Hard to tame, but definitely not too bad. It's all about to fit your gear and style. One degree plus or less in the tone knob you won't find the sweet spot. I use it a lot and I had a lot of love and hate in all these 19 years, :), some of my best and worse tones. But the DS-1 wasn't the actual reason after all, but damaged speakers, replaced by inadequate speakers, damaged amps, junk gears, junk pickups, junk guitars. Now everything is ok. It isn't just about de DS-1 but about any gear: you must know what is it made for.
Tips for DS-1...roll the tone back.... increase the level and the gain to taste...but roll the tone knob back.
Or turn the tone all the way up and EMBRACE THE CHAINSAW! Entombed used a Ds-1 on wolverine blues

If it's good enough for Steve Vai, it should be good enough for everyone else.
And, Steve Vai doesn't have to compromise with 'good enough'.. he can use whatever he wants.

Tips for DS-1...roll the tone back...then unplug it and throw it out the window. Your tone will improve significantly.

A bit late to replay but its an E major 7 chord with the 9 on top (an F#). He's playing the low open E which is probably why it sounds so warm.

@heavyrelic8506 I hate batteries in pedals, eventually, they can leak and mess up the inside of the pedal. Same thing happened to my GameBoy, RIP.
