Time: 4-5 hours
Cost: $1000 and up
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Building a Swing Set:
Measuring tape
Speed square
Drill driver
Hammer
Flathead screwdriver
Wrench set
Shopping List:
DIY Play Set kit
Play set kit accessories
Lumber for swing set frame
4” screws
Steps:
1. Measure and mark the locations of the holes for all the swing set accessories across the top beam of swing set.
2. Drill holes all the way through the beam on the marks. It’s important to keep the holes straight, so use a speed square to guide the drill bit.
3. Flip the beam over and insert the T-nuts that come with the play set kit with a hammer.
4. Insert the washers over the brackets for the swings and thread those through the holes into the T-nuts. These also come with the kit. Eventually, you won’t be able to hand tighten anymore, but you can use a screwdriver in the hole of the bracket as leverage to get it the rest of the way down. Be sure to keep the orientation of the hole perpendicular to the beam.
5. Drill the washers into the beam using the drill driver and the provided screws.
6. Assemble the A-frames of the playset using 4x4 lumber. Secure the frame together with 4” screws.
7. Once the frames are assembled, screw the provided brackets to the tops of the A-frames to hold the top beam.
8. Measure, cut, and assemble a platform for the slide. Leave gaps between the boards to allow for rainwater to slide through.
9. Screw the slide platform into two of the A-frames using the four inch screws.
10. Attach the A-frames to the top beam using carriage bolts and nuts that come with the kit.
11. Once the frame is completely assembled, carefully tilt it right-side-up into position.
12. Screw some additional 2x4s to the A-frame on the inside of the slide platform to act as railings.
13. Screw the slide to the platform. To keep the slide from pushing forward, you can add some additional stakes into the ground underneath the bottom of the slide and secure the slide to those stakes.
14. Screw more 2x4s to the A-frame to make a ladder for the platform, or screw them closer together and attach rock climbing grabs in select locations.
Resources:
Tom installed the Do-It-Yourself Pioneer Custom Play Set, which is manufactured by Swing-N-Slide (www.swing-n-sl.... It comes with a basic set of swing set parts and then you can order additional parts to customize it to your needs.
The lumber Tom used to assemble the swing set was Western Red Cedar.
All the other tools and materials used for this project, including the drill driver, screws, and speed square can all be found at home centers.
Expert assistance with this project was provided by the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (www.realcedar....) and Nathan Gilbert Carpentry.

I've been watching Tom and the guys build projects on tv since I was about Charlie's age. Thanks for the great content.
Me too growing up I always loved watching norm build sweet furniture
Me too my grandpa always had this on the tv
Same
@@ruthlesskumquat2918 Right, This Old House was on KETC channel 9 in St. Louis Missouri when I started watching the show in the early 1980s. Silva Bros. Construction.
same, this is heartwarming.
Tommy LOVES doing this for a little kid. That’s some legit enjoyment there.
This is super cute, you can see how happy Tom is with the little boy, so wholesome.
What a sweet kid. He earned that swing in an instant.
Im looking to buy or build my own playset for my daughter. Seeing that lil boy smile was priceless! I cant wait to see my daughter's reaction when i get one set up for her!
Tommy, and all the other guys on TOH, are not only great craftsmen but men of character and compassion.
This was epic!
We bought a kit from Walmart that's similar but also includes a covered loft that was on sale for about $350. It took almost a whole day to assemble but it's sturdy and the girls still love playing on it years later.
Well done!
this brought a tear drop to my eye
Man son would love that
Lovely day to build a swing set!
Tom is the GOAT
If by goat you mean hack? I agree..
Speed square for straight drilling. I know nothing. Thanks Tom Silva!
It’d be funny if tommy had to babysit while the couple built the swing
You can tell Tommy has grandkids.
He does, I went to school with them
Connor G lol
maybe great grandkids at this point haha
Personally, I think Tom had more fun watching the kid enjoy his new swing set. As long as I've watched This Old House, Tom and Richard has a soft spot for kids.
Kids smile well worth all that work !😀
anyone who downvoted it, clearly didnt watch the final seconds.
Yes.
Yea Kevin’s face just seals the deal 😭
Can you guys build an adult swing set? Kids never use theirs and they're always too small for adults. If I had a swing set my size, I would use it!
Withered Perception Hahahaha
I once saw one (and used it as a kid) that was super tall and made from telephone poles. That count?
Also see the sport of Kiiking... professional 360 swinging.
Withered Perception haha YES, a adult swing set! Last time I tried a child swing set, I broken the dam swing ;-;
@@kamilkuzmicki1687 Nothing better than a swing snap followed by involuntary ass to ground contact!😂
Calmate
happy to see you guys didn't try to white wash the swing set . good job
How exactly does one "whitewash" a swingset?
You mean skip steps? They certainly did
It looks like Chahlee likes it!
Woohoo!!!!! 1 million Subscribers!!!!
Top tip: Always best keeping the swingset as far away from your own house and as close to the neighbours as much as possible.
bother thee and not me!
Pro tip!
Why? Can you please explain? Thanks.
Building is the only option as these companies want 5k for a playground...
Yup. I'm watching this video because I was informed that "your son needs a swingset"..... then I checked prices. $4,000 for a playset, are you insane? I'm going to DIY as much of it as I can.
Look on Craigslist and FB Marketplace. People sell them dirt cheap and even give them away after their kids outgrow them. I have a $5k set and paid $200. It's perfect.
I enjoyed this episode, thanks for doing this
Fun fact: The Home Depot mascot was modeled after a young Tom Silva.
Did you mount the swing loops turned 90 degrees so the bushings slide rather than rotate? If so, they're probably worn out by now.
