Nick D loved this games. The title sticker wasn’t even on there so I never really knew the name of the game. Plus there was a language barrier so I just the game out hahaha
This is one of my all time favorite games! Yeah, it's barely playable but the humor in it is just too much fun. I wish there was a lovingly made remake or a sequel. The idea is so good.
I've been playing this game a lot these days, and it reminds me a lot of Blast Corps: the same focus on puzzle solving and on switching vehicles/robots/animals. Even the graphics are pretty similar. They are both among the best and most original N64 games
There's a game with a very similar mechanic called avenging spirit which came out before this one in 1992 on the game boy. You possess enemy characters to progress through the game. As far as I'm aware that's the esrliest game with this mechanic but I could be wrong.
i remember a friend trading me this game i was quick to judge it. I realized after playing and beating it what a great game and how overlooked it could have gone nevertheless, i loved it glad it got reviewed by you too!
extremely similar to my list. I also went with Aero Fighters, Sunset Riders, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Mario All Stars, Joe and Mac 2, and the Tetris/ Dr. Mario combo cart. Excellent taste man
Maybe I was too young at the time, but I could never beat the first boss of Aero Fighters and could never make it past the first area in Silicon Valley. I would try and try and try. Just never could figure out what I was doing wrong.
One thing to note: if you are going to play this on a real N64, then you have to use the original memory jumper pack. For whatever reason it is completely incompatible with the expanded memory pack and won't progress past a certain scene in the opening. I do not know if this is just simply an effect of my everdrive, but I know that it worked when I swapped packs. Otherwise this game is just bonkers.
Flashcarts are not emulators. They load the games image into the system exactly as a cartridge does. There is no emulation involved whatsoever as the system is playing the game that is loaded into it's memory. You could flash the rom onto a rom chip on a regular cartridge and it will work exactly the same as the original. Also, there are roms that were made for certain uses or for certain emulators that do not work on real hardware. However, there are multiple "sets" of roms that are 1:1 images of the games. There is nothing "unstable" about that. The only issues you run into with Everdrives is when you get a game that has a special chip/mapper in it that the Everdrive does not support. like the SuperFX chip and a few others. Flashcarts let you play updated versions of some games (sports games), romhacks of some of your favorite games, completely new games and, by far the best aspect, full translations. In other news I have a non-nintendo expansion pack and this game works just fine with my SD2SNES flashcart.
Yeah, pulling the code off a flash cart would have no effect on how the game actually runs. There are at least a few games that won't run properly with the Expansion Pak installed. Killer Instinct Gold will not even boot.
Alex i can confirm genuine cartrige with my aftermarket expansion pak (another mistake) and the game wont make it past the rocket crash where you kill the dog
@@rars0n are you sure about KI Gold? I could've sworn I already had the Expansion Pak in for Perfect Dark when I hired out KI Gold.. I was running the PAL version, which might have something to do with it.
@@phattjohnson Yeah, I'm positive. KI Gold was one of the first games I bought for the system, and I bought the Expansion Pak as soon as it was released. Mine was an early US system.
Holy smokes. I've not looked much into the N64 era games. I know the major ones and few oddities like Mischief Makers. But damn, looks like there were games that tried to innovate.
I have this game! I love it! The only reason I ever found this game at all is because I bought an eBay lot of N64 games because I wanted a few of the other games in the lot, but once I tried it I was hooked for quite a while. I still have that game about 17 years later. I don't even remember what other games I got in that lot or if I still Jane any of the other ones
Frig I loved this game. I just found out there's a Gameshark code to fix the hit box size of the last trophy so you can collect it (check the TCRF article for the N64 version of the game, the "Bugs" page has the code), now I want to purchase the cart and finally 100% it for old times sake.
The Playstation version was developed by Runecraft and has some levels missing though. The GBC and the PS1 versions were only released in Europe, and this game was also going to be released in Japan as well.
I love this game! I remember renting this game yeaaaars ago at a Hollywood Video cuz I thought the art on the cartridge was cool haha I actually own the game and still play it sometimes. It's a terribly under-rated gem and I'm glad you're bringing it into light for others to see and maybe try out of they like what they see?
Broo it's been so long since it's heard this games menu music. Instant nostalgia. I don't think so ever got passed the first or second level since I was a child playing this, but maaaan do I miss those easy days..
Man, I totally forgot about this game, and absolutely loved it as a kid. I never owned it, never beat it, but rented it a couple times, and really liked how freaking weird it was. It did feel kinda chintzy at times, but it was so quirky and weird that I took a shine to it. Definitely want to check it out again now!
