I was born and raised in Roanoke and never knew this
We have an Almshouse Rd in Doylestown PA the county seat. Don’t know exactly where the old poor house was.
It used to be the Humanities building.
I grew up close by but have never heard of this. Such amazing history!!!

In England back in the day, poverty was a crime & you were sent to debtors prison if you couldn't pay your bills
In America you can still go to jail for owing money.
