      Thank you! I have a few videos where I talk about the soil mix I use on various trees. Depending on the variety, I will try to get a mix that gives me a PH level that is required for that particular tree. I don’t have specific videos for each tree, but I do have a few where I talk about the soil mixes in general terms. You can search my channel for videos titled “Lychee 1st fruit set (AKA: Litchi or Lichi)” and “Hass Avocado Tree getting ready to flower”. There is also one titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower” which has a bit more detailed information. I hope this helps and thank you for watching.

    Are you worried about the meyer lemon and other trees in small containers becoming root bound? Do you ever root prune them?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, especially the Meyer Lemon that is in a 22” round plastic container. It has been in that container for about 7 yrs. Although it is doing well (currently has a very heavy set of blooms) I do need to transplant to a larger container. All of my trees that are in round plastic containers, and grow bags, will eventually be up potted. The ones that are in the large wooden containers I’m not too worried about. I’ve had some of those in the same container for about 5 years and they have done well. Thank you for visiting!

      @@Zone10aBackyardOrchard Thank you! I have experimented with livestock watering tanks made of galvanized metal. The outside stays perfect but the inside contacted with soil rusts something awful. I don't know if lining it would make a difference since it might also draw condensation between the plastic or not. I won't do that again. It looks good but nope. But I do like the look of your containers.

      @@siarlbychan I’ve never tried the galvanize container’s. Thanks for sharing that info. Some of the containers in this video will be going on 4 yrs in a few more months, no issues so far. I am planning on building another one sometime next year. I’m going to coat the inside bottom and sides with epoxy resin. They have food grade resins so there should be no issues with any chemicals contaminating the soil. The plastic lining has worked fine, but I think the resin will extend the container life considerably.

    Another 10a neighbor! Can't grow grapes, have dogs who may try to enjoy them, need to try pineapple guavas; have passion flower vines, four beautiful mango trees, two bananas, two orange, lime, pink grapefruit, four pomegranates, a moringa tree, black everbearing mulberry, and one Wurz avocado. I put the trees into the ground surrounding a house on a quarter acre. A dozen southern highbush blueberries in three varieties in six five gallon containers planted in miracle gro have been covered in rust since I bought them. I feed mine fruit trees in pots, with seaweed solution every time I water.

I don’t have enough space in my backyard to plant all my trees so I had to grow some in containers. At first I was worried I wouldn’t get good fruit production, but they have done well. First time looking at your channel.
    What kind of fertilizer do you use? How often do you put it. And also what is the schedule for the water? Do you use automatic irrigation?
    I have a few trees in containers and I’m struggling with them. They are not growing.

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Welcome! I only use organic fertilizers. On the 1st seasons application, I use - Dr. Earth Flower Girl Premium Bud & Bloom Booster 3-9-4. After that, I will fertilize with other organic fertilizers with various N-P-K ratios that depend on the different variety of fruit trees. Generally, I fertilize at minimum of about 3 to 4 times during the growing season. With watering, potted trees with good draining soil need to be watered more often than those planted in the ground. As to how often and how much, that is a tough one to answer. A good practice is to push your finger through the surface soil about an inch or two. If it’s dry it is time to water. After doing that a few times you will be able to come up with a schedule to follow. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

I have since amended the soil so the mix is now Cactus soil mix, perlite, organic soil mix, peat moss and worm castings. The mixing ratio is about 2 parts cactus soil mix to 1 part of the rest. As for the fertilizer, I fertilize 3 times a year with a 4-5-4 organic fertilizer. I also give most of my container grown trees a top soil dressing once a year. Most of my trees are on regular root stock. I do have a few citrus trees that are on semi dwarf root stock. My Ice cream bean tree is on regular stock. I grew mine in a container for a little less than a year and it did well. I should mention that these trees are fast growing. I’ve had to prune mine several times since planting in the ground. Due to the fact that it is fast growing it would be best to plant it in the ground. If that’s not an option you might consider a large container. My Pakistan mulberry is also a fast growing tree and I’ve had mine in containers for over 4 years. It’s done really well and produces good sized crops. Best of luck and thank you for visiting!

      I bought it nearly 5 years ago. I had a difficult time finding this variety. I finally found one at a nearby nursery, but they only had mature trees. It was about 9 ft tall and came in a 45/50 gal container. Way bigger than what I wanted. I prefer to buy in the 5 - 10 gal range because they are easier to plant and are more affordable. I am having a lot of problems growing in containers. What is the soil mix that you use and how do you maintain and fertilize? Beautiful plants by the way.

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used several different soil mixes over the years, but generally they are all similar with only slight variations. Mostly I use cactus soil mix, peat moss, organic soil mix, worm castings, perlite and a few trace elements. I previously posted a couple of videos titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower” and another titled "Repotting my fruit tree" please search my channel. In those videos I talk more about the soil mix.
      For fertilizer it depends on the type of tree, but generally I use liquid or granular organic fertilizers. And I only fertilize during the growing season (3 to 4 times). Some trees that are sensitive to fertilizer, like my mulberry, I only use liquid fertilizer like kelp and seaweed in small amounts once a year.
      It’s difficult to say what is the best soil mix or fertilizer schedule since not all trees are alike. Some require specific needs while others thrive regardless. I hope the above info serves as a good guide. Also, most fruit trees do not do well when they are water logged. Be sure to check soil moisture level before watering. When I started container growing fruit trees that was one of the biggest problems I had (over watering). Now I use good draining soil and only water when top inch or 2 of the top soil is dry.
      Thanks for visiting!

      Yes. All of the wooden planters you see in my video I built myself. They are not too complicated, just very time consuming. The hardest part is figuring the angle cuts to create the tapered appearance (which is 4 degrees). The length of the top boards I started at about 2’ then reduced as I worked my way down. I have a miter saw which helped get precise angles and cuts, but it would be possible to make those cuts with a simple handsaw, so no real specialized tools are needed.

    Hello, how do you make sure the soil does not sink over the years in the very big containers?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, over time the soil level will drop if left alone. What I do to avoid this is I add a top soil dressing after the first year of being transplanted. After that I repeat the process about every 2-3 years. By doing so it replenishes the soil with added nutrients and keeps the soil level from dropping. If you haven’t done so, please check one of my previously uploaded videos titled “My 1st harvest off a Mexicola Avocado tree growing in a container.” In that video I talk about how I make and apply my top soil dressing. At some point in the future I will likely make a video with more detail on this subject. Thank you for watching!

    How often do you water your containers? I have two trees in 15 gallon containers now. I water them twice a week. I always wonder if that is too little or?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are several variables to consider such as type of tree (deciduous, evergreen, drought tolerant, etc.) climate and type of soil just to name a few. I’ve found that the best way to gauge the watering needs is to physically check it. I’ll stick my finger into the soil about an inch and a half or 2. I’ll water if it’s dry at that depth. Once you’ve done that a few months you will have a better idea when to water. With my container trees I usually water once a week during cooler months then increase to about twice a week during the hotter months (we don’t get too many of those in my area). Thanks for watching!

      Thank you! I would wait until the tree is dormant before transplanting and I would go to about a 10 or 11 inch container. When growing in a container it’s best to only go up 1 or 2 sized pots each time you transplant. As for the type of soil, please search my channel for a video titled “Lang and Li Jujube trees (AKA: Chinese Date) growing in containers and are starting to flower.” I talk about how I transplanted them.

I live in a low chill area (about 100 to 200 chill hours) so when I buy deciduous fruit trees I have to buy low chill trees.
