I bought two HB Tube5 and upgraded one with a celestion eight 15 and another one with a Jensen C8R. I also changed the Chinese tubes for TAD ones. Now I can compare them with amps that cost ten times more. Superb stereo set for an incredible low price and they handle pedals very well too…
I upgraded my Monoprice with a WGS Reaper speaker, matched pair of Tung-Sol EL84 and 3 Gold Pin 12AX7 tubes along with a Belton 3 spring medium decay reverb tank. The Amp sounds great.
I have a gibson les paul with 57 classic humbuckers that usually makes every amp sing. Through the monoprice 15 amp with the stock 70/80 speaker this guitar is crazy boomy and fizzy and is unusable. It's unbelievable how bad the 70/80 sounds when driven with humbuckers (7:08) vs with the WGS speaker (7:27). Your review has encouraged me to give this amp one more try. Hoping that a speaker upgrade does the trick. Note that, I've found that with single coils the stock 70/80 sounds great.
Boomy humbuckers can be adjusted with a bit of experimentation and a good set of ears. If the amp and stock speaker sounds good with single coils, there really is no reason why it shouldn't sound good with humbuckers. I have NOTHING against the stock speaker. It is a good all-around driver. I have it in my Blackstar Artist 10 Anniversary Edition. Since I have the means, I put the 70/80 against very expensive speakers: Alnico Golds, Greenbacks, vintage Blackbacks, all of them great Celestion speakers and to my surprise that little 70/80 held it's ground, to the extent of me leaving it in the amp it came with. Do not judge anything in advance because it's cheap. Experiment.
I replaced the stock version with a Celestion Super 65 and also changed the spring reverb, I felt the effect is not loud enough somehow. Now I am totally happy with my amp.
I actually slightly prefered the Seventy 80 in this one. Both sound good tho. The stock one sound more modern to me. I’m not usually a massive seventy 80 fan, but here it sounds decent. The wgs sound a bit warmer and more vintage to me, but it seems to have a little less sparkle to it.
Thanks Budda for the inspiring review! Just upgraded my Tube15 with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback 8 ohm... the speaker has not even broken in yet and sounds phenomenal right away. Different than the default Seventy 80 for sure. Little less "Fendery" if that makes sense? The Creamback sounds really awesome to my ears.
I was thinking about trying out an Eminence GB128 in my Monoprice and I think this video convinced me to do it. The stock speaker certainly isn’t bad but definitely was more boxy compared to the WGS you had on video. That speaker produced some excellent tones.
The stock speaker sounds better with your pedals, otherwise the other speaker sounds better as its fuller and thicker. Ths issue is, the nonstock speaker sounds flubby with the pedals, but sounds better when overdriving the amp itself, while the thinness of the stock one works well to avoid that flubbiness. I hate distortion pedals and prefer amp overdrive so id opt for the nonstock speaker.
I’ve found at different times of course. A celestion vintage 30 & a green back on Craigslist I think I paid like $40-50 each. That’s a great way to to save money especially if you’re on a budget like everyone else is right now after the past couple of years. I think either one of these would make the amp sound better. Of course what sounds better is subjective.
what makes a stock Tube 15 sing is a powered mixer with effects like the Behringer XENYX 1202 FX powerful sound effects used one less cost than a new WGS upgraded 12 in. speaker and a lot more versatile with 100 built in effects killer reverb and delay
:) I have two as well, for just this reason, it was too good a price not to have a pair. Though as life got busy, one still sits in the box. Various 12" speakers hang around, so I think it will be interesting which will end up living in the second.
It’s not a huge difference but it made a difference. I’ve been using it for a year a weekly jam session I run as the guest’s amp and that has made a huge difference
Hey Budda! Thanks for your review. I am waiting for my TUBE 15 to arrive in a couple of weeks and am set on buying a WGS ET65 because of your review. Just wanted to ask if you've had any change of opinion now that you've had the amp for a little bit. I love my Tele but it sure is a bright guitar and I'm looking to tame the highs. THANKS!
