Its officially spring in Montreal and it's starting to get warm here! Were feeling really settled in Canada after a couple of months, but were starting to discover all kinds of new things as it gets warmer and the city comes even more to life! You will notice that the transition to summer is very compressed in Canada. It feels like you go from early spring to the first heat wave in a matter of days. As a result we schedule all our outdoor activities in a two to three month period. You will notice that in all Canadian cities. You are lucky to be in Montreal because no city does it as well. It's like summer is one big continuous celebration.
Montreal hosts more festivals than any other city in the world: 110+ festivals a year, many of which are completely free! You're in for a real treat as you discover Montreal summer for the first time. Please keep us updated! Looking forward to more videos!
In Quebec, we are like cats we have many lives. Actually we have 4 lives per year. It’s always evolving, in summer we are outside moving, eating, drinking and going to festivals, autumn we are in nature and having private parties (we have big backyards, so we getting slowly inside), winter is cosy a lot of private parties and winter outdoor activities outside of the city. Spring is what you are experiencing. I think it is why we are happy, we are evolving with our environment and taking advantage of what it offers.

The reason is we have been hibernating for 6 months and as soon as you can get outside we run. We also like to start wearing our spring/summer clothes as soon as possible. When you have been putting on layers for 6 months, walking out of the house with just your clothes is so freeing. In general most Canadians are happy. We live in a wonderful country and we like to meet people and chat. That's just the way we are, so enjoy it. People will wear shorts as early and as late as possible. You will start seeing the weather cooling off in late October, after Thanksgiving and snow may begin in November. Enjoy the summer, even September can be nice and warm. Glad you are enjoying the city. Ottawa is a big bike town also. Have you been able to visit it yet?
Summers in Montreal are amazing. I live in Central Florida but i spend my summers in Montreal. Love the city.
All you have said is true and real. When the weather gets warmer, people in Montreal get out and start to enjoy the city: parks, kids in the streets, terraces, free activities, …
You have that this is (literally) spring camp. The official « pivot » is the Grand Prix weekend (usually first week of June): at that point, it is really summer and people enjoy the city with the before mentioned activities. So if you think the city got alive in spring, wait for that « pivot » point: it gets to another level.
Montrealer here. What you say is on point! Weatherwise, you'll notice we don't have much of spring weather here. We usually go from lousy out of winter weather to short short spring and then quickly tipping into summer weather.
We are lucky if we get 4 months of nice weather so as soon as it’s nice we are outdoors.
It is the same in Denmark. As if we come out of hibernation when you get a sunny day in spring.Yearning for summer.
It sounds like a great combination of North American and European culture! Although it must be very challenging moving with a family to a new country, it seems you‘re all experiencing a lot of positive now!! 💪 I moved with my husband and twin 2 year olds to Germany from Minnesota 5 years ago. You’ll also notice people are crammed in sunny areas and shady areas are deserted. There is another level of happy in Montréal and it’s about to begin. Soon, festivals will begin end they’re back-to-back until the end of August. We take full advantage of the warmer weather and longer days. Winter is time for cocooning and hibernation. Through the years, your body will adapt to the seasons and you’ll see that 10°C in September feels colder than 10°C in April. I enjoy your videos. It’s great to get your perspective. i love montreal. canada wide, we soak up the daylight hours after hybernating for so many months. wait till you see mount royal in the summer. it's covered in blankets and apartment dwellers are sitting enjoying the outdoors.
At the end of May, beginning of June a bunch of streets around the downtown core and Plateau will become pedestrian only and closed to cars -- Ave Mont-Royal, Wellington St, Ste Catherine, Duluth Est, St Denis, de Castelnau, and a few others.
Some of what you're experiencing may be a Northeast North American phenomenon. I'm originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which is definitely a cold place, but it wasn't until we moved to Buffalo, New York that we experienced the kind of spring thaw you describe. A couple things bring people out: huge snow storms (everyone shovels and socializes, and the spring warm-up. And people are happy when the sun shines. That said, we definitely aren't Montreal and will be visiting this summer for that unique French Canadian thing. By the way, I followed your Paris adventures, and I'm really enjoying the Quebec chapter. My wife and I spend a lot of time in Canada because of our proximity (2 miles to the Peace Bridge), but we've just begun to explore Quebec, and you're feeding the flame.
I'm from Northern Alberta, and it's definitely normal to get "used" to the winter weather because it's so long! It's very normal that on the first above 0 day that everyone is outside in their T-shirts, especially kids. It might be a tad colder in northern AB than Montreal but I've never went through a winter there to be sure 😊. Always wanted to though! Love the videos! ❤️

