Check to see if all 4 glowplugs are actually operating by taking the connecting rail off and testing each one. The misfire on startup is normally caused by one or more g/plugs being dead and the lazy starti g could be due to that too but remember 1KZ's have a Quick glow system, the dash light only stays on for a few seconds, hit the key the second it goes out. The starti g and misfire could also be the front seal in the injector pump. Take out the return bolt from the top of the pump using a 17mm socket or ring spanner and wipe on a clean white rag. If rag gets a black smear on it then the front seal in the injector pump has gone hard and the injector pump is actually sucking engine oil back into itself and allowing air in as well. See this problem daily. Easy fix and a cheap fix as well.

Funny you say 80 because I took an FZJ80 for a trip through Southern NSW, got back 10 mins ago 🤣 Very interesting comparison between the two cars, Surfs feel much more like a car on the road but has much less space, is less comfy, and slower. LC80 is absolute fantastic but if steering and suspension is not maintained then they drive like 💩. Both cars are fantastic though, 80 series and Surf have a special spot in my heart ❤️
