I don’t think you can go wrong with either… I have both setup as stereo pairs in the same room - higher volume listening play 5s really stretch their legs and are less strained. Mid level listening I use the ERA 300s - the bass on the ERA 300s is the real surprise - though not as deep as the 5’s it sounds so clean and punchy. With a well mixed spatial audio track like Buffalo Soldier I’ve never heard anything as immersive - even amazing stereo tracks sound flat in comparison. If you’ve had a windfall - 2xFives and 1xEra300 isn’t a bad option, adding the second era 300 didn’t really improve the spatial audio experience a great deal, only helped with stereo.
Another really useful video - thanks. As an old two-channel fan, with a decent turntable ready for refurb, I'm edging towards a pair of Fives. Suspect an Era 500 may be on the distant horizon, so I'll probably have a little sad moment once that's released. Not looking for death metal volume but that bottom-end on the Fives v the slightly overly-bright edge of the Era 300 clinches it for me. Cheers.

If the Era 300 fills a room with sound by bouncing of the walls, the ceiling, windows etc. How will window curtains affect the effectiveness of this technique, as the fabric absorbs, rather than bounces sound?
I went with the Fives as rears for my Arc and dual subs. The Fives sit around 9-12 feet back on either side of my sofa in our rectangular great room (family room, B-fast nook, kitchen, 20 feet X 42 feet X 10 foot ceilings). The Fives are on stands along the wall on either side of the B-fast nook table pointed towards the family room. I have an extra wide opening to one side into our foyer, dining room, and formal living room. I went for the Fives because I figured they would be a laser beam of sound going directly into our primary listening spot on the sofa. I have a lot of open space, high ceilings, furniture, curtains, and area rugs to factor in with the ERA 300 that may or may not affect the final sound after Trueplay. I haven't listened to the Era 300; but, I really don't feel I'm missing out at all going with the Fives with TV, movies, or music as rear surrounds.
i totally love the sound clarity and signature of five (mine for evening listenings on -1 bass +3 trebble. It doesnt matter where your are in the room, everywhere sounds great - something what nearfields monitors wont provide. But i`m still looking for other option with 0ms latency on Aux in for music monitoring, 70ms is really problem. And i`m pretty sure that cheaper Denon and worry that Marschall wont have this sound i felt in love. For Sonos arent musicians or DJs customers - so they wont implement that No wireless sharing/Auxin 0ms Pro mode/settings option.
I went with the Arc, dual gen 3 subs, and Fives as rears. I ordered everything after X-mas before I knew the release dates of the Era 100/300. My current system sounds Fantastic compared to my Nakamichi 7.2.4 it replaced. The Era 300 is the better speaker for spatial audio and Atmos movies. As of now, only about +/- 30% of the streaming and 0% of streaming audio I listen to is in Atmos format (TV cable only in Dolby 5.1). Hopefully, Atmos won't go away like curved or 3D screens if content providers don't provide enough selections with the format.
I've had a bunch of the old play ones for a long time and got the sub 3 about a year ago. Just got the arc ultra and 2 300s to go with the sub and it was the best choice i have ever made.
I don’t think he meant “software updates so the speaker can improve over time”, but rather “software updates that may or may not break everything” like when trueplay didn’t work on the right channel/speaker in stereo pair

For the price point the ERA 300 should have had deeper bass. At a certain volume level it starts to sound like the bass is too much for the cabinet it’s in. The FIVE is a great speaker

Did you end up going with this stet up? Considering something similar. Also purchased another single Era 300 for my dining room but thinking of replacing that with a Five for a richer sound. A little nervous about committing to the Fives as all of this is net new purchases for me. I like the Bluetooth option the the WiFi 6.

Have Arc ultra, Sub 4, 300's and the Sony Quad with smaller sub. Both systems are excellent and have many strengths. Sonos has an Apple feel and if Apple made a Sound bar it would be much like this and I love that their is NO remote. every device does not need a remote, am sure we all have many remotes we dont use. IMO, the Sony quad sounds better, perhaps different is a better word, it sounds more like a dedicated system, if thats important to you. The Sonos is so darn easy and fun to use, and if you want to add more speaker zones (which I have tried) is very easy, so easy your wife can figure it out. You cant go wrong with either system, if you have other Sonos gear and your into apple ecostyem the Sonos is a better companion.

Im looking to purchase a pair of Five's or 300s for music and I'm torn. I have a small apartment so I wonder would a pair of Five's be too much? Also, surely the Five's are getting an update in the next year and I would hate to buy them now and that happens. Did you go with the Fives or Era 300? The Era 300 (single or pairs) sound like the better choice if you want the speaker for music mostly (stereo or Atmos). You get the future proofing with the ERA 300 with the option to add them to ARC/Beam down the road for Atmos capabilities or move into another room for whole house audio. I'm thinking the Fives might not be supported X amount of time down the road if Sonos comes out with ERA 500 in a few years.