I just purchased the Monoprice Stage Right 15. The speaker is still breaking in as I've played it for maybe 15 hours or so now. I have to tell you, the thing sounds really good. I also own a Fender Blues Jr. and it's got loads more gain on tap that the Jr. Chords, especially power chords, sound really good on the Stage Right, powerful and balanced. I have to say that overdriven power chords sound better than the Blues Jr, and my blues Junior has the Cannabis Rex speaker in it. That said, I think single notes and lead work sound better on the Blues Jr. The Stage Right has a certain thin and fizzy kind of character to the single notes. It's not unpleasant, it's just different. They sound a little less musical and a little more electronic if that makes any sense? Not as full sounding and mellow as notes on the Blues Jr. So, would the Stage Right benefit from a different speaker? The chords sound great. Maybe a different speaker would thicken up the notes a bit? I might try swapping the speakers between the two amps and see what happens. If I do that, I'll be sure to come back here and tell you what I think.
i have a Fender Pawn Shop Excelsior 11 watts with a crappy 15" speaker, which had no magnet to speak of. Very lightweight. I put an Eminence Legend 15. It had a heavy magnet which was perfect. It even has tremolo in the amp. So much better. It is my fav church gig amp.
I think you're better off with an external cabinet, the MDF used for this amp cabinet is really soft, it swallows speakers. A new plywood baffle would help a lot if you wanted to do a permanent combo swap. The mdf baffle is pretty bad
I put in a Celestion creamback G12H 75, Sovtek El84, V1 NOS mullard 12au7, V3 NOS Telefunken 12au7, V2 EH12ax7 now it sounds like an airplane, I still want to install a cold clipping switch for the V1 tube and another external speaker to pair with the creamback and mission accomplished. 😅
@@BuddaGuedes Ok, but that's only when viewed from the perspective of trade. I don't have another amplifier, the investment is in a sense in installments, I didn't pay for it all at once, and amplifier sounds genius in a sense and compared to the earlier amplifiers I had like Marshall JCM800 and Fender Hot Road Deluxe, HB with these parts it sounds much better for my needs, especially than the Delux which was made in the USA and at least four times more expensive. This amp especially with this Mullard NOS 12au7 sounds beautiful.
@@BuddaGuedes Speaking of maths, the situation was that I bought it new but it cost less - it cost half of this Creamback speaker less, and when I sold his 70/80, it came out to me at standard price but as if it came with a Creamback speaker. So it's not such a drastic investment. I would definitely change the tubes.
The HB stock one has the 70-80, like the monoprice ? I’m really curious to hear the sample after 30h. Like it so far, but this WGS seems to sound nuts… will I do the swap ? Thanks Budda for your great and pleasant content
I have a Stage Right 15 watt tube amp and wanted to ask a question: I run a patch from the line out jack on the back to an input in my recording setup. I also mic the speaker, which usually sounds better. But sometimes I want to play without the speaker blaring while I monitor the signal from that line out jack through headphones. The problem is, there's no way to switch off the amp's speaker (that I know of.) I've seen other amps that have the two speaker leads terminating in a quarter inch plug, which can be simply pulled from its jack on the amp. (Not sure if it's ok to operate such amps with this plug pulled out.) My Stage Right amp has the speaker leads hard-wired to the amp. But I could solder an inline switch into one of the speaker leads. MY QUESTION: would switching off the speaker and then operating the amp in this manner endanger it's electronics? If it is safe, would it be better to install the switch on the black or the red speaker lead? I realize that I'd probably be voiding any warrantee coverage, but I don't really put much stock in that anyway. I'm just interested in the opinion of anybody who has a better understanding of these matters than I do. Thanks.
Can you turn down the master volume, since you're just using it as a preamp anyway? Running it with the speaker disconnected could damage the output transformer, which is a costly repair
I've a new Weber classic alnico in an old 61 Princeton tremolo and it supposedly needs 20 to 100 for break in but actually already sounds good new so after break in will get smoother I hear a little harshness in your new one but is better Speaker's are usually where the budget brands cut cost I'm not a big fan of that amp though I like vintage amps Only new amp I have is a Gremlin head
hey Budda ! As a recent buyer of this amp thanks for this comparison. Do you have any experience with the Hempdog (by eminence) ? . If i wanted to gain more speaker headroom and distorted attack would you reckon it would fit the amp? Thanks!