I remember buying this game off the shelf when I was a kid from a local store. It was on clearance so I decided to give it a go. I had no clue wtf was happening, I could dig it. I’m happy to say I still have my copy til’ this day.
I remember renting this game from my public library when I was younger (and they actually rented out game carts.) It was actually pretty fun from what I recall, and it was obvious weird as shit compared to most of the games I had played by then.
The best thing about this era of gaming is how many experimental titles there are. The rules of the different 3D genres hadn’t been fully set yet so developers had to make everything up.
I loved this game as a kid, though I don't think I ever actually beat it. I keep getting the urge to play Silicon Valley every time I boot up Mario Odyssey, with the possession mechanic and whatnot. Also, I think this is the only game I've ever played where elevator music actually seemed to fit its tone without being a constant nuisance.
I wanted this game as a kid, but could never find it. I finally found it years later and bought it and loved playing what I could. The only issue was I got motion sickness while playing the game. Not sure why as this is the only game I ever experienced that.
Hell yeah! I used to love this game! I played it at a cousins house when I was a kid and enjoyed the freedom of exploration but never knew what it was called though, until much much later. We used to just call it Dogman 64 haha cuz we were stuck playing as the dog since my cousin apparently forgot the controls and so I never knew u could even be other animals until I began doing some research on this game recently.
Hey SNES drunk, do you have any recommendations for a good tactical kinda turn based game like SimCity, OgreBattle and such? Really looking for those laid back games where I don't need my reflexes :)
I'm glad you mentioned that bug. That's been one of those things that because I know about it has kept me away from this game. It's a shame I bet if this game got re-released with that problem fixed it would be pretty interesting. As it is I guess I'd get it just for curiosity's sake if I see it sitting in a box at like a yard sale or somewhere cheap like a thrift shop.
Bought this off eBay and playing through it for the first time, and I'm kicking myself for not asking my parents for it back in the day. I remember reading about it in Nintendo Power, and I thought it sounded pretty cool, but I never even rented it for whatever reason. This wouldn't have been much of an issue at all back in the day, but I have noticed a few things about the game that haven't aged well. The camera is usually decent enough, but there are times when it is just terrible. The hit detection of the vines in the jungle stages is less then good. Jumping from one vine to the next works well, but you'll often miss grabbing the initial vine. The controls for the plane level and walrus racing level were really not that good either. Definitely could have used some tweaking. But overall it's still an amazing title, and it really should have had a sequel or five. I'd give it no less then an 8 out of 10.
I feel like ever since this game came out, it's been a hidden classic. I remember hearing quite a bit about it before it came out and then almost nothing once it was released. I feel like the underwhelming (but totally functional) graphics had something to do with that.
I love this cute and quirky game. But I just realised that it has similarities to the film Event Horizon, which is super creepy. I need to get the N64 version, but I do have the Gameboy Colour version, which is pretty cool too.
OMG... Almost forgotten! Thanks for that! Worth mentioning: There is a german electronic music act called "Mouse on Mars". Back in days they used this game for one of their music videos: th-cam.com/video/IAJ4OT6-5GU/w-d-xo.html
So, we are reviewing N64 games now! I guess you would run out of SNES games some day, but I don't recall you reviewing Cold Shadow! a game that doesn't get as much love as it should.
When I was a kid I would scour the internet for release dates of N64 games. When I read the title of this game it sounded like something I wanted to play. Long story short I thought the game was canned because I was never able to find it.
There's a cheat code to unlock the final level that you can't reach because of the glitch pickups not allowing you to get to it, so at least there's that.
I don't feel Glover is obscure. It's quite well know, if not considered 'infamous' for being so...odd. Yet I do find Glover to be a bit underappreciated. It's nothing AMAZING but it's no where near bad like loads of people would like one to believe. It's just different.
There was a bug in this game? I never encountered any. I was able to get everything and see the ending just fine, and I've seen play throughs showing it too.
If you want to try an also weird game that could be considered the spiritual succesor of E.V.O. (SNES) you must play CUBIVORE for the Gamecube. I own it and I´m mad at myself for not giving it the chance it deserved.
Quite a fun game, but I remember it was bugged so either you couldn't beat the game legit, or you couldn't get 100% completion good ending etc legit. One of the last items in the game just can not be picked up, so you have to cheat to get it.
This was my all time favorite N64 game as a kid. Took me forever to beat it.

Most of the story setup is explained in the manual, which handles it with a goofy over-the-top humor that matches the game's look.
It's also got that iconic dry humor that's prevalent in Rockstar's games, though more light-hearted compared to games like GTA.
