if you think about it just for a min you'll quickly realize John Oliver is an absolute beast of a not only comedian, journalist but a talk-show host as well .. :) Him and the whole crew really are doing the heavy lifting which makes this show simply.. LE-GEN-DA-RY for 9 straight years ! Think how much less you would know about real problems going on in your own country without them it's really mind-blowing .. Just so much respect i cannot put into words.

The producer would have spoken to him, and they may have checked if he was familiar with the show, and it’s possible they would prepare interview subjects for what’s going to happen, but the fact is that the ability to fake a reaction to something absurd that you knew was coming is _seriously difficult_ if you aren’t a professional actor (and even then), so to ensure candid responses and reactions come off as sincere, it is rare for interview subjects to be given any specific information at all about what will be discussed. Subject sometimes demand such information, and I can only speak for myself and producers I have known or worked with, but the answer to that demand is a resounding “NO”. To the extent that the interview is more likely than not cancelled if they push for pre-screening content or questions. The preparation is primarily about having backup plans and alternates to ensure there will be something useful for the show even if something doesn’t work out, rather than attempting to shape a particular interaction. Anyone who’s watched bad reality TV shows has seen what happens when you try to artificially shape something like an interview. It’s painfully obvious.
9 years later, it’s absolutely shocking how John and his crew managed to not only interview Edward Snowden, but make it in and out of Russia with all his limbs still attached.
It was also easier ten years ago. They were still keeping an eagle eye on this kind of thing, but they were only acting on things they didn't like from Russian citizens. Now? Anyone's guess as to whether Oliver would be able to get a visa. There was actually a time when Russia appeared to be on track to be a world partner, not an antagonist. It really could have been different.
I will say this: when I first watched this, I thought John was making fun of the situation. Then I rewatched it a few days later and it clicked for me: he's making it digestible for the average American in a way that flew over my head the first time. Now, if only everyone in America can watch this interview...

Im blown away in how much Im learning and understanding while rewatching these old episodes. Even years later, its all still so relevant because we see how little has changed or now from a deeper and broader perspective after living through it. Everyone in power basically ended up acknowledging just how wrong the mass data gathering was, tacitly agreed he was right with their actions, but also unequivocally refuse to say he was right and insist he must be punished for it. Talking out of both sides of their mouths as politicians and alphabet agencies tend to. Snowden was given Russian citizenship in 2022. He's not getting away from them even if he wants to. Safe bet he ends up in a gulag at some point once Putin is done with him, and American politicians will celebrate when that situation resolves itself in the usual Russian way.

This was the high water mark for this series. Not saying it's been bad since. It's simply rare for even the best series television to rise to the level of this episode. John Oliver, for all his quirks and infuriating guilt complexes, for a few moments at least, transcended them all and was simply briliant.

i forgot how much i love-hated the Snowden interview such a clever way of *finally* just putting it in such a crude and plain way that no Citizen could ignore the obvious message. Yes, it's jarring and a bit cringy by design but i'll have to add points for that i guess~ I get why he keeps saying he's not a journalist, but he sure does have a knack for effective communications ^^
I'm always amazed since this story came out how people are still worried about being tracked and being monitored, yet have no problem putting all their personal info on their devices and online. Then they complain when their identity gets stolen. There is no such thing as a completely secure connection when everything we do is made public.
@@PretendingToBeAHuman It is still possible to live without the internet or putting information online for the world to see. Most personal information we put online is voluntary. I don't use social media or purchase anything online and on the rare occasion that I register with any website, I use fake information. Even if I used my real information, I don't worry too much because I have nothing worth being stolen. I understand that some services might require personal information, but you can often get away with using fake information for online services, even if it's for something that requires real information. It really just depends on what it is and what your information is needed for.
It's not all about personal info either. Obviously this episode puts it in the terms of nudes to make people understand the concepts, but this applies to basically every kind of organising as well. If the government, or the NSA handlers, deem one organisation to be a threat to security, they can use the information gathered about the people in those groups to in effect stop or arrest protest actions. The possibilities are basically endless. It has never been easier for an authoritarian to, if they get elected, completely shut down any kind of dissent using the information that the NSA collects. The US government can effectively preempt every kind of protest and/or dissenting action before they happen, if they would want to. Not to mention the illegal civil actions that might spring up as a result of government actions, like strategic sabotage, which goes into the grey zone of civil dissent. That's what Snowden means about the gun to your head. Not to mention everything outside of the US, of course. Who knows how information is handled with US allies, like Saudi Arabia or Turkey. Not saying that the US is currently sharing information about dissenters in those nations, but they easily could. That's also a huge concern to world peace, the establishment of democracy in the world and the diplomatic world order overall.

