The building is designed around the theme of time: four towers to represent the seasons, 12 floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys symbolise the weeks, and originally there were 365 bedrooms, one for each day of a non-leap year. Now there are 413 rooms
Hi Stephen I've stayed here many times some visits have been good others not so good had to change rooms a couple of times because of the noise coming from the seagulls it was horrendous they seem to have got it all under control it gets many bad and negative reviews but I love it there because of it's history and where it is I had one room where the bathroom was bigger than room it's self it has been refurbished a bit and cleaned up because it was looking very dirty and neglected loved the video ❤
As an Aussie, i find it fascinating that there are buildings in the uk older then white Australia. just love how they dont bulldoze old buildings, unlike in Australia. great to watch
Stayed there last year.. Was brilliant for the price. Yes it's got some bits that need attention but it's in a fabulous location and the hotel does the job
Glad they changed your room, can you just imagine if walls could talk, going all the way back to the 1800's all the different people who have stayed and worked there,it must've been absolutely brilliant in the day. Your room definitely looks like it's been cut in half and the other room next door was probably the other half. Thanks again for another great insight into these beautiful buildings Stephen.
I've stayed there a few times, usually in one of the single rooms with sea view. However the travelodge across from it is usually cheaper and has earlier check in.
Thanks Steve for this. I found the hotel far too big and a little creepy. It reminded me a little of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Another great video. It must have been an interesting experience. Gorgeous view and sunrise.
Hi Steve,we been going to Scarborough for over 45 years and always look forward to returning...don't forget Filey and Filey Brigg and Inghams fish restuarant in the town !!
I love Scarborough. I was there the day the house fell into the sea, didn't see it happen, I found out about it when I got home. There's a link to Blackpool as Arriva Northern Spirit Transpennine used to run an hourly train from Blackpool the Scarborough, Via my old local station Accrington.
Thanks so much! My dad regularly stayed there, on coach trips. That was 20 years ago. Looks like it's got a bit run down, but the history screams out at you. Beautiful building. If walls could talk. I've only ever seen photos, so fabulous to see all way through the hotel. Brings tears to my eyes as my dad adored staying there. Thank you very much. Excellent job. Take care.
i remember staying here around 2018 and it was absolutely awful, the first room had a leaky radiator meaning the floor was damp, the second was fine until we came to get in bed and found the sheets wet beyond belief, this was about 1am at this point and upon going back to reception we were given the key for a 2nd room (we had two rooms at this point since we were not allowed to move our luggage at 1am) the room we were given the key too was boiling (so i guess the opposite to your issue haha), upon going back and telling reception this a cleaner remarked we were "being difficult" and "just trying to stay in every room in the hotel", after this we were given another room key and finally at 2:30am we got some sleep, upon going back to reception in the morning i made a formal complaint about the stay and got a refund as well as i got to keep my late checkout, all in all would never stay there again, i went back in 2019 and stayed in the Travelodge over the road and had a much better experience.
The place had a ruddy miserable feel about it. Soulless. No background music, a bit of opera maybe, no welcoming log fire anywhere that I seen. I would have turned round and said I want to go somewhere with a more homely atmosphere.
Great video thanks, on the site of the grand hotel was a house that Ann Brontë passed away in, she’s the only one of the Brontes Who is not buried in Howarth
Hi Stephen enjoyed your vlog on Skeggy last time I was there was a week with mum about 2009 so a few years ago I heard your comments about what people have to say about you doing vlogs on the rougher side of blackpool I have been going there fir 40 years and yes there are bad areas so there is everywhere the fact that you are honest enough to show that aswell is a credit to you plus I always know which areas to avoid lol was sorry you had some banging going on in your hotel at Scarborough lol and the door on your room looked like it had been gouged out near the lock I think that's probably why it was loose the room did look nice though glad you managed to keep warm in the end thank-you see you on the next one x
Interesting video Stephen, I visited Scarborough over fifty years ago with my late husband and young family, we stayed in a lovely cosy B&B. I remember standing outside of the Grand Hotel admiring the exterior, but wouldn’t like to have stayed there, having a fear of loads of corridors and lifts having been trapped in one more than once, thank you 🙏 for a little trip back on time 🤗
Great video!! You sent our minds back to our "night at the Adelphi" (or 2 in Liverpool a few years ago). It's a long story we'd love to share sometime. Suffice it to say, the Grand Hotel Scarborough is reminiscent of times gone by. What we wouldn't give to see it in its glory. We love your Blackpool videos, good and bad! PLEASE don't change. Show it as it is. Much love. Stay safe and warm. 😉💕
I had an overnight in the Adelphi in November 2022. It certainly gives off an illusion of grandeur when you are in the communal areas, but the rooms were very dated. I didn’t think it was as bad as some folk have made it out to be mind you, but it was only somewhere for us to lay our head for the night and there’s no way I would have stayed any longer than that one night.
