Those half walls were used as planters back in the day. They used to fill them with lava rocks and put artificial plants/greenery in them. I like that they put covers on them. I would not use them at all or once you redo Gus' room that would determine what I would do with the half wall. Can turn them into bookshelves or do away with them to open up the room.

It’s more expensive but I would add a full wall, french doors, raise the floor and make it a home office. Kids can do hw or crafts in there or parents can do bills there.

We had these half walls in our house, complete with gravel and fake plants. We tried to make them into shelves but eventually just took them out.

We had something similar in the house I grew up in . Ours always have living green house plants, which is why it was metal lined.

    A fabulous decluttering session Jodi.
I'd move you beautiful cabinet to th opposite wall and put a large mirror above it rather than a coat rack which would look a mess in no time. But you couldstore hats, scarves and gloves in the cabinet. A lamp would look good on top with a tray or bowl for keys.
Loving your video's. Keep up the hard work x

Just saw this video n totally agree. A coatrack would clutter in no time...good idea w cabinet on opp. Wall w a mirror. Find one that would blend in colors or accents w cabinet. Yes, keep the plant box covered! It would be low maintenance. Your focal point is your clock....good to minimize the entry

I always think I want a coat tree until I see it in full use. They tend to make the area feel and look cluttered when they are full. I finally decided to just stage the one I have with a cute summer hat, scarf and bag. No one in the family is allowed to put coats. We use it only for guests-which is amazing. Love to have a place for them to go. I love it so much!

Would the green cabinet look better on the other side of the door, where the table was? Have a nice plant on it
Coat racks can tend to look cluttered when it's full, but it's a waste of space if you don't use it

If you’ve always wanted a clothes rack , then maybe you should get it.
Personally I think it’s good to have some empty spaces around the house, keeps the house looking less cluttered. Plus you have the cupboard in the foyer.
Maybe Donna Jean can stored her excess craft supplies in those half walls…I love them by the way💕

I grew up with my grandmother as well & inherited her antique mantle clock that chimes so beautiful. My dad brought it to her when he was serving in Germany & I feel so blessed to have it! I love your clock & beautiful home. You are a beautiful soul & I’m upset that someone said that to you. They should have offered to help you prepare for Christmas instead of taking it from you!

We have a mid century home with a planter box located near the front door. We were able to remove the metal container portion by simply lifting it out of the wood half wall. It was not even nailed down. Perhaps you could do the same. It would be a great place to store hats, scarves and gloves. Love your videos; the entry looks wonderful. TFS.

Jodi- your openness and honestly about your story with the house clutter and feelings, family, etc. are so real life and your story is so much like my parents/my childhood. Thanks for sharing. My husband and I have done the same as you- moved into a huge house that we never would have dreamed of having (too much house for us, really) and I’ve been fighting to feel decluttered and host a lot of events so that I have checkpoints to keep up with my clutter!!
Tom was such a good video host!!(PS love the coat rack idea!!! So cute, and hospitable to have a nice spot for guests coats and a little umbrella to walk them out with! Also it would not block the vent over on that wall)

New subscriber here! An awesome job decluttering but what's most inspiring is your internal transformation story. Being born "perfect" is easy. What's not easy is having the realization and awakening that change has to happen in an area of your life and then completely transforming your thought processes and habits to creste lasting change. That's the impressive part to me. And as a bonus, you're now inspiring others to do the same. Great great job!! You should be so proud of yourself.

Those half walls/planter inserts, I would pour a layer of paint to just cover it all… 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍 It’s amazing your kids help!!! It’s good for them to learn cleaning & organizing is a part of life & doesn’t have to be horrible! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 I’m organizing my couponing stockpile & pantry foods… they’re all stashed in boxes & bags but I’m making a better system & rotating stuff so I can use the older stuff & food first ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Coatracks end up being a clutter magnet, maybe a bowl or cute basket on that little cabinet for mail and/or keys… those half walls cubbies could hold seasonal stuff like hats, glasses, scarves, sunscreen, etc but maybe a few baskets inside to organize… on the empty wall maybe a bench to put on/take off shoes, and maybe a small hanging hooks on a piece of wood (hopefully makes sense) to hang guest coats only, maybe a small mirror 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

Since you love family gatherings. Maybe you may consider making your formal living room a dining room. You have a table and hutch and you could add a sideboard and extra chairs. It’s even big enough for a Christmas tree. Make your now dining room your office and video / art room. Put a French door on to shut off from front door. It’s just a thought.

