The Torah of Kindness & Truth - A Shavuot Shiur | Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

  • Coming up to Shavuot, I would like to look at one tiny detail of the Rabbinical understanding of Z'man Matan Torahteinu, the actual event of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. One little detail which, as it were, was lying there in the tradition and only in much more recent times has it had significant impact. So I think this is an interesting dimension of the understanding of the event, and also one that explains something very important that's happened to Judaism in the past century. #Shavuot #Torah #Judaism #Kindness #Truth #Emet #Chesed #Men #women

Baruch HaShem, in every generation we have sages who brilliantly explain the loving kindness and the truth of the Torah (and the entire Tanakh).
May you continue to be blessed, Rav Lord Sacks, with so much wisdom and eloquence. You inspire the nations to grab the "knaf ish Yehudi" and learn about the G-d of Israel.
I once heard you speaking during Rosh Hashanah at the Marble Arch shul in London, and I got mesmerized with the content of your speech. In that same service I was called to open the Arc, and that's when everything transformed inside me as far as learning Torah more avidly.
The Jewish people worldwide thank you for such a brilliant work you do. I believe that many, if not all, share the opinion that you truly work to be a light to the nations, spreading the best about the People Israel around the world.
My deepest respect and gratitude for your shiurim that you make available online.
    Best regards. Shalom!

Thank you, Lord Rabbi Sacks, first, for your leadership in taking on topics of controversy - in our sometimes crazy world of ours - with humanity and respect for the
" other " (point of view)..secondly, I very much enjoyed your Torah sermon. ...this Torah sermon is another example of your empathy, and sensitivity - not to mention your Torah scholarship - in taking on a topic that " others " would strongly disagree with, i.e. should woman be learning Torah/Talmud, in view of past Jewish cultural/Halachic norms and values.
May you be blessed with continued health, and strength...wishing you and your loved ones, a Joyous and Meaningful Shavuot/Pentecost Holiday.

Many thanks to you Rabbi Sacks for giving an wonderful explanation about the Torah . The reasons for giving it to woman first . The Bible also states about the loving kindness first and the truth next. Clearly indicating the priorities about woman and man. The third reason given for this is due to Adams failure to keep the one and only commandment is very much understandable.

Normally men and chesed/giving are associated with the right side of the kabbalistic tree of life whereas women and taking/gvurah/emet are on the left side.
But in this shiur things seem to be mixed: women=chesed, men=emet. Anyone has an idea why?

The Reform movement specifically believes in discouraging mitzvot. It's literally why the movement was created - so people could claim Judaism without having to believe in a God or in keeping Torah. They don't even do circumcision or mikvah when they "convert" people.

Thks Rav Sacks but unfortunately till up today there are reluctant orth rabbis contrary that women learn Torah Gemara and Mishna. I am not a femminist as I am an observant orth. Jewish woman. Women can see more far than men and we had a good example from our matriachal mothers like Sarah rivka leah and rachelWe were in the past too much discriminated but we are the helpmate of the man as reported in Bereshit. May HaShem bless you rav Sacks for your amazing work.

Thank you all for responding to my comment. Without going through the ugly details. There it is. The level of modesty in BY is as low as it can get within the context of Yidishkit. BY is now family businesses, ran by few for their people to be employed and being paid big salaries. You have a job as long as there is no one from the family who needs a job. Once there is one you are OUT. For those parents who want to take their kids out, there is almost no other option. Some have been taken in by the Chassidosher schools. But very very few with conditions.

Could this be the root of the matter?
A woman carries a child for 9 months. She has a head start in hearing and obeying WITH the child, building the Torah in the child's heart and awakening it in the DNA.
    "Planting the seed".
We all matter. Especially the women. After all, Y'israel is the bride.
