    Shooting Star (Solo) - by Bad Company
    Shooting Star is a song by the English supergroup Bad Company from the album Straight Shooter. The album was released in April 2, 1975, a month after the release of the single "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" and four months before the album's second single "Feel Like Makin' Love.”
    The album reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. It was certified gold (500,000 units sold) by the Recording Industry Association of America a month after its release. The album was remastered and re-released in 1994.
    Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke stated on In the Studio (which devoted an episode to Straight Shooter) that the track "Shooting Star" (which they did not write) was lyrically inspired by the drug and alcohol-related deaths of Paul Kossoff, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison.

    Nice work here Mark. One of the great bands I never got around to seeing live ( in their prime )
    We were truly fortunate to have so many great Rock Bands around the World form the 60's to Late 70's.

    Mark . You are a legend !! Went for a drive today and put on this long time BC favourite of mine . This solo has real feeling to it .. Have never been able to find a note for note solo breakdown in the past but gave it one more try today -then find you! Well explained, step by step, relaxed style. Thanks mate. From Australia !!

    Another big thank you from the Land Down Under..Have never been able to work out this solo..It goes in one ear and out the other eh eh..But when I see it played and calmly explained like you do I can learn it with plenty of practice..Having been out of the music scene for 20 years..and before that putting up with different band members..I now do solo gigs using midi files and it's such a "complete and together feeling" knowing I'm not putting up with sit-in unrehearsed band guys who just turn up for the money..Thanks to you Mark I can now include this all time favorite at my gigs..

      Thanks for the cool story. Totally made my day! I know what you mean about bands. I haven't been in one for 12 or 13 years now. I miss it, but not the bickering and fooling around and dealing with situations when one guy is late or doesn't show. Glad I could help. That's what it's all about!

    Mark, I would have thought you were a Bad Company Fan... They are awesome... Paul Rodgers has been touted as the best Rock-n-roll, and blues singer ever.... It is funny, I was listening to Jango radio on the internet the other day, and Shooting Star came on... I thought to myself, not many people cover Bad Company lessons period.... Then boom, here you go... Very cool jam, and you spelled it out very well... Those are unique rhythm riffs, and I will wait for you to show us later as you said... Thank you, Sir for the video....

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I don't know why I wasn't a real fan. Probably because my cousin and brother didn't introduce them to me. But this time I just took note, "Why do I never turn the dial when Bad Co. comes on?" and I decided, "Because THEY'RE GOOD - get it through your thick skull Mark!!" :)
      Glad you liked the video. I'll do more for sure!

    Hi, thanks so much for this, very easy to follow laid back vibe lesson. BTW i have the exact same guitar ( only left hand version ) how do you like the mini humbuckers ? i really like them and i play alot of blues stuff too. Thanks again, great lesson. Cheers

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, I really love the guitar all-around. Love the satin finish, the weight relief, the baked maple fretboard ... and I think the mini hums are fantastic, especially the bridge. I have another guitar with the original Gibson mini humbuckers. They're different; not as hot. That's okay too, but I'm glad the mini's in this guitar are exactly the way they are!

    One of my favourite songs from one of my top three greatest rock bands ever with the guy I always wanted to be, the greatest rock singer alive, Paul Rogers... so, good choice mate.
    PS do the chords Mark, I worked them out once but would be interested to see your phrasing.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will do Anthony! And I plan to do more Bad Company ... yes, Paul Rogers was/is a great singer ... Free, Bad Co., The Firm, now Queen. His voice is really unique; not as hard-edged as many rock voices. IMHO that's why he has had such a long career. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment too!

      You're welcome. Glad it was helpful. I don't have a TH-cam tutorial on Rock Steady. I take it you mean Bad Company, not Aretha Franklin. Hard for me to get the Aretha song out of my head. So funky!

    Hey Mark, I'm late to the party, just discovered you...wonderful manner, laid back style, you make it look easy (but it isn't)...do you take requests? I've been trying to learn the two solos from Warren Zevon "When Johnny Strikes Up the Band"...Waddy is another under-rated player. any help would be great..thanks

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paco! I *do* take requests, though it's usually takes a while to get to them, since the queue is fairly long. That's a great song though, and I love Waddy's playing on it. Great sound, great note choices, very musical.

    Soloing ? Is f sharp minor , minor scale same as blues scale? Playing acoustic

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The F-sharp minor scale is different from the F-sharp blues scale and the F-sharp minor pentatonic. F-sharp is the key, so any of those scales will work well in improvising a solo for this song.

    More of a prophecy regarding Paul Kossoff who was alive and kicking when this was released, relatively speaking. :-(

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's true. Died way, way too young. Lived the life and died with it too. Do you know whether Angus Young lists him as a major influence? His vibrato and note choice is so similar to Kossoff's.

    • @000Angus000
      @000Angus000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkZabel I've not seen him mention Koss, but I agree. ACDC were due to tour with Back Street Crawler in 76, but fate had other plans. And they were both tiny Brits, originally, maybe handsize helps. :-) I

      Others don't seem to have the same trouble you're having, so perhaps you need a more beginner "paint by numbers" lesson. I spend a little time up front with simple music theory. It's particularly simple here, so if you're not following I'd definitely recommend a much more beginner style lesson to you. Good luck.