Hi Budda, you have a great channel, thank you for the lots of videos! I also bought this little amp and put a Jensen C12N in it. Now it sounds more like a Fender 🙂 And I put a 12AT7 in V1. Now, I think the amp has less mids and the gain is a bit softer. It's amazing, which effect the cabinet has on the bass response, I had the Jensen in my Blues Deluxe before. It sounds like a weaker speaker now... Mostly I play clean. But when I crank the gain, it is sometimes too harsh in the high frequencies, like a treble boost when I pick hard. It's my first amp with EL84 tubes. Are they responsible for this effect, although I don't get any power amp distortion out of them, when I crank the volume to max (gain on 2)? Or should I also change V2 and/ or V3? Thank you very much, greetings Sven!
@@BuddaGuedes I always crank the amp and utilize the volume on the guitar which works well with pedals, it is all signal chain and tones are infinite in small incriments and that is why I am always having fun searching for that perfect tone that other people don't hear the same way I do LOL!! maybe a little selfish on my part but rock and roll is selfish and rebellious at it's core and one more question, who called it "Rock And Roll" who dimed that term? some snot-nosed kid wearing Kids red dots or Beethoven? LOL!!
Big difference in sound, yes; but I don't like that replacement speaker. THAT one sounds boxy to me--weak lows and hardly any highs. I think you're on to something with the Tube15 benefitting from a different speaker... makes for a great value. It just comes down to personal taste in speaker choices. Also, those 70/80s have to be broken in... A lot of people like those; but you need to stick them in a cupboard running a looper pedal for a solid week to break them in! haha
@@BuddaGuedes I have a bugera v22 infinitum I'm very happy with actually it has a a turbosound speaker sound excellent to me...wondering if swapping speaker would be worth it..
This amp has controls for bass, mids, treble and 'tone'. There's a good chance you could have made the Celestion amp sound like the WGS amp by turning some knobs. Try it and let us know.
just a tip .. when talking about this or that speaker . ..... my left , your right . but left is right ,. right . ? so right is left but my left not your left ... right .? ... HHUUHH ? Jost POINT... and say THIS ONE ... !!!! no confusion. , no explanation or extra confusion added . ... and I'm still wondering about how this works clean .. does it do clean without breaking up at all .?
good for "home use" ... what do you mean ... home like a mansion? or apartment type ?! eheheeh right now i have a vox AC10 ... and its too much for "apartment mode" eheheh and i'm planing getting something more "home use" friendly .... Keep on Rockin
Clean it can be played no problem, especially at 1w.. But to achieve tube overdrive, it's way too loud for comfort.. I have a house and it's just impossible without ear protection, even at 1w mode.. Thats why pedals exist
@@BuddaGuedes in fact my first tube amp is on his way😇so i am not really an expert. i am a late beginner 51 y o. i am sure that there will be a difference from my modeling amp i have now. or at least i hope.
@@BuddaGuedes well.... YESSS! blown away. the sound is so much clear, i hear my ibanez rx 750 for real for the first time, it sounds like pro sound, but one thing i really discovering: dynamics! never experienced before with modeling amp. i have to pay much more attention now and more over, i hear mistakes better, need to pay more attention to details. i didn' t expect so much difference, i am amazed.
@@BuddaGuedes It seems so many people swap tubes, adjust bias, and/or change the speaker on these amps. I can understand why.. They are relatively cheap, sound nice, are easily available (and look pretty good too). I think the WGS is a great choice. I prefer the sound and it is worth the money. Nice job.