Thankyou stephen for another great video, i love scarborough, quite a few years since i went and have some scarborough souvineers in my cabinet: i also went up the tram lift instead of the steps. Happy to see the hotel had proper keys for the rooms, i am hopeless with key cards😊
Unfortunately, my granddaughter had a very difficult and traumatic event at this Hotel (with excessive dark “bureaucracy”). A beautiful bedroom with a copper bath was discovered on the fourth floor of this Hotel. The bathroom had a terrible smell of human waste and upon complaining the woman told us that the Fosse septic tank was completely blocked. The woman who sold us the room told us that the Hotel had completely emptied the septic tank a year before, which turned out to be false! At the official reception point we discovered that the septic tank had not been emptied since 1987 and this is the reason for the drain to be disgusting in the bathroom.
We stay here a lot for short breaks as cheap and great for our dog as well so a great base really. We usually eat elsewhere but can confirm the beer is ok and the room is clean and tidy. Remember this is a old hotel and people do forget that with their comments. In summary this place is ok and does the job!!😎🍺
Good Evening Steve. What a very Historical Hotel The Grand. Absolutely stunning. If the Walls and Rooms could talk, what would they say? Very Impressive from the outside. Your room Steve, was not to bad. Very Lovely Double or was a Kingsize? rather a nice bathroom and shower. Your Breakfast looked alright. For the money Steve, pretty Good. I did like the steps leading down to the front of the Hotel and Promenade. Scarborough Beach looked absolutely Gorgeous. What a very Lovely and Historical Archade Amusement Games Center i saw. I really did Enjoy this video Steve. I would Love to go and visit Scarborough. Thank you very much for sharing your video Steve. Hope you had a Great time in Scarborough. Did you know, there was a Famous song came out years ago called " Have You been to Scarborough Fair " Fact!!! 😃😃😃😃🤓🤓🤓👍👍👍👍👍👍
Interesting you did this hotel Stephen. Walk With Me Tim stayed here last year I believe it was. Not the best experience as he found out. Breakfast looked very average and external noise coming from somewhere in your room. It’s very dated. That lift was an experience in itself and yes that’s a funicular railway next door. Apologies that Katie from Myers Family was doing a live stream at exactly the same time.
Britannia seam to own all the landmark hotels Alelphi Liverpool, scarisbrick Southport, Norbreck Blackpool, & whats left of Pontins. After putting their label on the place, they spend pennies where pounds are needed, and the places end up looking tired, , Covid & immigrants filling the place doesnt help.
The V shape of the hotel is either ,to honour queen Victoria or to stagger the weight of the hotel on the cliff . This is to lessen the chances of collapse . The real James Herriot (Alf White) spent part of his war enlistment staying with hundreds of other service men He stayed in one of the four tower's . He promised himself he would go back after the war & stay as guest . The original builder of the hotel went bust when it was partially built . Some other builder took over to finish the job a while later.
Hard to imagine the running costs of this place in our present day economy. The heating costs alone must be extortionate. Back in the day there would have been staff scurrying back and forth all carrying out their various tasks and eager to assist the patrons. How times have changed!! The view from your window is amazing, beautiful, inspirational and engaging. It's such a pity to see the interior of the building so devoid of life and atmosphere. I hope you consider a revisit in the summer to find out if there is a seasonal contrast.
Was thinking the same - the costs of keeping up that decor, the high ceilings, the vacuuming of those vast areas! Yes, a repeat visit in high season would be good.