There are plenty of reasons to take nude pictures, even if some will be more dumb than others. But mostly, I just think that people shrug and think that it isn't going to happen to them. Are you referring to the files that Snowden disclosed, or files that the NSA has on specific people? The Snowden files are easily accessible. You just have to know where to look. He was interviewed recently on either Stephen Colbert or Seth Myers (I watch both, can't remember which it was...) and said that he now has the rights to the episodes and is putting them up one season at a time essentially as an archive. It's also so everyone can get a chance to see them if they hadn't. They will put up one season each week there isn't a new show, so this is what we get when John has a little vacay. Can't complain!!
I know it is silly and fun as well, but him breaking things down in this way is genuinely very helpful. I never understood what people were talking about with this stuff. I have a TBI and have limits when it comes to language and processing. Part of that means large amounts of information, especially in written form, simply don't absorb. I don't end up actually understanding anything. But even though it is with much less nuance, its still enough to provide some good perspective and let people understand it

Now that we've gotten season two's full uploads (and hopefully will get this for the other past seasons at some point, I honestly was surprised they dropped more than season one so I wouldn't put season 3 past them in a few months), I'm hoping the last episode of this currently-airing season will acknowledge the full episode reuploads and cover how much things changed & stayed the same, or at the very least he'll do a web-exclusive about it when they have more of their library up
He stated in a recent interview that they will be putting up a season each time they have a 'bye' week. He didn't have a new episode this week, so they uploaded season two. In other words, we will eventually get all of it 😁😁
@@victoriaeads6126 I think they were saying it would be cool if John added a 3-5 min update on the situation that was discussed in the video years ago (ie where is Government Surveillance now, how are Farming issues now, how is the issue of Civil Forfeiture etc)

While he was under 24 hour surveillance the fathers own daughter
accused him of sexual assault. The FBI had video evidence that the
assault never took place. The FBI didn't release the footage until he was convicted.

The Snowden files are easily accessible. You just have to know where to look. Google won't help you.
As far as with the NSA has on any individual, you would need to get a job with the NSA to do that.

He was interviewed recently on either Stephen Colbert or Seth Myers (I watch both, can't remember which it was...) and said that he now has the rights to the episodes and is putting them up one season at a time essentially as an archive. It's also so everyone can get a chance to see them if they hadn't. They will put up one season each week there isn't a new show, so this is what we get when John has a little vacay. Can't complain!!

I know it is silly and fun as well, but him breaking things down in this way is genuinely very helpful. I never understood what people were talking about with this stuff. I have a TBI and have limits when it comes to language and processing. Part of that means large amounts of information, especially in written form, simply don't absorb. I don't end up actually understanding anything. But even though it is with much less nuance, its still enough to provide some good perspective and let people understand it

Digital storage mediums are lucky to survive even 20 years in ideal conditions, let alone long enough in poor enough conditions to be considered archaeology.

@@JackPitmanNica I mean, unless we engrave it on a steel plate or seal a paper transcript inside an air-tight anhydrous container, no broadcast is surviving for longer than a human lifetime without needing to be re-recorded, which slows down degradation rather than outright preventing it. Remember how like a decade or two ago, all of the old Disney movies had to be "digitally remastered" and "restored" to their original quality? That's because the original film reals used as the master copies had been degraded by time. And that's the largest media company in the world. Entire episodes of the original Doctor Who no longer exist.
The only reason we even have a lot of the smaller things is because of archivists working diligently to keep records of stuff, and even then, there's still so much lost media out there that we'll never be able to get back. 1960s news reports in rural Kansas. Weddings recorded on VCR that your kids taped over with an episode of Power Rangers. Books whose only printing were destroyed by water damage before they could be shipped out. Video games that sold maybe 100 copies and got forgotten about. Scientific studies burned by Nazis. Entire family histories destroyed.

Long before Snowden's revelation, I knew someone "could be watching". Perhaps that is why I never thought it to be a good idea to mail a picture of my junk, but now that I know for sure, it might be worth a try!!!

(One with a comedy show host) He immediately abandoned all of it and said "I do miss my country." Implying his country is in fact *not* where he is. Instead of "I do miss America." or "I do miss the geological country." Also, no, your country doesn't travel with you, your "home" does. "My country" is either the one you're in, or the one you feel you belong to.