I understand using the screws for tensile resistance, but it seems odd to use screws to resist shear to hold up the platform. I'd want something that'll hold Charlie as a rowdy teenager... and 3 of his friends. So, bolts or at least nails.
Structural 1/4 inch screws were used. These, in the correct orientation and amount effectively replace the need to use carriage bolts.
Any idea how much the wood costs for this kit
Jim: Come over
Tommy: I can't, I'm not in Colorado
Jim: I need help building a swingset
Tommy: 8:14
I want a swing set for me.
Love it! Thank you :)♡♡♡
I’m adding an old a-frame playset with 5’8” deck height to a new playhouse style playset with 6D’ deck height using a bridge or crawl tunnel. How can I raise the old a-frame deck 4”? Risers? Set it on top of 4x4s and secure ? Or do I just try to do a clatter bridge to connect the sets so that it’s flexible enough to attach to slightly different deck heights? Help!
I got Toms point about building a swing set,&no offense to Tom he did the job the old school way.(LOL) I don't know about every company, but the wood comes with the swing set,& you don't have to drill the holes cause the holes come predrilled.I used to work for the swing set company thats in the video. When a investment company bought us they screwed over the employees.5 or so years later The company bought a similar company like ours&moved the company from Wisconsin to Georgia.
Beautiful
Great project, I would like to buy this kit for my grandson, where can I buy it? Thanks.
The home center
Great Man
Charley approved.
😎
How long is the top beam?
You know what this swing set needs? Rocket boosters. Shoot that kid 300 ft in the air in a 1/4 of a second. Parachute back down. He'll be the envy of all the other kids.
Hi, Can i do the same project as a basement playground?
I wish I knew he was here to visit him
Did anyone else notice at 3:20 that he left the swing swivel 90 degrees off?
How can I get you to come to Washington to build ours
Awesome
I wish I would have used real wood to build. The kits are all junk small wood and would be nice to enjoy it with the kids.
2:00 Drive it home with a hammer
Ohh yeah
Mint
Thank you Tommy! Lol
Which cordless drill do you guys use .
I'm not the guys, but it was a Festool.
@@markmoroe6902 thanks bro i have to buy one of these.
@@AliKhan-yj1ws A bit late, but keep in mind they only used the drill to make the holes. The used an impact driver to put the screws in.
@@RageDaug appreciated bro bought cordless imapct drivers. But they are Hilti
Can you please build one for me
What backyard swing set can you buy for under $100????
That was just the hardware kit. The wood and slide cost extra.
It’s just the swing lol
“Under $100”?!?
…oh, this video was 5 years ago 😭
He loves to bounce.
Woodglut is a good solution for every woodworker.
Just don't let him slide down the slide with polyester pants on!
how to whitwash a playset
Haha
Whitewash meaning making it bougie?
How to build a prebuilt swing set? You mean assemble. Assemble. Or call it "How To Follow Basic Instructions."
why isn't it anchored to the ground? at least pound in some stakes and bolt the frame to them
Nate Walkner that base is wide enough there’s no way it’s going anywhere
@@mattsnyder4754 better to overengineer than to pay for the emergency room when 2 swinging kids flip it
Because they are gonna anchor and level it on their own if you paid attention
@@DXSUCKIT1990 burying the back legs 2 inches into the ground isn't anchoring anything
It's very sturdy and the base is wide enough. Charlie is a toddler no more than 30/40 pounds. It would take a couple large adult men to flip it.
Step one: find anyone on the planet besides Tom Silva.
First
Firts
Farts
Jesus what neighborhood is this? No privacy. That fence is a joke.... someone on the second floor can peep at you in the yard.
Other than that. Great video.
This is assembling, not building IMO
if you cut the wood it's building
Also, they didn't quite follow directions... I'm pretty sure that rock wall wasn't part of the instruction manual.
They had to buy the wood separately so building
awww
I always feel so inspired to go build something after watching these, great work guys 👍
Seeing the joy on that kids face was inspiring.
I built a swing set today, got the inspiration from this video. It’s really not that hard! Final cost was about $800 but it’s strong enough to hang a car off of. One thing I’d recommend that I got off Amazon is the feet. They have a stake that drives into the ground and the 4x4 sits on a 6x6 rubber pad. I weight 300 lbs and I swung hard and even jumped and mine didn’t rock or wobble at all. 4x6 for top beam is a must.
I remember a lifetime ago, my then wife showed up at the house with a kit with the brackets. I then had to go buy the lumber and build it. It was one of my first serious DIY projects. It lasted for years until after we got divorced and the kids were too old and then she tore it down
Haha. Yep Toms definitely a grampa
How do you stop a swing set from squeaking? It is a metal A-Frame with chains attached for the swing. I oiled it and still squeaks like crazy.
Charlie loves loves his new swingset
Those are the chanciest cheapest looking swing Hangers I have ever seen in my life must be a yankee thing....
How big was that playgroup set? We want to install one in our house but our yard is small
That ending made my day
Do looking after employees ?
Only $100?
grandpa tommy
So I was wondering i know they use 4×4s as the legs, but didn't they also use 4×6s ?
Interesting how they always say what city they're in, but not in this one, just Colorado.
That was a regular 'five' not a 'high five'. Otherwise all good :)
What brand of impact driver are they using?
Festool.
Wouldn't that sink over time?
Yes, Charlie’s chunky but would sink that set
That's a nice back yahd !
Just don't pahhk your cahhh bahk there.
No its not. They have atleast 3 neighbors staring down into their yard. That neighborhood looks awful with all those houses on top of each other like that. No privacy at all.
That's amazing!
If you can't build a swing set you are not a f****** man
Tommy is the MAN!