Visiting these traditional sea side towns would make a great tv series especially with the slant you put on it Stephen.Any ideas of with British resort you will be visiting next? I would rather stay in Scarborough than Skegness going off your video..well done.Very enjoyable viewing
Thanks Stephen for showing us this hotel. It looks great from the outside. also your video from inside is very interesting. The rooms should all be warm this time of the year. see you in your next video 👍❤️
From experience at the Savoy in Blackpool, also a Britannia replacement tea, coffee etc is available at reception.Yes it’s Scarborough Castle on the hill run by English Heritage, heck of a walk up the hill from the harbour .
I stayed here a couple of times in the 80's when it was a Butlins hotel great times when i was a young boy. I remember them steps i used to love to walk down them and get the wee tram up. I always loved the view from the dining room window. Great video Stephen thanks for the memories.
Great vlog. Ive stayed there quite a few times. Fabulous building and staircase. I love an old hotel full of character. I imagine all the victorian ladies gliding down the grand staircase in their crinoline dresses. Fabulous.
The Grand Hotel isn’t so grand anymore needs a complete overhaul Can’t believe you’ve never been to Scarborough before 😃 Hope you get to see Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay 2 of my favourite places And if you do get to Whitby you must try Trenchers for Fish & Chip 😋
Great video Steve. I love old hotels and wandering around the corridors, I think it's because I'm a big fan of The Shining😂 As a kid I went with my parents maybe 5 times a year to the Fernlea Hotel in St Annes. When the Crostons extended it you could walk around and the corridors and they would change as you went from the new part into the old parts of the Hotel bit like The Shining but without the lift full of blood😂 Anyway great video keep up the good work.
Even though it has seen better days it certainly still is a stunning building. Fascinating history. As someone else commented it was designed around the theme of time. I stayed there for a night last summer. By booking in advance I managed to get a room similar to yours with a sea view for around £60 which I didn't think was too bad especially bearing in mind it was the height of the season. I was certainly happy with the room. Yes its grandear may be faded now and it still could do with a bit more TLC but its still an amazing and fascinating building. I'd definitely stay there again.
Yes was told by some locals when they asked where I was staying, although I wished they had , Not rushing to go back as its another Britannia Hotel like the Metropole & Grand in Llandudno and even Pontins
22 35 Scarborough gets it's water from various sources these days as Yorkshire water have a more connected supply network, and still can use aquifer water near Pickering.
You did well such a lovely hotel it’s just been refurbished since Tim’s video and it’s reminded me on how much I love Scarborough will be visiting some time soon ❤
I expect the cliff lift tramway is closed in winter. It is a funicular railway. Scarborough is a wonderful place. Lots of history. Yes it’s a castle and the marine drive goes right round into the North Bay. The hotel is shaped V in honour of Queen Victoria.
Have you ever filmed a night in the van, that might be interesting. Nice view, and such an historic building - we really enjoyed a groupon afternoon tea here with great views but the rooms just look a bit depressing and at least for what you paid not even great value despite the wonderful view. Breakfast was very odd normally when plated for you it looks better than a buffet but that one didn't!
Great update fella, blimey that breakfast was well and truly nuked with an egg lobbed on at the end, you could have been there at the table for another hour and the steam would still be coming off the plate. 😁👍
Yes! I thought Stephen's breakfast looked rather duff!!! If I stay at a hotel I expect a "good" experience - but poor old Stephen looked rather disappointed!
The hotel, from the façade, looks beautiful, but it just seems tired. Hallway carpet just plopped down, no padding underneath, so you can hear the floorboards creaking. The room looks nice, as well as the bathroom, but is it worth £95+ off-season? Not really. But I like indirect lighting; the hallway lighting is much too bright because of natural light LED bulbs. A beautiful view of the sea.
I was booked to do a wedding in Scarborough and we stayed at the travelodge opposite the Grand. It was disgusting. The corridors stunk of piss and booze. We were supposed to be there for two nights but found a different hotel the following day.
