      Yes you can. To be an actuary you need to pass a series of exams outside of university. An economics or math degree would complement that 😊

    Hello!
    Maybe my question goes to other fields. As, a person I like analysis a lot. This year, I will gratuate from bachelor at economics. I will have scholarship to a master of my choice (only masters, not exams like CFA,actuary... Included ). So, I am in interest of risk analysis, predictions,... and analysis stuff with math, statistics, economics. And I am in the middle of finance and actuary. What should I choose? Some told me that an actuary can beat an finance analyst.

    What do you refer to when you say "writing exams"? I'm a finance and Econ major, is it part of the actuarial science study?

    • @jgrtrx
      @jgrtrx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actuarial exams are sponsored by the SOA, CAS, CIA, etc. You have to study and write these exams outside of university academics. Good news is a decent amount of the content relates to finance. One should study about 300 hours for each exam. Ya want the salary ya gotta do a ton of work in the form of accreditation.

      I have asked some actuarial master student it’s okay you have to be good at math but don’t really need high level math. I found that some of master in actuarial science said accounting degree still acceptable, but it requires linear algebra and statistic based on calculus but my degree didn’t teach linear algebra;(.

    Does the national reputation of a school matter more than its actuarial reputation or vice versa? I currently attend a top 25 school in the US but it doesn't offer an actuarial program (major or minor, although they are apparently working on a minor). I passed up schools that are centers of actuarial excellence but were not ranked nearly as well. One was a really large public, but not one of the public ivies. Another was a smaller religious private university that is not at all anywhere near the tops of rankings. To compensate for the lack of actuarial program, I've been looking to start an actuarial club at my school. But I'm constantly conflicted between whether I made the right decision or not. I felt I could pick a school without an actual actuarial major because I was told most of the studying is on your own anyway, but actually going through it now i am not sure. Others have said that actuarial science is a limiting major that only applies to actuaries, but if I'm pretty sure that's what I wanna do it would make sense wouldn't it? Lastly, are VEE's necessary to pass as an undergrad? I know you cannot apply for VEE credit until you pass two exams, but this goes along with the major. Centers of actuarial excellence ensure they have courses that give VEE credit, while at my school I had to like nitpick classes and try and find ways to fulfill VEE requirements. Do you have any advice for any of this? Sorry for the long comment/question

    • @Actuaryelle
      @Actuaryelle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in Canada, and here we have a lot of schools that offer actuarial programs, so we tend to mostly hire from those schools, though not exclusively. I wouldn't say that a school's reputation matters here, but I can't say that that's true for every hiring manager.
      If you can't get your VEEs at school, you can always take extra online courses through the SOA and get them done. I wouldn't stress out about them. Try your best to get them done during your undergrad, but if you can't, it isn't the end of your actuarial career!

    • @jgrtrx

      I'm a math and stats major at a CAE university in the US. You shouldn't have much trouble with VEE economics and accounting credits. Math/Stats and Finance/Econ are great majors to pursue actuarial science if you want to keep your options open--however VEE may take some strategy to complete at uni. The market for actuaries where I am is very saturated. Math degrees will always have more diverse demand than AS. I'm studying for the exams and learning to code to maximize my employability plus the stuff interests me. Hope that answers some Q's.

    I was really struggling on deciding what career path to choose. I do like finance, and after the stats class I just had, I realized I enjoyed statistics more than other subjects as well. I was told about the actuary career by a family member, and I think after watching some of your videos, it has reinforced my decision to become one. Something funny: I actually had the question on whether or not to get my masters, or to take the exams, and you answered that for me.
    Thank You. Keep making videos.

    Do you have any advice for someone trying to review prerequisite math (so as to be able to start studying actuarial material) and no longer in school? Without the accountability provided by school how can you ensure you make good progress?

    • @Actuaryelle
      @Actuaryelle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say, make a schedule, and find a way to keep yourself accountable. Either by rewarding yourself when you achieve goals or telling your friends to yell at you when you fall behind. Self-study is a big part of becoming an actuary. Good luck 😀

    #AskAnActuary I'm about to graduate college with a bachelors in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science (I have a focus more on Pure Mathematics). When looking for a job for a Pure Mathematician, I'm finding next to nothing since I can't teach. I figured I could just take a few statistics and economics classes and just be an Actuary, but I'm afraid that the transition might not be that easy since there is such a difference between the 2 fields of Mathematics. Is there anything else you could recommend I do to make this transition?
