When talking about diesel engines, you've gotta give the lb-ft TORQUE! These trucks use high torque to carry these big loads, not horsepower. Drives us, already neurotic, mechanical engineers nuts!
It is the engines capability to produce “work” that carries big loads. The amount of work an engine is capable of is measured in kW or bhp. A high torque rating over a wide band of engine speed is nice to have, but in the end you can get around low torque with low gearing. You can’t use gearing to get around a low power rating (kW/bhp). I’m not sure you are a mechanical engineer...
@@AndreasBrOlesen Wow way to overanalyze one sentence. You realize this is TH-cam, not an ASME forum. He's talking about big diesel engines and only quoting horsepower rating, not torque. Since torque output is much higher than HP in diesel engines. I just wanted to know the torque rating of the engines. I wasn't writing a thesis on the topic! Why are you suddenly bringing up gearing like nobody knows how the powertrain works. And yes, I am a mechanical engineer and you sound like some freshman in college lvl knowledge who just passed thermo and thinks they're the smartest person in the world. I took a break from actual engineering work to get on TH-cam to find your pompous self.
@@J_McPhearsom Wow relax dude. You simple made an incorrect statement in your original comment "trucks use high torque to carry big loads". Then you state that it drives you mechanical engineers nuts, but why would it when the statement is wrong. To have an engine do work, yes you need torque if you want the work to be done at idle engine speeds, you need a lots of torque! but it is still the engines power rating that dictates how much work the engine is capable of producing. If you really want to analyse the engines power characteristics, you really need a complete power and torque curve anyway. Theres a reason why the power rating of a truck/tractor is often part of the model name, not the torque rating.
@@AndreasBrOlesen I was generalizing that the high torque generated by the engine (yes at low rpm) is responsible for the work (ft-lb) needed to move such heavy vehicles and loads. I refrained from specific terms like 'work' since my assumption is most ppl aren't engineers. What peaked my interest are these large diesel engines, optimized for these applications and duty cycles. And yes if I really wanted to know, best to look the HP, TQ curves. To me, the narrator seems to be mentioning these mechanical specs without understanding.

the last one was a total beast i think . All the rest had small capacity but that MAN monster beats them all with ease .
MAN is a monster
last (MAN) track I love it
Great video thanks! Would love to drive them all!
Definitely last 2 being a caterpillar mechanic I'd take the cat of course and use it for RV Exploring GREAT VIDEO 👍

I agree, Slovaks could never produce it without Tatra base.

Wrong, Tatra is totally Slovac made..
Yes, now TATRA is czech producer, but with the developing of these trucks helped many Slovaks too. It was czechoslovak brand in the past.

Wow..... Ashok Leyland......
The Iviko curser engine is a great choice, for my enemy. They are refered to as accursed engines.
Not so sure, my dad did 900.000km with it in Stralis 430. On the other hand that MAN's V8 is said to have terrible reliability.
I like that the Americans painted a dump truck brown, gave it some tires and now its a "tactical" vehicle.