What I don't like from summer in southern part of Quebec province
is not the so hot weather but
the high level of humidity .
It's normally getting nippy around mid-October. Real cold starts at Christmas. So... you didn't miss much winter here! Bienvenue à Montréal.

According to the copenhagen world biking index : Montreal has been on the world best biking cities since 2011 with 900 km of bike lanes . Vancouver is in Copenhagen index since 2019 ... There is no other cities in Canada on the top 20 .
Montreal closed 10 major streets for pedestrians only for the summer starting mid may until September 5 th . Mont-Royal street , Ste-Catherine East , Ontario Est, Duluth east, St-Denis, Ste Catherine west, around Jean Talon Market, Bernard street, De Castelneau , Wellington
Montreal allows picnic in parks with wine and beers .

A sunny day at Jeanne Mance Park/Mt Royal is magic when it comes to the people. Fontaine park is also nice. The amount of festivals that take place in a summer here is crazy
of course about french language, it's different from France & other french speaking countries, but there is a logical reason for that. We still use a kind of ancient form of regional french language that was much in use in the 1600's. In 1760, the british took over Québec after the 7 years war. Most of the links with France were cxut during british rule. In France, the french academy reformed the french language with the Paris accent in an attempt to normalize it. This reform didn't get here until the 1960's, so we kept the old french used before this language reform. And the mix of french & british cultures changed the language with a lot of english words being integrated in Québec's french.
We have the same phenomena here in MN, as soon as we can take off the parka, the shorts, bikes, scooters all come out & enjoy the outdoors! Terraces are a thing here too, but they start popping up in May through September! Glad you’re experiencing what I loved about Montreal! ❤

Montréal is two cities: "Montréal l'hivers" and "Montréal l'été". Summer Montréal is such a nice place to live. Festival season is starting soon: Jazz festival, Francofolies etc. Great times are ahead for the whole family!

I had not seen your video for several months and I was so not expecting you to explain that you are living in Montreal now. I am a little late but welcome.! I can already see that you are discovering how Montreal is a great place to live. It is a big city with a small town vibe. You will have the best of everything here. The seasons, the family life, the restaurants and bars. I am so excited to hear what you think of our city.
Yes, Montreal is pretty happening when the weather is nice. I totally agree with your characterization of the city. It sounds like you and your family are enjoying yourselves, and I'm glad to hear that.
I think it's great that you arrived in winter and got to experience Montreal in this direction, cold to warm. It would have been so depressing to go the other way around and not be prepared for everyone going back inside and seeing all the terraces disappear!

Glad things are going well! Definitely a Midwestern climate thing to wear shorts when it thaws out. Sounds like a healthy - and happy- place to be. Bisous too!
Total Canadian thing, same in Vancouver. Once it hits 15C, people are in summer clothes and the parks and seawalls are packed until sunset. Here it is more because of the endless grey we get in winter. All sunny warm evenings until October are packed with people everywhere. Seeing everyone out will pull you out, you feel absolutely guilty being home if everyone is out. Also because of our northern latitudes, our sunsets at after 9pm in summer so 6pm feels more like 2pm.
Ah! Yes. The Emergence. 😉 It happens here in the Seattle area, too. We don't get quite the extreme snow, but MONTHS of gray and wet. When the nice weather hits (usually in May, so now! Yay!) EVERYONE goes outside. We feel like it's necessary to get outside for the fleeting sunshine. We go out our doors and blink at the sky like mole people. It's kind of funny, but it's very much a thing.