Great Video Stephen. I have never been to Scarborough but I must say it looks a lovely place. I bet it's banging in the summer. Stephen when you said they gave you a cold room I though oh no it's kicking off in Scarborough 👍👍😁 Lol
Hi Stephen, what a great video showing the Grand hotel. We’ve stayed in the Grand quite a few times and the cheaper rooms are not as nice as yours was. It does feel as though you are in the ‘dungeons’ on the lower down rooms. Am enjoying these videos showing the East coast Stephen, even though we’ve been many times. Can’t beat going to Blackpool though! See you in your next one.xxxx
Spot on Video Stephen, we loved it all, Id love to see you travel around in summertime when its busier. Cant believe you slept in your van in those temps, Id love to see Lee The Macmaster tackle that Breakfast lol, still a lovely hotel all the same, many places of that age are in ruin or have been demolished, so good on Scarborough for having something so impressive.
Great video ! Very interesting to see the inside of the Grand Hôtel ! I stayed at the Clifton Hotel when I went to Scarborough which I could have recommended at the time ( 10 years ago).
If your ever back in Scarborough Steven take a look at the Crown Spa Hotel. Ive stayed there many times but from family and friends there telling me the standards have really slipped.👍
A nice hotel. Very impressive from outside. Your room wasn't bad at all. Bathroom a bit dated but it was OK. Telly was a bit small. Your brekkie looked good.
Hi Stephen, as you alluded to early on in the video the hotel has seen better days, Brittania Group are well known for taking on run down hotels and spending little on their upkeep! For the money you paid and the breakfast shown a Travelodge is always a better option. Scarborough is quaint, has also seen better days but still enjoyable to visit occasionally. The Stephen Joseph Theatre is worth a visit if you are a Theatre patron. If you enjoy Italian food then you have to visit Ask Italian on the sea front. Peasholme Park is also worth a visit equivalent era to Stanley Park. 😊
Very enjoyable vlog Stephen. I think you did very well. The bathroom spoilt it. Looked a bit like one on a hospital ward. But I thought the room was lovely. I hope you enjoyed your time away.
They always employ unskilled staff in the kitchens in posh hotels..if the breakfast was fabulous it would encourage more footfall…they need to get some top chefs..great food great location great building….its a winning formula..
Next come llandudno try grand holtel ther has been refurbished now hope u enjoyed scarborough next time ther the place on north called leeway guest house good with breakfast i went to u room looks ok
My Nan used to take herself off on the train to Scarborough and always treated herself to stay in the Grand Hotel what a shame it’s looking so run down now in comparison to 20years ago. When you look at the front there’s 3 curved side areas at each end the top ones still have a window and the bottom ones have been bricked up by the looks of it. May have been servants rooms or ladies dressing rooms in the past and now turned into small bedrooms ? I’m surprised it’s not full up like the Metropole !
I've noticed that many hotels have recently been letting the quality "slip" so you get a "disappointing" breakfast which only just meets the "trade description act" of a "breakfast"!!! How sad!!! Simply down to minimum staff on minimum wages, and cost cutting owing to rising energy bills etc. It's high time that hotels bring back a QUALITY service AND serve a breakfast to be PROUD OF!!! (even if priced higher). Quality matters, particularly when customers are on holiday and hoping for a "good experience"!!!
You could see by the look of the breakfast and the stewed colour of it all that it was not going to be memorable. You could have got a Ginster's Cornish Pasty for one twenty five from Tesco
What a joke. Even a cafe would have offered a fried tomatoe along with the bacon and eggs. Tinned tomatoes I have never seen before. I would have sent the lot back.
The way you imitated the lift voice and snorted made me laugh mate, you absolute legend, Great video buddy.
Ta pal
The building is designed around the theme of time: four towers to represent the seasons, 12 floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys symbolise the weeks, and originally there were 365 bedrooms, one for each day of a non-leap year. Now there are 413 rooms
Very interesting. I did hear about that from someone else.
That is superb bit of info chatboy 25..I never knew that
Correct
Hi Stephen I've stayed here many times some visits have been good others not so good had to change rooms a couple of times because of the noise coming from the seagulls it was horrendous they seem to have got it all under control it gets many bad and negative reviews but I love it there because of it's history and where it is I had one room where the bathroom was bigger than room it's self it has been refurbished a bit and cleaned up because it was looking very dirty and neglected loved the video ❤
Also the 'V' shape was to honour Queen Victoria.
