I think I've also heard a version where she is heavily pregnant and rescuing Tam was him being born as her child, who she wraps in her kirtle like a swaddle, which brings in reincarnation and the idea that the fairies are ancestors, and how a death here is a birth in Faerie and vice versa.

In one version I read, Carterhaugh is actually HER land, promised to her by her father, so she has a motive to check on it. I first heard this ballad (in this lifetime) on Fairport Convention's album, & didn't think much about it until ten or twenty years ago, when I started waking up every October 10 with Tam Lin, "The Bonnie Bunch of Roses Oh," & a varying third tune stuck in my head until Halloween. Every year. I did a Deep Dive. I downloaded Childe & more. It was my FOURTH venture into folk, trad, whatever you call it, the first when I was about nine, the second in the Folk Revival of the Sixties, the third in the late Eighties when I discovered Irish music, and then when Tam Lin started playing on October tenths. I'm currently trying to write a ballad combining John Riley & House Carpenter. We should talk. In the video below I'm the one with all the Face, & in the following one I'm the actual witch. th-cam.com/video/-rrjRw3-9Ok/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SLLpn3IIwQtXLNas th-cam.com/video/dMPoiDq1eyE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MS1F_xYxM4LnkQn3 (Missouri)

Brilliant podcast. Interesting you mentioned Scandinavia and the tomte. One of my favourite books of all time is "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" (Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige, literally Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden). Nils, a mischievous boy, is reduced to thumb size by a tomte, gains the ability to talk to animals and lives great adventures. They say it's children's literature, but I beg to differ. Author Selma Lagerlöf was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature for it, it's a book for all ages, full of charm and natural magic and timeless wisdom. Allow me to provide an example (I quote from memory, ok ?). Nils rides the skies of Sweden on a goose. One day the flock is having some rest on a beach. Nils walks on the beach, bored and worried he'll be a tomte too for the rest of his life, he misses home. He picks up an old, rusty penny, throws it away ; kicks pebbles and conchs. And then he hears a mighty roar coming from the sea ! A huge structure, a city rises from the waves ! His curiosity is insatiable, he decides to visit the sea city. The city is rich and magnificent, there's people everywhere selling their goods, all offering Nils the opportunity to purchase the finest merchs in the world. And he replies "Sorry, don't have any money...sorry..." He admires the streets and boulevards filled with commerce and traders, all asking him "Would the fine young gentleman buy my precious articles ?" And to all his embarrassed reply was "Terrribly sorry, I have no cash on me..." The hours fly. And one of the city dwellers comes to Nils, tears in his eyes, and tells him : "Time to go. You must leave." "Why ?" Nils asks him. "This place is absolutely fantastic !" To which the replies, "Fantastic, beautiful...but doomed. Please leave now." "But WHY?" repeats Nils "Because" the man says "our city was cursed. We grew rich and richer, we only cared for gold and silver, we forgot all the other beautiful and meaningful things in life." "But" the man goes on, "we get a chance. Every hundred years the city rises from the bottom of the ocean and if perchance someone who is on this lonely beach comes visit us and buys something, no matter what, the curse will be lifted." And it dawned on Nils. The rusty penny he had found and thrown away. "I can do it ! I can save you ! I know where I can find a penny, I'll purchase something and lift the curse !" "Too late" the man said again. "Go. Now" And Nils leaves the city with a heavy heart, returns to shore, and cries as he sees the cursed city sink into the ocean for the next hundred years. He cries bitter tears. That useless, old rusty penny. And he swears never judge things by size and looks again. He understands nobody knows it all, nobody really knows others and their problems, that, in life, we don't hold all the cards.

Hi Ryan, The witch mother is a figure described in some European witch trial records. Some accused witches described a sabbat or gathering where there was often a central female figure given special reverence, and often partnered with the devil. It is not always clear if she was a mortal woman, or a fairy or goddess.

It's really interesting that AB says he was taught that Koholet (Ecclesiastes) main message is "eat, drink, and praise G-d", because what Torah actually says is "eat, drink, and be joyful", from Koholet 8:16 - ושבחתי אני את־השמחה אשר אין־טוב לאדם תחת השמש כי אם־לאכל ולשתות ולשמוח והוא ילונו בעמלו ימי חייו אשר־נתן־לו האלהים תחת השמש - "So I commended mirth, that a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry, and that this should accompany him in his labour all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun."

Quick note for anyone interested, some of the versions of Rhodopis on youtube and the web are adapted from a very different 1920s story by Olive Beaupré Miller that is... we'll say culturally unauthentic....

Some see the origins of the Cinderella story in China - the clue - foot binding as practiced by the Chinese elite - small dainty feet were prized in Chinese women - fitting Cinderella's tiny feet into the glass shoe and the ugly sister's attempts to fit their feet into them.