I'm an anglophone from western Canada. Everything on your list seem like Canada wide things except the summer alleyway thing lol
what you will find that in Canada temp is relative. for excample in spring when it is 10c you will see people in shorts becasue they have gotten used to the cold of winter but in fall when you see that same 10c you will see people putting on pants and sweaters and jackets becasue they have gotten used to the heat of summer. I would suggest if you get a chance to visit New Brunswick the only bilingual province in Canada. when they speak good french it would be pobably closer to what you are used to in france but what you will find espeseally around the moncton area is that they tend to jump from english to french and back again in one sentance. they also speak a dialect they call she-ack (not spelt currect just spelt the way it would sound) that is a mixter af french english and french words we still use that are from like 400 years ago. if you think the people in Montreal are freinly wait till you meet some Acadians. I hope you enjoy your life in Canada and maybe even consider staying.

Do you feel Montreal is more kid/family friendly than Paris?
I am going to be working on 2 festivals this summer: Les Francopholie and Le festival de Jazz. These are 2 music festivals, they're totally free. So if you're looking for a cultural activity, this is one of the many free activities available. You were saying where were these people hiding, but at these festivals, at the place des festivals it is going to be crowded.

It haven't even really started yet. Wait until the commercials streets becomes pedestrian and the occasional local streets festivals.
Also try to go to the Tamtams at the feet of the Mont Royal on Sundays, especially if it's sunny.
Ad a Canadian you will notice people when shorts in spring at 15° but when it’s 15° in autumn people will wear pants at 15° because it feels a little chilly when the humidity has it feeling 40°C in the summer! There is definitely weather whiplash in many regions in Canada
For me, 10c is a hot in early April, 15c is hot until mid June and 25c is very very hot. I’m from northeastern Québec and the weather is colder here so basically everything is hot for me ahah
I think there was this meme on FB that popped back up a few weeks ago, showing on the one side, someone whining in 15°C temp inside, dressed as if it was the heart of winter and on the the other, someone yelling like crazy in 15°C outside weather, dressed in shorts and sleeveless shirt.
Might have to see with the sun, calm winds and just, as you said, months of being trapped inside. Because usually, people aren't "being lazy" outside in the winter like they could be in the warmer days of spring and summer, hence the absence of people in most parks. Doesn't mean you can't find a single soul outdoors in the winter: you just have to know where to go to find some.
Lol even in mild Vancouver people tend to scurry home after work on cold, dark nights so the difference when it warms up is pretty noticeable here too. I see it particularly when driving after rush hour in warmer months with more daylight- "who ARE all these people on the road?" From May to Sept we're much more likely to extend the day with leisure activities and not just race home after work so the roads, sidewalks, trails, beaches etc swell up with people. You gotta enjoy it while it lasts!
No heaters in cafes in Paris anymore..unless electric …Parks full in Paris too when nice day. More people on streets.. more tourists.. Montreal is a gr8 place to raise kids.
But it is not the same activites . In Montréal , people are on hammock , praticing tightrope walking , BBQ , watching moving etc .
People suddenly appeating and happy in the spring is typically Québec. Also chilling in parks especially at lunch. Shorts everywhere in Canada. Terrace? terrasse please and Quebec City is the best for the terrasse. Strolling outside at 3:00 a.m. is perfectly normal.

I am surprised that you are surprised that library cards are free. Are they not free in France? Are they not free in your US home town? They are free in Los Angeles, California. I just always assumed they were free everywhere. Our library also has many free programs and events, but I know that is not typical.

So when you are above 0, believe me it feels warm. People in Quebec are nice, very different from Ontarians that are very fake.
as a frenchman living in France, I never get used to the fact that the french (in an overall impression) are more often than no, in a bad mood, it's on their face (my face too probably). There's also a sense of suspicion, judgements and criticisms. An overall negativity. That's why I need to get out of France and see how other people are. Whenever I go to the US I feel like I'm welcomed and feel the positibe energy. Have you noticed that about french people too, it gets old after a while.