I have the Monoprice version of this amp. The stock speaker is garbage, its honestly one of the worst sounding speakers ive ever heard and ive heard some shitty sounding speakers with name brands on them. But Celestion should be taken out back and shot for building a POS like this. This 70/80 goes for $90+!. I put a Electro-Harmonix 12TS8 30W into this amp and HOLY SHIT. You can get this speaker for $35 shipped and it blows the Celestion away. The EHX is made by Eminence. I also have tried Jensen C12K, C12N, Carvin British Series and i ran it thru my 2x12 that has JBL e-120s. I usually dont buy cheaper gear, but i found this amp, the Bugera T5 and the Monoprice 5watt combo for sale for a total of $325. I did some work to all of them in one way or another. The Bugera T5 sounded blah with the Bugera stock tubes, put 6p14p-k in it with a 6n2p preamp tube and it was a completely different amp. If you have tried the T5 and didnt like it, try it with some good tubes and wow. I also added 150pf caps to the Tone and Vol pots inner two lugs to brighten up the amp. The 5watt Monoprice I put GE 6v6 NOS, RCA 12ax7. I took the 100uf/450v cap out and replaced it with a 22uf/450v. But this made the stock speaker another Celestion (Super 8) fart with all the extra bass the cap change created. This amp is very very bassless stock. I put in a Celestion 8 15, this speaker I really like. So in the end i spent $400 to have 3 great sounding amps that i dont have to worry about like my expensive gear. These 3 amps blow me away. Other things i did to my Monoprice Stage Right 15: V1 Reflektor 6n2p-eb V2 Reflektor 6n2p-ev V3 RCA 12at7 P1 Reflektor 6p14p-eb P2 Reflektor 6p14p-eb Installed Mod 3 spring reverb. Replaced RCA cables for reverb to quality ones. As of now im happy with this amp, but i cant express how bad this stock speaker is. This tone knob on this amp is like what Vox uses on their amps called a Tone Cut. Make sure when you get the amp to tighten all the screws. Something that people complain about is rattle and noises brought on from the tube retainers. I took those off and installed tube shields, this took all of 5 mins to do. Thanks for the video :-)
I like amps that dont need tube replacements and speaker swaps right out of the box. Some of you just have money to burn and jimi hendrix living in your head. This amp didnt impress me at all. Returned it.
That’s just a matter of taste. I actually like the amp even with the stock speaker. But it gets better with a better speaker. And it’s still cheaper than a blues Junior. So less money spent. That’s exactly the opposite of what you claim

@@BuddaGuedes Thank you
🙏🙏
Can you put an 8 ohm speaker in this? I thought the stock speaker s 16 ohms.
It’s 8ohms
@@BuddaGuedes Thank you. I've scoured the internet and couldn't find an answer to that.
You’re welcome
Are they responsible for this effect,
although I don't get any power amp distortion out of them, when I crank the volume to max (gain on 2)?
Or should I also change V2 and/ or V3?
Thank you very much, greetings Sven!
Cranking the volume will always get you more drive from the power tubes
@@BuddaGuedes I always crank the amp and utilize the volume on the guitar which works well with pedals, it is all signal chain and tones are infinite in small incriments and that is why I am always having fun searching for that perfect tone that other people don't hear the same way I do LOL!! maybe a little selfish on my part but rock and roll is selfish and rebellious at it's core and one more question, who called it "Rock And Roll" who dimed that term? some snot-nosed kid wearing Kids red dots or Beethoven? LOL!!
I always feel I’m the first person I need to please with my playing.
WGS definitely sounds better. But as you say: stock speaker is not bad ✌️
And wearing it out is making it sound even better
Big difference in sound, yes; but I don't like that replacement speaker. THAT one sounds boxy to me--weak lows and hardly any highs. I think you're on to something with the Tube15 benefitting from a different speaker... makes for a great value. It just comes down to personal taste in speaker choices.
Also, those 70/80s have to be broken in... A lot of people like those; but you need to stick them in a cupboard running a looper pedal for a solid week to break them in! haha
I actually use the stock one a lot and it’s sounding better and better everyday
Agreed. Replacement sounded like it was under a blanket. 70/80 was more 3d
wgs...for sure!
Me too
@@BuddaGuedes I have a bugera v22 infinitum I'm very happy with actually it has a a turbosound speaker sound excellent to me...wondering if swapping speaker would be worth it..
