I agree with your view. I suppose it scratched an itch for some of the audience, but it didn't really fit with who they presented him as (which is what you said). I sure wish they had made a Longmire movie. I suppose they still can, but it will need a lot of recasting and won't be the same.

I agree with your opinions and evaluation of this show. Walt was an honorable man, but he had some serious character flaws. His worst flaws were his stubbornness and obsessiveness. They could be very detrimental to his career and his personal relationships. But flaws make for interesting main characters. I found Vic to be extremely annoying throughout the entire searies. Her jealousy and possessiveness of Walt were out of place early in the series while she was still married. She wanted to keep Walt from having a relationship with any other woman if she could not be that woman. Case in point, Lizzie. After she and her husband split, she started sleeping around like a stray cat. Vic was a selfish, manipulative hot mess. And don't get me started about how she talked through her nose all the time! Walt deserved better. No, I did not like he and Vic hooking up at the end of the series.

You are wrong about Vic being wrong for Walt. Their work together increased their regard for one another and Vic was as tough as Walt. She was smart, capable, and extremely loyal to Walt. Their chemistry was undeniable. The only problem with their finally acting upon their love for each other was that the last episode failed to make it clear that they would stay together. The last few lines were inane and really were farewell lines to the series, not to each other. Did Walt give up his job for her? Did she continue to work as a deputy? What did Walt say to his daughter about their relationship? It drives me nuts that Vic is questioning whether they were meant to be together. Walt’s growing love for her was seen in early episodes when her marriage was failing. From the early episodes we knew there was this undercurrent of attraction to each other, and to have her refute that at the end was ridiculous. Did they have children together? Did they stay together? I think they did. Vic understood Walt better than anyone. Vic loved him even through their exploration of other relationships, which derailed their getting together earlier. The audience knew Lizzie was wrong for him. I think Walt chose to retire because he knew she worried about him getting killed on the job. His great respect for her was a beautiful thing. His caring for her after she lost a baby was moving and genuine. He’s a decent man. So what if she had sex with others. He had other relationships too. (He did not have sex with Donna. That was obvious from her asking him if he knew how babies were made.) But his hesitation to get involved with Vic early on may have been his reluctance to engage with a subordinate on the job.
Katee Sackhoff played Vic with fire and tenacity and strength. She was no pushover. She wore her love for Walt openly; even while married. And he loved her too. He just couldn’t admit it as he was still grieving his wife. But he showed his love in many ways. . This was a great series and actors were exceptional. Loved these two actors for being generous to each other and respecting each other. They were meant to be together. Now a new series needs time be put into production. Let their stories continue!

Should you have read the novels instead of watching the TV show, the author turned gradually the relationship between Longmire and Vic into a romance (physically consumed) a long time ago.

Yep. As far as I was concerned, Vic had more red flags than a military parade in Beijing. Walt should have steered completely clear of her and gone with one of the other two.

Watch Justified. It’s a modern western and it’s really good.

Watched the show back when it was still on TV was dismayed when they cancelled it. Then I found out Netflix continued it and excitedly I rewatched it and continued with what Netflix had done. Loved much of it until the last few episodes, but I thought it was tolerable, I’d seen worse final arcs. Then the kiss and hookup happened and I was so disappointed. I turned the tv off with the hook up scene and didn’t finish the last 10 minutes. Just went looking for anyone who thought the same and came across this. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one disappointed

The two leads have incredible chemistry. No director and screenplay writer was going to waste that. The scripts have had a lot of missed character development and backstory. But that is due to the constraints of the weekly program construct. But it would have been a terrible waste of their obvious connection not to bring these two together. He was obviously very protective of her. And she expresses her emotions where he does not. These are two very good actors who have great chemistry. The series should be renewed.

Read the damn books - Walt's wife has been gone for many years. Vic seduces Walt, and they are a couple in the books. The most recent book has a major impact on this relationship. ALWAYS KNOW THE SOURCE MATERIAL, people....

A little late to the party but I can't tell you how relieved I am to find out I am not alone in my revulsion at the Sheriff and Vic hooking up. I can't even watch the episode where this happens. I love Katie Sackoff, but this pairing was so counterproductive and counter intuitive that it almost ruins Longmire for me, and I haven't loved a show like this in a long time. Walt isn't perfect, but with his code of honor he would have never slept with Vic. She is unstable, immature, as well as the epitome of some modern women; there is nothing modern about Sheriff Longmire even if they give him a cell phone. (The books are NOT the t.v. show).
Walt is having a beautiful, complicated relationship with the good doctor that has its issues but is good for him. Their chemistry is over the moon. They are of the same generation and understand each other. Their conversations are mature, deep, healthy and elevate Walt. Walt would not be attracted to Vic (who shows up with a six-pack to seduce him). Walt would not sleep with a co-worker. Walt has a code of honor, and some very fine common sense, that would have prevented him making this mistake. No one who watches this (who isn't a "shipper) would believe for one second this relationship could work or last or make our heroic Sheriff happy. It actually made me sad for Walt.
Walt has been tactfully and compassionately holding Vic off for several seasons. The gentleman he is would have continued to do the same, and mostly for her own good. I didn't think of it before but I believe you are right: this was fan service and it sucks. Character-wise, this was jarring and scarcely romantic. Vic leaving Walt alone and moving on (sacrifice) enhanced her character. The show would have deepened its feeling leaving Vic to tragedy and us with a male/female work relationship that's unique and beautiful because it stays professional and platonic. Hollywood just can't do it. As far as I'm concerned, a shockingly unhappy ending. But, bravo to you, sir.

Interesting. I have seen some incredible TV series, British and American. Tremendous plots and acting. Then, for some reason, the last two or three are pathetic. Did they change writers? Also, I am very much a realist (which ruins most entertainment for me). I promise you there's not a writer who has ever experienced a shooting range match, or watched a 100 pound woman go up against a 250 pound goon. And, almost always, the last episode becomes absurd leaving the audience deflated.

It's just a TV show. Get over it.