This is the first I have heard that the Era 300s cannot connect to Sonos mesh. That is potentially a major issue for me. Do we know if the 300s can co-exist on a system where other elements of the system connect with mesh, or would one have to transition the entire system to Wi-Fi?
i have sonos arc and sub + 2 era 300 but the price for me is whats killer. i mean after looking up some some stuff i should have gone with a av receive for a 5.1.2 i would have saved money and get way better sound. i get the whole wireless thing but sound wise a av receiver with 5.1.2 will be un matched
Exactly. So I have a traditional AV Receiver with 7.2 in the family room for movies (and killer music), and extend music to other rooms using the Port and Fives.
I have the Arc, Sub Gen3 and 2 Era 300s for HT but we don't watch much TV to tell you the truth and I feel the Arc lacks for music playback. I have a big open plan house and I've tested the pair of 300s with the Sub but I think it's just overkill on the bass so I'm considring another 2 Era300s instead. Do you know if two sets of stereo paired Era300s would work well together when grouped? I mean 4 Era 300s in total... and are the two stereo setups respected and is Atmos content played? Thanks
I have the arc,sub gen3,2 era 300s and 2 play 5s ,so it's a perfect balance if you are wanting the best of both worlds,I have the play 5s paired to my arc and sub and I have the era 300s in a stereo pair and I can tell you it's mind blowing and extremely loud,but I also get atmos when I'm watching a movie and it's great
No you can't add the era 300s to the other set to my knowledge,I just add them in when I want the complete surround sound experience, it works for me because I never want all of them playing constantly, but that's different for everyone
@@kreshawnjackson5382 you can "group" as many pairs as you want. The question for me is if they play Atmos across the group or not. It's difficult to clear up as not many people have 4 Era 300s 😂
@ChrisTonge when I'm playing apple music( off of the apple tv) I'm getting atmos out of my arc and era 300s,but I have no clue if I was getting atmos out of the 300s when I'm playing an atmos movie,I know its coming from the arc but I can't tell if it's coming from the 300s because of how high I have mine mounted,I apologize I can't answer this but haven't seen an explanation from sonos that is satisfactory so far

@@nunolopes1112 Yeah I've been using them in a stereo pair with the Sub Gen 3 and it's a bit over powering to tell you the truth. I personally think they sound better alone but from what I've read on other blogs they are best paired with the Mini for music. So now I'm tied between trying that set up or even 4 Era 300s...
sadly, if you looking for stereo speaker for turntable, sonos is wrong choice, you can plug to line in input and play music on both speakers but sound is only mono... shame!
I tried the Era 300 and found some serious flaws. The Era 300 does not support Sonos Net and one of my Era speakers constantly dropped audio, making them nearly unusable as a stereo pair. Several calls to support proved fruitless and I ended up returning the pair. The Era 300 are also wasted as rear surrounds and do not offer a significant enough upgrade with surround audio to justify choosing them over Sonos Ones or even the Era 100.
DO NOT BUY- Good sound quality but difficult set up and connectivity issues. Wort thing is that after a couple of months the speakers will not connect to the app and you have to use the app to listen to any music. Just trashed over $1k in speakers and customer service did not respond for months after the 5 speakers I had bought had been in the landfill. Buy anything else that connects directly with Bluetooth.
I disagree. I use Focal monitors and high end headphones and the Sonos Five sounds amazing to me that I bought one a couple of months ago, looking to add one more.
Sonos Five for me. I prefer that deeper, richer sound for my music. Had one for a while now and I love it. Great video BTW.

In Stereo Pair, you should put the Fives with the logo outwards for better listening (Sonos recommended).

It will affect it but probably not by that much. Depends on how sensitive your ears are.

For music the ERA300 are a joke, Fives sound so much better. As rear speakers in the TV setup the ERAs are great

Horrible. They have different sound signature, different frequencies. Don t make mistake to make a stereo by 2 diffferent model. The same model only.

you need a usb c to audio jack adapter, then you can just use a 3.5 mm jack from your era to your projector.

pair of 300 is not as punchy as pair five. so I add a sub gen3. problem solved

sadly, if you looking for stereo speaker for turntable, sonos is wrong choice, you can plug to line in input and play music on both speakers but sound is only mono... shame!
Klipsh is good for connecting turntables

I tried the Era 300 and found some serious flaws. The Era 300 does not support Sonos Net and one of my Era speakers constantly dropped audio, making them nearly unusable as a stereo pair. Several calls to support proved fruitless and I ended up returning the pair. The Era 300 are also wasted as rear surrounds and do not offer a significant enough upgrade with surround audio to justify choosing them over Sonos Ones or even the Era 100.

Sound apart, the Five's styling is looking really dated.

DO NOT BUY- Good sound quality but difficult set up and connectivity issues. Wort thing is that after a couple of months the speakers will not connect to the app and you have to use the app to listen to any music. Just trashed over $1k in speakers and customer service did not respond for months after the 5 speakers I had bought had been in the landfill. Buy anything else that connects directly with Bluetooth.

I just purchased two era300 and one connected quickly the other will not connect at all and I’ve tied to factory reset still nothing

I disagree. I use Focal monitors and high end headphones and the Sonos Five sounds amazing to me that I bought one a couple of months ago, looking to add one more.
