- Victoria Raschke (author, host of Witchlit Pod) and Nay Noordsmans (House of Gnomi) join the Circle to discuss Gnomes by Wil Huygen & Rien Poortvliet. An anthropological textbook into the history and culture of Gnomes, this curious book initiated the current popularity of the little men with red hats, and the thoughtful art, and ecological and animistic perspective feel at home in our sacred texts of Witchcraft.

Brilliant podcast. Interesting you mentioned Scandinavia and the tomte. One of my favourite books of all time is "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" (Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige, literally Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden). Nils, a mischievous boy, is reduced to thumb size by a tomte, gains the ability to talk to animals and lives great adventures.
They say it's children's literature, but I beg to differ. Author Selma Lagerlöf was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature for it, it's a book for all ages, full of charm and natural magic and timeless wisdom.
Allow me to provide an example (I quote from memory, ok ?).
Nils rides the skies of Sweden on a goose. One day the flock is having some rest on a beach.
Nils walks on the beach, bored and worried he'll be a tomte too for the rest of his life, he misses home. He picks up an old, rusty penny, throws it away ; kicks pebbles and conchs.
And then he hears a mighty roar coming from the sea ! A huge structure, a city rises from the waves ! His curiosity is insatiable, he decides to visit the sea city.
The city is rich and magnificent, there's people everywhere selling their goods, all offering Nils the opportunity to purchase the finest merchs in the world. And he replies "Sorry, don't have any money...sorry..."
He admires the streets and boulevards filled with commerce and traders, all asking him "Would the fine young gentleman buy my precious articles ?" And to all his embarrassed reply was
"Terrribly sorry, I have no cash on me..."
The hours fly. And one of the city dwellers comes to Nils, tears in his eyes, and tells him : "Time to go. You must leave."
"Why ?" Nils asks him. "This place is absolutely fantastic !"
To which the replies,
"Fantastic, beautiful...but doomed. Please leave now."
"But WHY?" repeats Nils
"Because" the man says "our city was cursed. We grew rich and richer, we only cared for gold and silver, we forgot all the other beautiful and meaningful things in life."
"But" the man goes on, "we get a chance. Every hundred years the city rises from the bottom of the ocean and if perchance someone who is on this lonely beach comes visit us and buys something, no matter what, the curse will be lifted."
And it dawned on Nils. The rusty penny he had found and thrown away.
"I can do it ! I can save you ! I know where I can find a penny, I'll purchase something and lift the curse !"
"Too late" the man said again. "Go. Now"
And Nils leaves the city with a heavy heart, returns to shore, and cries as he sees the cursed city sink into the ocean for the next hundred years.
He cries bitter tears.
That useless, old rusty penny.
And he swears never judge things by size and looks again.
He understands nobody knows it all, nobody really knows others and their problems, that, in life, we don't hold all the cards.
Gnomes!
