my HS choir director is having us sing this and everyone got chills when we were all moving together dynamically. one of my favorite moments of senior year thus far.
My stepdad is in hospice care in his last days. He went to Luther College and loved the choir. I found this and played it for him. He was at peace and the room was filled with a blessed reverence. Thank you Luther College Choir for this exquisite music.
Mother Mary, full of grace, awaken. All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken, Taken by the sea. Mother Mary, calm our fears, have mercy, Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy, Hear our mournful plea. Our world has been shaken, We wander our homelands forsaken. In the dark night of the soul Bring some comfort to us all, Oh Mother Mary, come and carry, us in your embrace That our sorrows may be faced. Mary, fill the glass to overflowing, Illuminate the path where we are going, Have mercy on us all. In funeral fires burning Each flame to your mystery, returning. In the dark night of the soul Your shattered dreamers, make them whole, Oh Mother Mary, find us where we've fallen out of grace, Lead us to a higher place. In the dark night of the soul Our broken hearts you can make whole, Oh Mother Mary, come and carry us in your embrace, Let us see your gentle face, Mary.
This song is one of my best memories with my choir. During our performance someone backstage leaned on a light switch and the whole theater went dark at about 3:20. We finished the phrase then waited for the lights because our pianist couldnt see his music. Was an amazing experience.
back when I was in highschool, my choir went to see a college program and they sang this song. as soon as we got back, i begged and begged my choral director to let us sing this even though we already had a set list that we had already started practicing. Finally, she gave in and we sang it. By far one of most incredible pieces I've ever had the privilege to be a part of!
Sang this junior year (this year) with all of the choirs at my school. I love this song. We all cried or teared up at least once with this. Now with the COVID outbreak, our concerts have been canceled, contests canceled, states, and everything we worked so hard for; our spring concert. The last day before school let out, for what we didn't know would be the rest of the year, we held hands around the piano and sang this song.
If you get to sing this you are truly privileged. My friend sent me the link this morning on email. This is one great arrangement, too. This has been a big blessing in my day.
my choir sang this and it was beautiful. our director made us watch the movie "The Impossible" (about the Asian tsunami), and also told us about / showed us videos of his experience during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. our hearts broke. the emotions that are needed to evoke the meaning of this song are absolutely beautiful.
My brother sang this with a concert choir at his school. They sang it in remembrance of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, where they turned off all the lights and the students stood in the aisles holding candles as they sang this. It was an incredibly moving, emotional experience.
Ooh... Mother mary, full of grace, awaken, All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken, Taken by the sea, Mother mary calm our fears, have mercy, Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy, Hear our mournful plea, Our world has been shaken, We wander our homelands forsaken, In the dark night of the soul bring some comfort to us all, O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace, That our sorrows may be faced, Mary fill the glass to overflowing, Illuminate the path where we are going, Have mercy on us all, In funeral fires burning, Each flame to your mystery returning, In the dark night of the soul your shattered dreamers, Make them whole, O mother mary find us where we've fallen out of grace, Lead us to a higher place, In the dark night of the soul our broken hearts you can make whole, O mother mary come and carry us in your embrace, Let us see your gentle face, Mary. Ooh.
I sang this song my sophomore year of high school (I'm a senior now) and it's stuck with me and I think it always will. Other choir people will understand that there are those pieces that strike you in just the right way musically and emotionally and you still think about them sometimes in the quiet moments and the impact they had on you. I sang this in a massive choir (all of the choir students in the district grades 8-12) and I remember feeling the mournful mood in the choir and seeing the impact it had on the audience and it was a moment when I realized just how powerful choral music is. I love this recording of this song and I love this song in general.
SammietheAverageGirl this and Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre are the two that I performed in my time in high school choir that touched my soul the most. I graduated class of 2014, and to this day, I still sing seal lullaby to my 4 month old son 💜💜
We sang this at Mass this morning and every time we sing it, I have fight down the need to cry. It is by far one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and sung.
This is one of those songs that you want to sing in your choir, and want to be moved by. BUT! then when you're actually there in the choir singing it, and the entire room is filled with this extremely sad chord progression, not to mention the lyrics .. THEN you wish you weren't there! It's just too heavy.. Of Course depending on what you have experienced during your life.
