Carlisle Cullen was born in 1640 in London, England and is the founder and leader of the Olympic coven. He is the second husband of Esme Cullen and the adoptive father of Emmett, Alice, Edward Cullen, and Jasper and Rosalie Hale. He is also the adoptive father-in-law of Bella Swan and adoptive grandfather of Renesmee Cullen. In his human life, Carlisle was very compassionate, when he was turned this manifested into unparalleled compassion that allowed him to perfect his lifestyle as a "vegetarian" among vampires, to the point that he is able to completely resist the temptation of human blood even if it is in large amounts and pass this restraint to his family.

It says in this video how they all met each other. Carlisle met Esmee when she was young in hospital from a broken leg, he met Edward's mother and then changed Edward to have a companion, he turned Esme years later, he met Rose after she was beaten in the street, Alice met Jasper and had a vision that they were with the Cullens so she sought them out

Or imagine what would have happened if Esme died. Carlisle would most likely have killed himself (with the help of the Volturi obvi) or he would have changed completly (wouldn't talk anymore, would always stay alone, ...) which led to the hole family falling apart.
If that happens I think Edward would probably replace Carlisle as the Cullen’s Patriarch, but yeah it would be very difficult for the family for a few decades - maybe even for a century.

Carlisle is NOT actually an adopted Father. He was considered their real Father, because he turned them into vampires when they were dying. In vampire society, turning someone into a vampire made you their parent/leader. Of course, this has to be kept a secret from humans.

Carlisle was one of those characters in the book that didn't mind. He was a good father figure, but I think his loneliness got to him too much. One thing about Carlisle is that he sometimes reminded me of Louie from Anne Rice's Vampires, in how he hated to be a vampire. However I give him credit for making himself educated and useful to others.
Louis is another vampire I have a pretty big crush on. I desperately wanna give him a giant hug for all he’s been through

When they came to destroy the Cullen Coven that all changed when Alice showed Aro his future. He hasn't given up on breaking apart the Cullen Coven. He now has eye on Bella because of her psychic shielding ability. Aro is like a dog with bone because Bella's ability would further strengthen his coven.

The detail & research Stephenie put into them are my favorite parts of the books!! Especially when you read the guides, etc. The amount of thought she’s put into creating their worlds & histories is what made them feel so real to me and allowed me to connect so deeply to them. Anyone who didn’t actually read the books completely missed that part of why they were so addicting way beyond the whole love story & whatever.
Reminds me of the detail in the series Outlander (DEFINITELY recommend if you loved that)! It makes you see people of history as way more than just characters since they were just people like us living their lives. It allows us to see the reality in the tales from the past. :)
The one thing I'll have to say about that is that I wished we actually got to see more of that in the books, and didn't have to turn to a guide to find out about so much of the actually interesting lore.
I like Twilight but it's a pity that the focus is on Edward and Bella, when the other vampires have so much more interesting stories to explore.
I read one chapter of Twilight and burned the book... but learning about the side characters I wish she could’ve focused more on them than stupid Bella and her stupid antics
