    Good review. I've been running PCLOS on my home PC hardware for years. Many similar focused distributions have come and gone, but this one has stayed relevant and improved greatly. As you said for new users switching from MS Win, it's one of the best and the community really makes you feel welcome (forum, magazine, etc.)
    If you want to really "dig into" Linux, you can go as far as you want with PCLOS, but many users (including myself) greatly appreciate the ease of install, update, and daily use it provides, without all the "drama" of some other "popular" distros.

    I remember using PCLinuxOS back in the day when it was based on Mandrake.. so surprising its still around and nice they went their own way after Mandrake/Mandriva shutdown

    PCLinuxOS. There's a blast from my past. I don't think I've given this little distro a try since around 2007. Thanks for covering it. I may have to spin up a VM over the weekend.

    Fist time watcher here, if you like stand alone distros check out Solus. It's one of the first distros I ran whenever i switched to Linux 3 or so year's ago.

    11:47 KDE Neon using 100 mb less. ;) KDE is very lightweight imo, due to it's features and look.
    But Xfce version of PCLOS is most lightweight Xfce-based distro I've seen.

    If you want to look at something that looks like Windows XP, try the Trinity desktop. Q4 is the distro that uses it.

      I have a Q4OS install on an old laptop that uses an XP theme. PCLinuxOS is my everyday OS on my two main computers, though.

    i,ll never understand why anyone would even consider a windows os theme for a linux distro de.but to each his own,it is after all linux,and thats whats so great,with linux we can pretty much build whatever system we want to design,but windows xp?really?pclinux really blew my mind with how sleek and yet full because of the synaptics arsenal,.thanks for a great video,(sans mention of windows xp).take care.did i mention my dislike of anything microsoft yet?

    I wonder if PCLinuxOS rolls fast like Arch or OpenSuse. On that note, I wonder the same about OpenMandriva.

      Good question...I may need to do a long term review to experience that myself

    • @presentarmsonlinux
      @presentarmsonlinux 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes it's fast on major packages, so things like kernels (Major releases are tested first then point releases normally day after kernel org has released them) GCC, browsers, libreoffice P(uses it's own installer made by a pclos dev also virtualbox),Plasma etc. We get on top of things for the majority

      I've been using PCLOS almost exclusively since around 2007. I mostly use machines that are 5-7 years old and it's plenty fast for what I do. I'm not a hard core computer user so YMMV. I rarely have any problems with it but, if I do, the forum has plenty of knowledgeable people that are willing to help.

    Just found the channel, going to check out another video....
    I have a request, would you mind checking out Gento Linux?? It is also rolling release, it is also based on its own but it uses an xBSD package manager, if memory serves. Back in the day it was listed as the fastest Linux because it would compile Linux while you installed it. After that it would compile it to optimize to your hardware....
    Thank you for your time;
    Monte

      Funny to see this comment. I've "played with" Gentoo recently, running the install in a VM (on PCLOS).
      It's "night and day" different from what PCLOS is providing. Very "bare metal". But, it's a learning experience, too. Not something I would recommend for a newbie, but interesting for sure.

  • @VinnyUnion

    Isn't it kind of similar like "Void Linux' which is quite unique and independant on its own.

    • @johncate9541
      @johncate9541 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are independent, but there are some differences. Interestingly, both reject systemd, but while Void uses runit, PCLOS still uses old-school SysVinit. Void also supports 32-bit x86 and ARM, while PCLOS is x86-64 only since 2017.
