UNBELIEVABLE ... I remember this performance clearly, like it was just yesterday ... I have heard so many versions of this song and this one remains my favorite of all, nothing else compares to it, just incredible ... to date, for me, this is the best American Idol performance ever and one of the best vocal performances of all time done anywhere, period.
America did appreciate real talent. What happened with Melinda's elimination is that Melinda was obviously going to join the finale, it was between Jordin and Blake, and their fanbases voted so hard they didn't think to consider that Melinda would be the one out of the finale.... but it happened. Jordin and Blake were fine contestants but they weren't Melinda
her competitors were like cans of beer that left you with a hangover and a bad headache. she was like a bottle of fine wine. truly exquisite. i wish she makes an album of remakes and cover of classics and standards. she harks us back to an era long gone when singers were just that.
I stopped watching American Idol after this fine singer got dumped. Actually, I started watching American Idol when I saw Melinda Doolittle's audition. I often wonder what became of her. Such talent.

It was over produced with strings, bad recording and a really shitty mix.If only she had some one like my old pal Ed Michele, from impulse records to produce she might have gotten traction..another great potential shot down from over production.....sad

Was watching a video of someone singing this song. Thought of Ms. Melinda. Boy oh boy I will never forget how she sang this song. One of my favorite perfomances on American Idol. She tore this song up. She had such confidence and delivered well. Go girl!!!!!
Melinda's problem was very likely that she sings way too well for her own sake. Today's pop stuff the "Idol" franchise needs to fit neatly into their ideas: very cute and sexy people singing kinda well - a notch above mediocre will do. Melinda is such a sweet person and a total world class vocalist - I can't stop watching this. I'm sure musicians all over the world would love to play in a band with her. 30 years ago she would have been a star.
I couldn't care less if she did not win the American idol, in my heart she will forever be a winner. 🤗 Melinda knew inside her heart that she was better than anyone else and she did not have to prove it, she went there so people would recognize her voice, like she said she no longer has wanted to be the back singer.. that's right girl you show us that you sang your heart out. That girl is way, way too good to fit in today's non-existent pop music world and the sick "busnes models" of the few CEO's which remain until they all crash and burn. Here's a true vocalist: sweet, modest and with a set of pipes which is out of this world. If I was a member of this live band, I couldn't have hepled but stop playing and throgh me hands up in the air!!!! Im sure some of the lads in the band were smiling all the time.

I deliberately went back to this vid after hearing Amber singing it on this year's Idol..Melinda definitely delivers this version flawlessly...in my opinion the reason she did not win..is as someone rightly said the younger generation might not vote..Amber is youthful and will thus be the eyes of the youths and producers..and after doing that Whitney..I think Amber even if she does not top the votes..will be the pick for many producers after this season is over...
I don't watch AI anymore, but I remember this being the top performance, all rounds, all contestants...why she was not crowned winner is why no one should really give a shit about AI anymore.