It is a very heavy piece, but it is beautiful and reflects and shares the sadness and heartache and the story of the lives these people had to live, the situation they had to survive through... and let me tell you, that’s something worth sharing.
The folks at Luther College have their sound stuff totally together. I am so impressed everytime I listen to something they do. This is also such a heart rending piece of music. Thank you!
So amazing the anointing of the Holy Spirit hearing such words. Our Lady covering the world under her mantle. Praise Jesus she said YES to God the Fathers Divine Plan...I LOVE YOU OUR LADY❤🕊
I’ll never forget when I sang this song with my college choir some years ago. Had never heard it before, but it was immediately powerful. I don’t remember which one, but a strong hurricane had ended up landing somewhere in the southeast U.S. the semester we performed. Couldn’t help but shed a tear during the performance. Your performance here still brings up the same emotions. It’s beautiful
This is probably one of my most favorite choir songs EVER. We sang it, I believe, two years ago. Being an alto II, I LOVE the part of my voice this song uses and the tone color it produces. We did this for our All City concert, so every choir student from 4-12 sang it and it was BEAUTIFUL. Now, I just like to go back and listen to it because it makes me happy. (:
Our community choir just did this song for a benefit memorial concert. It's one of those songs that digs into your soul and sticks with you long afterward.
My choir took a trip to New York and we sang this song in a cathedral there. I couldn't sing it because it reminded me far too much of my grandmother who's funeral was the day before we took off for the trip. It still chokes me up
I'm going to sing this song in my choir either for the December or Spring concert at my school. I think this is a very beautiful song, reminds me of Wayfarin' Stranger which we sung a slow and sad version of the song last year. Songs like these make me tear up because of how touching they are. Can't wait to sing it
I remember singing this song in my choir when I was in 10th grade. We got the song a month after my father passed away, every time I sing/listen to it I tear up and get choked up...but it’s a beautiful song
I performed this once with an honor choir and all I can remember is feeling the room vibrate with beautiful sounds and even more beautiful feelings. Gorgeous song and performed so breathtakingly. I do wish that they had taken a greater pause before the final "Mary" or even taken it just a tad longer. Such a precious song deserves an emotional and heart felt end. I felt it was a little rushed, but wonderful none the less.
We chose to sing this song, and performed it days after the Japan incident occurred. However, at the time, we had no clue the following events would take place until they did. It's crazy, considering the goosebumps I've gotten from it before. And now? Forget it. I'm in tears from the very mention of this song.
I am so happy that I get to sing this in my advanced choir class, it really is a beautiful song and I get shook when we sing it because it is so moving.
This is such a lovely and moving piece to perform, and I absolutely disagree with the commenters (@ ProjectFilmTech) who are saying this is too fast. I think the tempo here is perfect - it is natural and intimate, like a real person talking and praying to Mary in their sadness and grief and despair. I have seen other performances on here that are much slower, and they are dreadful. They are too ponderous, I guess in attempt to sound more "sacred", or to convey whatever emotion the director has in mind, but it's not necessary. The music itself accomplishes that beautifully. There is also a performance here on TH-cam of Eliza Gilkyson performing this. Her tempo is comparable to this. It flows, it sounds authentic. Thumbs up on this one. And yes, it's very hard to sing without welling up.
The way a song is sung is up to the interpretation of the conductor. While your conductor may have had you do something different than what they did it doesn't mean they were incredible. This gives me chills everytime..
sooo awesome, my choir performed this a few months ago but at a slower tempo and i think that really stretched the emotion, i would have loved to hear this at a slower tempo..i prob would have cried
this song was written as a tribute to the lost one in a tsunami. i forgot which tsunami but i know when my choir sang this all i could think of was the destruction of the tsunami brought
Actually, it was written way before the Japanese Tsunami. It was for the tsunami in Thailand the day after Christmas, and has since been used for hurricane Katrina and the Japanese tsunami
People who sing in choirs are a special kind of blessed.....you that sing in them know what I mean.
+telebob thank you
telebob thank you 😂😂❤️❤️
I'm in choir and I'm not "blessed", since I don't believe in God.
telebob thx so much
Hana Chan blessed doesn’t have to be religious if you don’t want it to be sooo
my HS choir director is having us sing this and everyone got chills when we were all moving together dynamically. one of my favorite moments of senior year thus far.
same! this song is so special and beautiful
My stepdad is in hospice care in his last days. He went to Luther College and loved the choir. I found this and played it for him. He was at peace and the room was filled with a blessed reverence. Thank you Luther College Choir for this exquisite music.
I’m so sorry, I hope you are okay. You are not alone