You could maybe try paint thinner or nail polish remover to get the paint out of the storage space. I would go with hooks on the wall for coats instead of a coat rack, it would leave the floor clear and make the space feel bigger and less cluttered. I know you mentioned wanting to re-do that front livingroom space. I would move the furniture in the foyer there if I was you. Looks great Jodi! I would not put anything in the planters? On the half wall, it would just be an out out sight out of mind storage probably. Although I was thinking maybe storing candles in there, easy to grab when you need one. Or knock down the half walls and open up the room! I would not personally get a coat hanger stand. It might look cluttered? It look so nice and open now. Maybe a bench there though yo sit and out your shoes on before you go out the door. Where do you store your coats now? In the closet in entry way? Love hearing your story while you declutter.
Ha! True about he never ending decluttering! I have been decluttering on TH-cam since 2015, although not as seriously as you have been doing. I have done the minimalism game last year with some other TH-camrs and got rid of over 400 items in one month but you probably have reached that too by now.
I don’t think we are ever done decluttering, we bring things in our houses and eventually they no longer serve us and we need to get rid of them eventually.
    Kudos darling! 💜👍

Awesome! Inspirational as always! So maybe not a coat rack, those can get cluttered easy. What about a hall tree? They have the hooks with a bench? Decorative pillows or something on bench then? I love the rustic ones, but they have to stay tidy and clean! I ADORE Karrie Lynn! She has two channels; her DIY and her cleaning. She is always doing some sort of furniture makeover. You should collab with her!

Yes I follow both of her channels. I love her videos. I would LOVE to do a collab with her but I’d never ask her. She has a much bigger following than me and typically TH-camrs will do collabs to help promoted each other’s channels. I would clearly win in that circumstance 😂

    Hi Jodi. Another great video!
I don’t normally like to give my opinion on someone else’s decorating, but you asked for our opinion. I wouldn’t get a coat rack because even though there won’t be clutter in your foyer anymore, I think the coat rack and “all” it brings with it, will make it look cluttered.

I would turn the half walls into planter boxes, but I also have over 35 houseplants in a 2 bedroom apartment so take that as you will

Hi Jody. I just love your videos & stories about you & your family. I would love to have your Grandfather clock, it's beautiful. We have a wall one not as pretty but love to hear it chime! I think those half walls should use the space for plants maybe book shelves or take them out all together & make it all open. I think your foyer is beautiful & you make it your way. Love your videos & joy for life & improving to make your home 🏡 beautiful. Also those soon to be hosting again family holidays! Love your laugh 😃! ♥️

Shari I just adore my grandfather clock. I bet yours is beautiful too. For me I just love hearing the chimes ❤️❤️
Yes it seems they were built as planters. I guess that was popular in the 70’s when my house was built.

Looking good. I’d paint the tops of the storage and leave them empty unless in need of storage. If so then put seasonal things in there (hats, mittens, etc). I’d also move the green furniture piece to the other side of the door. The coat rack would be another place for things to accumulate. Only get if need coat storage otherwise let it be for now.

Consider moving green cabinet on opposite wall with mirror above. I find coat trees messy looking and instead would invest in buying mirror to install over cabinet. Great job on decluttering.

I have been putting wallpaper stickers on as a backsplash in my kitchen. Found some fun stickers 12 X 18” at Dollar Tree for $1.25 apiece, so it has been an inexpensive project. Of course, this also means that I am deep cleaning and decluttering the counters, as well. My husband and I are liking how it looks so far.

Yes Jodi!! Another job tackled! You are so awesome, sweet lady! So...I am STILL working on my office slash craft room. We moved into this house almost 4 years ago and it is probably half the size of our last house. It has been brutal for me to go through and downsize all the stuff that we brought over to this house! There are stacks and piles that take up most of our garage.....yikes! I did get alot sorted and donated over this past summer but....oy vey.....there is still so much to go through! I know I will get there! You motivate me more than I can put into words! Your sweet face and your ...hello! Hello! HELLO! brings me much needed smiles! Thank you for that! Cant wait to see what you have in store for next week! Sending you so many hugs!~ Cat from Colorado
