      If they really did sponsor him that's hilarious, I'm sensing some sarcasm though

      As they should. He uses it in every video and this one he has 5 cans beside him while he works. He probably single handedly keeps their business alive. Lmao.

    Congratulations on what is pretty much the dream sponsor, just need Stanley and some producer of linseed oil on board then you'll have the holy triumvirate!
    That's a grand looking tool as well, seems to chew through the wood no bother and would I be right in thinking you can angle it on those radiused metal brackets as well, or are they just there for rigidity? 🤔

    • @EoinReardon
      @EoinReardon  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      cheers lad, yes you can angle the brackets but i find it doest cut as well and hardly at all past 45 degrees

    My grandpa was a carpenter of 9 generations, I didn't think about how I watched him my whole life and how many things I picked up from watching, your videos are starting to awaken something in me. I guess im going to end up like mum buying too many anitque tools from Op shops and garage sales to restore haha.
    I gotta go raid his tool shed.

    You truly are an inspiration to me . Ive recently taken an interest in wood working and I've been making toys for my son. Got a small toy mallet for him and I've got another in production for my best friends son as well . Thank you for showcasing this amazing trade especially the hand tools.

    It's commendable that you take the time and effort to bring old tools back to life.

    Eoin, have you ever tried boiling rusty metal parts in water? I know it sounds like it would rust more, but it actually turns the red rust into the black oxide, magnetite. It's the same process that is used to blue guns. Then you coat the part in oil, and you have beautiful "blue" metal parts that are also more protected against further rusting. It cleans parts up beautifully with much less elbow grease

    Soak your rusty parts in white distilled vinegar for a few days and it will be rust free. After removing, rinse the parts with baking soda and distilled water to kill the acidity and prevent from flash rusting. Soak with WD-40 afterwards.

    So the beam drill doesn't drive the bit into the wood, but relies on the screw action of the bit, just as a brace and auger bit? Is the size of the bit dependent on the specific beam drill - can you swap out your 1 1/2" bit with a 2" bit on the same drill? You did a nice restoration job - it certainly looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

    Hello Eoin...Just started following you today as this link caught the attention of one of my own students...Overall, a good job, but one must be careful in "restoration" to not remove the original patina from a vintage artifact like this timber frame boring machine. Rust that inhibits function and/or performance can certainly be removed but not too aggressively...On your mortise, you could have finished off with a third hole down the center (which is standard) and your end cuts should be chisel scored first before the side and before boring as well. There is more too, but you will learn those "tracks" and methods from the tool more than a teacher can ever instruct you in...Glad to have found the channel and look forward to seeing how you developed...

    I love the video, the content is great, videography is perfect, but adding just a little bird song or Irish fiddle in the sped up break down section would improve the early part of the video.

    You seriously need to up your presentation, take a look at others who restore and who have big numbers of subscribers to get a sense of how they "present" their efforts. You have many good points going for you, but you lack a focus on a primary need to tell a story plus educate the viewers while you express your craftsman skills. Imitate then innovate, carving out those who love what you do, what you find to restore, and the finished project. Good luck mate! (USA-designer)

    • @zachsmith98
      @zachsmith98 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Nah, there was literally nothing wrong with the presentation of this video.

    • @JayCWhiteCloud
      @JayCWhiteCloud ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry...I'm afraid I can agree with your assessment...and to validate I'm both a traditional crafts person and a teacher of those and related skills. Some of the best "TH-camrs" out there don't even talk...they just work...like Mr. Chickadee of whom I'm friends and have mentored for almost a decade...
      Clearly, Eion is young and new to much of this so is presenting from that perspective and a bit "unrefined" while he both learns his trade and develops a "behind the camera" personality...With that, over time, he will improve I'm sure...
      The worst thing he could do is "educate" and/or "look at others" without actually knowing what to look for. TH-cam is full of "clickbait" channels with high numbers but hideous content and advice to the viewers...