Andi Darkshade at a clinic this song literally sent my choir into a mental breakdown of emotion & bonding

I feel that we left for spring break and never came back
My church choir sang this today, March 11, 2012 in honor of the victims of the
March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
If you get to sing this you are truly privileged. My friend sent me the link this morning on email. This is one great arrangement, too. This has been a big blessing in my day.

I also sang this song with the same arrangement, although we didn’t get super deep into the cause of this song, I still got touched
My brother sang this with a concert choir at his school. They sang it in remembrance of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, where they turned off all the lights and the students stood in the aisles holding candles as they sang this. It was an incredibly moving, emotional experience.
The meaning behind the words are so sad. we sang this my senior year and I would cry every time. A truly beautiful peace of work.

This song will always have a special place in my choral heart. Nearly burst out in tears singing this years ago. ❤

I sang this 10 years ago during my freshman year of college. Still get goosebumps when I hear it.
I remember singing this in my junior year in high school. Such a great song.
Matthew Schooley Agreed. :,) I used this song in a music video...
The folks at Luther College have their sound stuff totally together. I am so impressed everytime I listen to something they do. This is also such a heart rending piece of music. Thank you!

this song is being done by our high school choir. It brings so much out of the human heart, and is such a gorgeous piece.
My choir is doing this for our spring concert, too! I LOVE it. We're doing it in complete darkness, too. It's unbelievable.

Our community choir just did this song for a benefit memorial concert. It's one of those songs that digs into your soul and sticks with you long afterward.
The most simple, and yet beautiful song I've heard in a long time. a REALLY long time.
My choir took a trip to New York and we sang this song in a cathedral there. I couldn't sing it because it reminded me far too much of my grandmother who's funeral was the day before we took off for the trip. It still chokes me up
I sang this song after hurricane Harvey in 2K17, and started to cry seeing everyone who was effected by the storm cry.
OMG
We did this song in choir last year. Sang it for the Concordia Honor Choir that I was in too... I cried like a baby.
Our choir just started this song, I love it so much! It is so deep, and emotion filled, this is an awesome performance.
I LOVE IT I THINK THAT THIS KIND OF SONGS IS WHAT KEEPS THE WORLD GOING...
*sniff* *sniff* its so beautiful its like a person hugging u say "it's all right" as u cry is sorrow and joy
I'm going to sing this song in my choir either for the December or Spring concert at my school. I think this is a very beautiful song, reminds me of Wayfarin' Stranger which we sung a slow and sad version of the song last year. Songs like these make me tear up because of how touching they are. I've been listening to many versions online by Choirs, and this Luther College version to me sounds the best.
I remember singing this song in my choir when I was in 10th grade. We got the song a month after my father passed away, every time I sing/listen to it I tear up and get choked up...but it’s a beautiful song
