, washing machine etc. We checked with the authorities but nothing wrong with the counter. In the meanwhile my daughter lived in a new house and spend never over Bht1500 for 2 aircons running almost all day. So be aware the costs can vary. All our costs were directly charged, no landlord involved who usually mark up.

If you have any land, you shouldn’t be buying any vegetables at all. Grow things that are easy first and in enough quantity.
Moringa (marum), sweet leaf (katum) are the most nutritious and easy to grow. Also, morning glory, bittergourd, cucumber, long beans. Fruits stick to local papaya, banana etc.
For alcohol, I make my own vodka and whiskey ... about 10 liters per batch at less than 2 USD.
So much knowledge that our parents had, has been lost to ‘education’ influenced by big government and companies.
This has made us slaves to a corrupt system, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Time to get back to basics 🥰
We grow many things but we haven't mastered the art of cycling it, so when our pumpkins come off its another 4 months till the next, same with many veg, its a lot more difficult than people think to provide 100% of your food. cheers

I've seen a guy do $300 a month in Chiang Mai... including still going out for a beer with friends and eating out once and a while...He was single with no kids, so that makes a difference but it was in the city of Chiang Mai, so I was still impressed...My monthly budget when I lived in Chiang Mai was between $500-600 a month...But Maybe I could have gotten buy with a lil over $400...

Why not draw on the walls, you have pictures by other people on the walls… make a wall for kids to do their art, blackboard paint it, whiteboard it or some way you can refresh it from time to time.. all that free art !

Interesting challenge, having found the price difference of all the veg did you do an equation of how much you would of saved in comparison to your usual outlay’s, wouldn’t be surprised if it added up to a fair amount over the year , hard in life to step back from a routine we all fall into, song = Routine Life = El Moth.

Good show, Were bumping along at about $350 a month... That covers everything for both of us. Fortunately, we've got our health, pets are healthy, no rent as we stay with family but we chip in our share as part of the $350. We don't drink, or dine out ever. Got a motorbike that I fill about once a month. starting a small raised bed garden to grow some indica and kratom, would love to get some baby wood rose started in the yard some day...you guys looks good and happy and fit. God blesses you.

So tempted pull the trigger after watching this video and make move to my wife home town of phang khon. We already have a home and our budget would be $850 a month.
i tried livin off 500 a month and it was not fund, i had a daily budget of what i can use on food some days i would not spend half of my budget so i can enjoy a nice weekend out, but living cheeply when you have the means to afford 2x-3x more , i know its an experiment but the wife might not be happy lol

making your own bread is cheaper u could live off 50 a month if u have rice and grow your own vegies and buy expired meat at the market in bulk lol, but the wife might be pissed off lol

It's true that for many things, prices are so much cheaper in Thailand than in Europe, still, 6000 bahts, even being very cautious when I was in Bangkok, I would spend them in 2 or 3 days 😁

The budget is going to be more difficult to keep, prices of food has risen 15% the last month and the bath gone up 10%. If we farangs notice it it will be hard on the local people.
I can taste those fruits ...the fruits I had in Malaysia was the best..they tasted like fruit should...ripe...

We live in bangsan and we tried for one week to see how we could live on we managed 1200 baht for the both of us just for food and water so it’s possible depending on your lifestyle

This video didn't really show it and I'd love to see how you manage... I'm currently living in NE Thailand with my girlfriend, I've been here 4 months and I am really struggling with the food. It's easy in Bangkok & Chiang Mai as there are lots of western options, but here the food options are really limited. Maybe it's time I try more vegetarian? But please, do a day in the life food video... I'd love to see that.

Did you mention Visa and Medicial insurace requirement. Thailand does not make it easy to live here because of these factors.Be honest about that. I have lived here since 2008! Been here before that during Vietnam war. Thanks.

Are there any property taxes in Thailand? In Canada they are high, I pay around $5000 CAD or 125000 baht per year.
Not in Thailand - Also in the uK there is council tax that is very high, here the bins and streets are taken care of for just $2 a month.
dear Ryan:Do you plant your own papaya and many easily grown veggies?I don't suppose that 200 bucks will be enough for three people per month.500 bucks should be the proper amount at least.Btw,lemme remind you about growing more plants around the house,be careful the mosquitoes do like to hide and reside in some sorts of plants and come out to bite people.
