Hey, Graham, thanks for posting this. I'm making the transition from digital hardware recording to Pro Tools and stuff like this really helps me get up to speed with the ins and outs of software recording. You have excellent teaching skills, and I really appreciate your sharing of your knowledge and experience!
This tutorial really saved my day. I used to program my ritardandos and now I found out I can use the pencil, which really is a time SAVER! Thanks a lot!
Yea, ever since I got heavily into production most music becomes a smattering of heartless over-analysis of technique, and mix. Helps to reset and remember why you are here. Thank you.
You are awesome. Thank you! I wish Protools was as clear with all of their little annoying symbols as you are in one simple tutorial. From Protools hell to relief thanks to you!
Who knew about that tapping thing to calculate the meter. Wow! Thank you again!!!! (Why can't Protools just mention that somewhere on the screen?. Arggg!!!)
I have a song of 95 BPM, and I need to gradually change the tempo to 105 BPM on the last 4 measures of the song. SOmehow I don't see the red diamond sign on the tempo, am I missing something here? I am using Pro Tools 11 PLease advise. Thanks Hanif
I have a question. I recently learned how to create a tempo map from an imported audio file. I have two different audio files that I need to sync to a tempo map, that obviously has two different tempos. If I click the + symbol to add a new tempo, will that mess up the audio file I had synced to the first tempo.
I just ran into this issue yesterday and coould not figure it out. Thank you for saving the day...again. ~Marty

Hey Graham, thanks for the great videos. I'm having a problem with automating the tempo. When I draw the line with the pencil tool, it just changes the tempo in that range and pushes the bars according to it, in other words if I drew the line for 2 bars it changes the tempo not in 2 bars but in exact range that I drew(samplewise). I'm on pt11 btw. Do you have any opinion on this? Thanks
Great video on tempo change. I have a special request. Can we change the tempo of the drum track only and keep the rest as is? please advise. Thanks, Hanif
When you record an audio clip after doing tempo automation, does it stretch out the clip itself depending where, on the song, I put my cursor? I have FL Studio and it does that so I can’t record audio; I have to have it pre-recorded. If Pro Tools actually is a better option in regards to my problem, I might think of changing DAW’s.
Hey just curious, Any chance you know how to open the transport bar with a quickie? I’m on a MacBook Pro so I don’t have the numeric keypad. If not, is there a way to turn “Count Off” on and off with a shortcut? Any help would be highly appreciated.
I got my answer once again my brotha, thanks. Is pro tools just like any other audio editor or whats the difference because I have PT 10 and I hear that its just about the same as an inexpensive one.
Awesome video Graham! Just curious, how would you go about tempo mapping a song if the band didn't know what bar it changed at? So, if there was a tempo change at the bridge for example and you've never heard the song before and they don't know what measure it's at, how would you attack that situation? Also, here's an idea for a future video that I wouldn't mind hearing you talk about. Convolution reverb and how to record IRs. I think that would be an interesting vid! Thanks dude!
Good Day Graham...Anthony here from South Africa. Your vids are God-sent and help me monumentally to spice up my songs; however, can this osng tempo change apply to an already recorded track..i.e i done a few tracks(including vox) and realised that the beat was a bit to fast; can this be applied in this instances?
Ok. can I record tempo changes while tapping? I got an audio file with tempo changes and need to fine those for syncing he audio with more instruments.
Thank you for this useful video it's awesome. Let me just ask - does this also work in Pro Tools SE that comes with USB microphone? I'm seriously thinking about purchasing one and this is the thing I need to do. Thank you :-)
I've saved this video and reference it whenever I forget how to do this. Thanks for uploading it and thanks for saying Merry Christmas and not trying to be politically correct.
Great video , great lesson, great audio, great voice . Best on the web. Keep it up! Really good best of all its simple straight to the point and extra info help tips . Thanks again .
THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!! This is exactly what I needed to learn, and you are such a great teacher! Thank you for making it also understandable and not feeling overwhelming!
how do you change the size of the increments on the ruler? I just want it to show measure by measure instead of a line how ever many measures apart it decides.
I hope I don't ruin your day too much here. ritard is short for ritardando which is the italian term in music used for a gradual slowing of tempo. Continue your day made day :)
I'm on Windows so it may be a different key on mac, but you simply hover over it with your mouse. If you hold the Alt key, you will see the little hand with a "minus" sign. Then just click the marker to remove it!
Why won’t it allow me to double click the red arrow next to the tempo marker? Is it my software or is something not set up correctly in order to change the tempo.
Tap Tempo; Easier way: Double click the red diamond (or + icon) than tap "T" to manually tap the tempo. Both ways work but this is easier since you're already in that box.
Hold the Alt key while you hover the mouse over the marker. It should show the hand with a "minus" sign, then just click to remove! I'm on windows so the key may be different for mac.
Hitting the red triangle did nothing! Using the transport window did work! Next up I suppose I will need to know how to change the tempo during a song!?!
9 years later still helping! Thank you!
10 years later still come back for something I need to fix or change

Thank you so much! I was struggling to make the tempo slow down gradually... this was a huge help!
I've watched a ton of tutorials and this is the first I've seen this. Thanks!
You are awesome. Thank you! I wish Protools was as clear with all of their little annoying symbols as you are in one simple tutorial. From Protools hell to relief thanks to you!
This video has just saved a project I am working on right now.

I import a drum wav file into protools. Bpm 130
I want to change to 110bpm. What is the best way to do this?
You sound a bit depressed in this video, did you change your voice over mic from your earlier videos or something?
Love the videos btw!

Great video. Sorry if I missed it, but which version of Pro Tools was this displayed on?

Graham, how do we DELETE a tempo marker from the session?
i fucking hate pro tools shit i cant delete that fucking marker
I'm on Windows so it may be a different key on mac, but you simply hover over it with your mouse. If you hold the Alt key, you will see the little hand with a "minus" sign. Then just click the marker to remove it!
option+click the green down arrow on mac
Incredible explanation man !!! Thanks !!! Subscribing right now.
Now, how does Pro Tools do multiple time signatures? I myself work in REAPER, personally, but I am interested in Pro Tools, and how it works.
very helpful, and very clear and articulate!
Excellent. What I do not know how to do, is how to change the metronome for example, from 4/4 to 7/8 in the middle of the song.
I’m trying to do this after I finished the mix and it don’t work , only works on the click track
Why won’t it allow me to double click the red arrow next to the tempo marker? Is it my software or is something not set up correctly in order to change the tempo.
@ Cesar Gallegos I concur. Thanks a Mill. Recording Rev from Hunters Moon studio Ireland.
Dude you are awesome! This is exactly what I needed
