Hi guys my name is Steve my wife Rachel and I have been in the Algarve for 13 years living off grid. I have to say we really love your approach to your channel and it’s content.
In these hot summers we have found the best way to cool the buildings and the areas around them to create walkways of the green shade cloth from building to building. The affect is to cool the hot breeze and firm a blanket of cold air around you living area. We wish you all the best and all the luck with your new home .
P.s we use the shade cloth and the cheap poles to form shade over our garden areas

Great idea and then eventually shaded walkways with vines and other climbers over them.

I remember living in the outback of Australia (Alice Springs) and the ground was so hot that my poor puppy couldn't even go outside for a walk without burning the pads of her paws. Appreciate your showing life as it is out there... it's very informative to have testimonies about the extreme heat and how folks get through it, especially for others considering making the move there.
Although the extreme heat is very uncomfortable for you all, you all are coping well, and on youtube you appear to be thriving in a way despite the intense heat. That you have shifted work to very early mornings and nights is win, and you're showing us much-colder-weather folk that it's possible to adapt.
I'd join the pets and be splayed on any cement or stone slab or tiles and i'd have my legs up on the cool wall, a slim frozen bottle of water under the crook of my neck 😄.

Heat as high as 117 degrees in the months of July August and September so I get what you’re having to get used too. It can be draining to the body. The only saving grace was I had ac all the time. @@FrankieOffGrid Yes we trying😁 we have this thing called load shedding, which cos we had floods in our region, we been spared for a few months but come August, they be back, it is to prevent complete failure of the electricity grid, we get cut off from all power for 4 to 6 hrs a day or night depends on the schedule, that's why Off Grid will not be a problem for us, altho we rather stay in a village, if we emigrate cos the idea of cutting those grounds like yours and others who have miles of lawn is a bit of a far stretch for us😂 But you both doing a sterling job with the upkeep of your Quinta.👏P.s. Heat is definitely exhausting but just go with the flow. Your soil looks so poor, it’s in need of a lot of organic matter. I’ve found adding composted cow manure the best for enriching sandy soils. Your size garden would need about 6-8 bags. Also your tomatoes could use a lot more water❤️✨

Hi like you we have been 44c in the shade of our back door.
I do not know if these will help, but they do me.
Take thin cotton scarves or tea towel and soak in cold water and wear round your neck.
When going to bed wear damp socks , and cut the toes out of an old pair of socks and wear them wet on your wrists.
Your pressure points keep cooler which helps.
In Victorian times lady’s had Cotten parasols which could be soaked in water, then when open the air around their heads kept cool.
You can do a similar way by wearing a damp cotton hat.
    Every little helps......

be careful with the socks because it's a good way to get fungus in your feet

    • @margaretmarsh4611
      @margaretmarsh4611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

When you work the land, it needs to be done in a full shoe to protect your feet .
In flip flops or open shoes means any fungal infections , insect stings or bits ,even a twisted ankle can occur just walking to the veg patch.
Bathing feet in water with tea tree oil is a help to eliminate a fungal infection and can help as an insect repellent as well.
Clean feet and socks at bedtime help, but the night time temperature here at the moment means your socks have dried quickly ,once you feel cooled you can remove them.

Hi. Get yourself some caftans: rayon or thin cotton is best. Bought some at a Moroccan market in Cape Town. That's what everyone wears in the really hot countries, like Central Africa and Middle East. Always wear a hat and cover your neck in the sun. We've been getting heat waves up to 50 degrees Celsius here. Those Caftans are cooler than being n@ked...they direct heat away from your skin. Good luck! You are doing great!

A tip about clothing in the heat of the summer; best if you wear woven clothing than knit, woven clothes do not stick too much to your body thus letting air flow! You can also get them wet before you wear them.

In those temps your body loses sweat without you even realising it - make sure you add some salt to your food to keep hydrated. I'd also suggest misting or splashing water around you inside the house or putting some wet towels around - as it evaportes, it will cool thing down a bit and help both you and the animals. You can also get them cooling mats on Amazon, or put some wet towels on the floor for them. I hope you keep getting enough solar to run the potable air con unit soon!🤞

It's a good idea to block the sun on the outside of the windows,, that will work even better.
When water evaporates it cools the surfaces it is evaporates from,, I was in an amusement park in the US, and everything you wanted to try, had 20-45min long queues in the backing California sun, but they had a water mist system,, that did wonders,, and it a really cheap way to cool,,,, us down :-)

There's an area in Spain, around Altiplano de Granada, where cave dwellings have been very popular in the past. You can find documentaries on TH-cam about some. I also like the cave living idea. As a rule of thumb naturally it's year round about 2-4 °C warmer than the year-averaged above-ground temperature. That can change with heat input from living activities over time, but it really does take decades. For example the subways in London are so hot now because the soil around the tunnels has heated up over decades due to insufficient ventilation.

we also bought a portable air conditioner that is filled with ice. But the problem is that the air gets too humid and that doesn't make sense in Thailand.....if the big air conditioner and all the fans don't work because of a power failure, i help myself with wet towels. the evaporative cooling helps

My heart goes out to you. I live in the MidAtlantic area of the United States on or East Coast. Temperatures get to the high levels 90s F your 35-37 degree range during our summers. I do not tolerate heat at all so I have to do my outside chores early in the morning and late in the evenings like you do. Thankfully, I can stay inside in air conditioning during the day so i understand your struggle. I could not live in Portugal or Italy or Spain or even Southern France. Take care your selves. I understand within the year free energy is coming world wide to all of us. It does not require wires to transmit. Research Tesla energy! That will solve your problem and air conditioning will be available to you then. The tea looked wonderful. Now I know why my green tea does not taste great. I was brewing it like the English brew their tea. Thanks for the information on that.

Well, I found it completely fascinating, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The newspapers etc are full of the problems Portugal and other countries are experiencing. I feel for you. I'm currently cycling in central France and have taken a tip from The Guardian newspaper - aim to do physical work between 4am an 7am, the coolest part of the day. Its working for me.
In days of yore ie pre-electricity people worked at night using 'the parish lantern ' - a bright moon. It is amazing what you can see once you're tuned in.
Stay cool, wet towels, sheets etc for you and the animals. Stay inside whenever possible

You should get some shades/blinds (estores in pt) to keep the sun from coming in, as well as the heat. We keep them closed all day and then open everything during the night, to let the cooler air in. It helps a lot

    • @djazt.8053

Pretty much the same strategy I use. In one particularly bad heatwave I even plotted a 24 h temperature curve to see when to close the shades. Turns out, in my location 5:45am was the time to catch the minimum temperature inside.
