Sam Cooke, became the greater star, but Paul Foster has a voice of pure gold...Cooke learned at the feet of two of the greatest singers in gospel, Foster and the great R.H. Harris...:}
I have him singing with another group before he joined the soul stirrers, hope to post it soon. I agree he was a giant and a real gentleman. I met him several times here in Philly. When I interviewed Mr Farley in 1988, he had high praise for Mr Foster
This music speaks to the heart. Love to hear the Soul Stirrers. I happened upon them while looking for Sam Cooke music and fell. I have been raised in pentecostal church and this music is like a balm for the aching soul. Thanks for posting!
some folks pay 20 million to fly to space. i'd pay 20 million to get to come in on top of paul foster's "must jesus bear this cross alone" lead with the "amazing grace" riff sam dropped on him. that version of "must jesus", and "how...canaan" and "my lord done (just what he said)" are my three all time stirrer favorites. "must jesus" and "my lord" are structurally similar.
This man is my favorite! I'm so thrilled that video of him exists. Honestly, his moments on those Soul Stirrers records are my favorite and I wait for them gratefully each time.
Love Paul Foster's voice & delivery, his obvious sincerity & strength. He's SANGIN', here, and sing he could! The recorded arrangement w/Paul and Sam Cooke is seamless interplay perfection, pure soaring joy, but I already loved the Soul Stirrers b4 Sam ever came along. Harmoniously top-notch soul-satisfying gospel music consistently....The Soul Stirrers. Thank you, Gentlemen, for all you gave. It meant far more, to so many of us, than you could ever guess. Thanks, gospellin, for this posting.
Paul had it...he grasped the anointing and ran with it..as any anointed artist there comes a price for the anointing and I believe Paul had some trials to acquire such an anointing then of course he later became a preacher so that calling was there u can hear it.
This is a fundamental black group of the 1950 black music scene. Statesmen Quartet and others used many of these influences. A very young Sam Cooke came out of this group singing with the powerful Paul Foster.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Sam sang without the anointing. Sam sang gospel like nobody had or has. If you want to hear Sam singing under the anointing, just listen to him sing The Long Live version of Nearer My God To Thee....Just wrecked the place.
Must Jesus bear the cross alone, and all the world go free? No, there's a cross for everyone, and there's a cross for me He bore the cross for everyone down the road to Calvary Now there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross for me, and there's a cross for me The consecrated cross I'll bear till death shall set me free And then go home my crown to wear, for there's a crown for me He wore the crown for everyone, alone on Calvary Now there's a crown for everyone and there's a crown for me, and there's a crown for me He bore the cross for everyone down the road to Calvary Now there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross for me, and there's a cross for me Source: LyricFind
@bouncedrealitycheck Thank you for this comment!! I've wondered that very same thing over the years. U spoke it for so many of us. I know I owe a debt of never-dieing gratitude to Black gospel singers. I, too, love the version of "Must Jesus....." U refer to. Paul Foster is as jaygatsby1 comment states so well. Bet Sam Cooke learned much, working w/Paul & the S/S. Wonderful, wonderful group. (U might enjoy my "Sunday Morning at Bro. Woods House" playlist w/notes, tho' incomplete OF COURSE! (: )
Groups, with various leads stands out. Like the Temps, the Drifters many lead vocalist doesn't get credit. Until you notice the other great singers through research.
yes.......paul and sam do an incredible version of this song. paul is the rock.....the foundation......and sam comes in on top riffing "amazing grace". sam uses about nine syllables to get "amazing" out........it's striking......who would ever think of phrasing like that? and paul brings it as always....... one of my favorite stirrers recordings of all time.
I mean Sam Cooke could truly sing..but I think Paul had the fire that Sam really never acquired of course we know he went secular..u can't compromise the anointing..u gotta stay in God to keep the fire Paul had
@Oldmanriver77---- used to think the same until I heard live recordings of Sam's gospel. Wasn't nobody today or yesterday touching Sam. Crooning or Screaming.
This man did not get his credit every black soul singer tried there best to imitate his style from sam cooke David ruffin otis Redding but here is the truth just listen to him on Nearer to thee, if the soul stirres would of switched over they would change music not even the mighty temptations could of took the heat.

Wow this man can sing...Like the roaring waters! The Soulstirrers version with Sam & Paul is amazing also.
Paul had it...he grasped the anointing and ran with it..as any anointed artist there comes a price for the anointing and I believe Paul had some trials to acquire such an anointing then of course he later became a preacher so that calling was there u can hear it.

LORD,HAVE MERCY!!!!!!NOTHING BUT PURE ANOINTING!!!!!!!!!!
you all are missing something..paul is singing with that something that Jesus gave him..the comforter.
Mr. Foster definitely made a dent against Satan's agenda with his God driven raw talent.
WOW. Fantastic - thanks for posting this beautiful vid! Well I was lost but now I'm found, was blind but now I see...testify brother.

Paul Foster 💓💕💓
Loved Paul!!!
Paul Foster passed away on August 20 1995. For more info on him, checkout his

Gospllin When I sang gospel I tried to sing with the voice of Cooke...but the delivery and anointing of Paul...

No, there's a cross for everyone, and there's a cross for me
He bore the cross for everyone down the road to Calvary
Now there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross for me, and there's a cross for me
The consecrated cross I'll bear till death shall set me free
And then go home my crown to wear, for there's a crown for me
He wore the crown for everyone, alone on Calvary
Now there's a crown for everyone and there's a crown for me, and there's a crown for me
He bore the cross for everyone down the road to Calvary
Now there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross for me, and there's a cross for me

@gospellin Are you going to post it? I would love to see it,
JUSTIN BEIBER CANT TOUCH THIS.
Groups, with various leads stands out. Like the Temps, the Drifters many lead vocalist doesn't get credit. Until you notice the other great singers through research.
@vivascargill Yes if they have the recording
yes.......paul and sam do an incredible version of this song. paul is the rock.....the foundation......and sam comes in on top riffing "amazing grace". sam uses about nine syllables to get "amazing" out........it's striking......who would ever think of phrasing like that? and paul brings it as always....... one of my favorite stirrers recordings of all time.
@veeseee128 I don't believe this would be considered a negro spiritual. Someone actually wrote this. It's in the hymn book.
who is the man who intro?
I will upload sam cooke's version today if you want.
I mean Sam Cooke could truly sing..but I think Paul had the fire that Sam really never acquired of course we know he went secular..u can't compromise the anointing..u gotta stay in God to keep the fire Paul had
Alan Hudson
Well that's clearly nonsense.
yaw gonna leave paul foster alone hes smooth yet he can go off on a song
Don't sleep on Paul Foster - he may not have the range or charisma as Sam, but make no mistake: he's on the same level.
Id rather listen to him then sam. He was a better gospel singer in my opinion
I agree, Paul definitely had a better gospel sound. Sam was more a crooner - not as much gospel feel.
@Oldmanriver77---- used to think the same until I heard live recordings of Sam's gospel. Wasn't nobody today or yesterday touching Sam. Crooning or Screaming.
Both amazing in their talents xx
This man did not get his credit every black soul singer tried there best to imitate his style from sam cooke David ruffin otis Redding but here is the truth just listen to him on Nearer to thee, if the soul stirres would of switched over they would change music not even the mighty temptations could of took the heat.
paul foster is great than rebert
YES SA!!!