If you like the speaker keep it
@@BuddaGuedes I agree ..thanks!
🤟🏻🤟🏻
Julgo serem JJ
Ah! E muito obrigado
70/80 suits this amp better.
🤘🏻
This amp has controls for bass, mids, treble and 'tone'. There's a good chance you could have made the Celestion amp sound like the WGS amp by turning some knobs. Try it and let us know.
You can’t. You can only adjust some frequencies and not all. Than it’s also a
Matter of compression, distortion feel etc!!!
just a tip .. when talking about this or that speaker . ..... my left , your right . but left is right ,. right . ? so right is left but my left not your left ... right .? ... HHUUHH ? Jost POINT... and say THIS ONE ... !!!! no confusion. , no explanation or extra confusion added . ... and I'm still wondering about how this works clean .. does it do clean without breaking up at all .?
It’s not a very clean amp
Great video mate but don't try poker for a living😄 the happy face was a big tell!
Ehh Eh!
I caught that also!!!
Eh! Eh!
good for "home use" ... what do you mean ... home like a mansion? or apartment type ?! eheheeh
right now i have a vox AC10 ... and its too much for "apartment mode" eheheh
and i'm planing getting something more "home use" friendly ....
Keep on Rockin
This amp can play at 1 watt so that’s great for quiet volumes
Clean it can be played no problem, especially at 1w.. But to achieve tube overdrive, it's way too loud for comfort.. I have a house and it's just impossible without ear protection, even at 1w mode.. Thats why pedals exist
😁😁😁
Sorry, but I like the stock speaker. It is brighter with more definition.
👌
you are in a room with one and sounds great. then you cheange and it sounds great. then if you have 2 you hear differences. that is all it is
It’s partially right, but after a while you know how an amp should sound to your taste
@@BuddaGuedes in fact my first tube amp is on his way😇so i am not really an expert. i am a late beginner 51 y o. i am sure that there will be a difference from my modeling amp i have now. or at least i hope.
There will be a huge difference!! Let me know when you get it
@@BuddaGuedes well.... YESSS! blown away. the sound is so much clear, i hear my ibanez rx 750 for real for the first time, it sounds like pro sound, but one thing i really discovering: dynamics! never experienced before with modeling amp. i have to pay much more attention now and more over, i hear mistakes better, need to pay more attention to details. i didn' t expect so much difference, i am amazed.
I want to buy the amp, cause everybody say its good.
It’s a cool very inexpensive amp
I've seen so many of these HB 'monoprice' videos I'm starting to think that people who have these simply have a stock cabinet...
What do you mean?
@@BuddaGuedes
It seems so many people swap tubes, adjust bias, and/or change the speaker on these amps.
Other things i did to my Monoprice Stage Right 15:
V1 Reflektor 6n2p-eb
V2 Reflektor 6n2p-ev
V3 RCA 12at7
P1 Reflektor 6p14p-eb
P2 Reflektor 6p14p-eb
Installed Mod 3 spring reverb.
Hi, is beautiful your channel. Where are you from.. I come from Italy... 🇮🇹
Thanks a lot. I’m from Portugal
I never understand the 70/80, it either sounds thin or deep & muddy.
It’s a strange speaker but it’s getting better with time
Anyway... this amp sounds better with singlecoils.....
🤘🏻
We are supposed to know what the stock speaker actually is are we ?
The stock speaker is a Celestino seventy eighty
Wtf i thought buddha was playing nirvana
One of my favorite bands ever
I like amps that dont need tube replacements and speaker swaps right out of the box. Some of you just have money to burn and jimi hendrix living in your head. This amp didnt impress me at all. Returned it.
That’s just a matter of taste. I actually like the amp even with the stock speaker. But it gets better with a better speaker. And it’s still cheaper than a blues Junior. So less money spent. That’s exactly the opposite of what you claim
Salty...cheer up bro.
Harley Benton? Hardly Bothered.
Have you listen to it?
waaaaaay too much talking!!! Just A/B the speakers and let that do the talking