Gaz North Yorkshire coast.

Yes Diane. I do think that room was bigger in the olden days.
I've stayed there a few times, usually in one of the single rooms with sea view. However the travelodge across from it is usually cheaper and has earlier check in.
Less ghosts too.
@@Wicked_Rlass history and not nearly has majestic
Thanks Steve for this. I found the hotel far too big and a little creepy. It reminded me a little of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Another great video. It must have been an interesting experience. Gorgeous view and sunrise.
Here comes Jonny!!!
Hi Steve,we been going to Scarborough for over 45 years and always look forward to returning...don't forget Filey and Filey Brigg and Inghams fish restuarant in the town !!
When I was a kid we would go to Scarborough every year , use to go hunting crabs etc to Robin Hood’s Bay .
Great looking building on the outside. And you can still see the 19th-century charm on the interior.
Looks awesome Stephen shame it wasn’t warm and cosy there 😊
I love Scarborough. I was there the day the house fell into the sea, didn't see it happen, I found out about it when I got home. There's a link to Blackpool as Arriva Northern Spirit Transpennine used to run an hourly train from Blackpool the Scarborough, Via my old local station Accrington.

"Pillows Stephen, they are called pillows"
Laughed so hard at that!
I’ve no idea why I called them cushions lol 😂
Thanks for sharing Stephen I love Scarborough ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
That corridor, I was expecting twin girls standing there...
👭 Hello Steven 🥶
My traveller tip for UK hotels is take your own fan heater 🤫🌡
That's ME walking the corridors with an Axe - JACK NICHOLSON.....Here come's Jonny!!!!!
Great video, really good to see you staying and reviewing a hotel - would love to see more.
i remember staying here around 2018 and it was absolutely awful, the first room had a leaky radiator meaning the floor was damp, the second was fine until we came to get in bed and found the sheets wet beyond belief, this was about 1am at this point and upon going back to reception we were given the key for a 2nd room (we had two rooms at this point since we were not allowed to move our luggage at 1am) the room we were given the key too was boiling (so i guess the opposite to your issue haha), upon going back and telling reception this a cleaner remarked we were "being difficult" and "just trying to stay in every room in the hotel", after this we were given another room key and finally at 2:30am we got some sleep, upon going back to reception in the morning i made a formal complaint about the stay and got a refund as well as i got to keep my late checkout, all in all would never stay there again, i went back in 2019 and stayed in the Travelodge over the road and had a much better experience.

I had an overwhelmingly warmer reception at the Wetherspoons hotel I stayed at in Whitby, where I drove up to after this.
Great video thanks, on the site of the grand hotel was a house that Ann Brontë passed away in, she’s the only one of the Brontes Who is not buried in Howarth
Please do more bids like this it was very enjoyable , great job lovely hotel beautiful views wish I was there 👍👍👍👍👍

Like the video and your room had a lovely sea view. Thanks for filming the breakfast.
The bathrooms were only added in the 1980’s before that there was shared bathrooms and toilets so part of the modern room were lost to the bathroom
Thankyou stephen for another great video, i love scarborough, quite a few years since i went and have some scarborough souvineers in my cabinet: i also went up the tram lift instead of the steps. Happy to see the hotel had proper keys for the rooms, i am hopeless with key cards😊
thanks Carol. I had a go on the lift in my main Scarborough video.

and it’s reminded me on how much I love Scarborough will be visiting some time soon ❤
Very interesting hotel. Seen on tv, lovely inside. Scarborough a bit too hilly for me. Prefer Blackpool more flat. Thanks for showing Stephen 👍🏻😀☀️
Another good video, l bet the Hotel back in the day was lovely, when new,
Must have been.
You should do a best and worst hotel series 😀
Great video Stephen I would never get out of there everything looks the same ❤
It looked like the shower had mold between the tiles. (at 9:49 in the video)
I played in a glam rock band at the caravan park, horrendous, took ages to get there from newcastle.
I think The MacMaster would have been more brutal about the breakfast than me!
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool Me too, no doubt about it, Take Care.
Great video, we always went to the Park Manor hotel just up from the north bay, i love there and Whitby.
thanks Stephen for another great video
I loved your hotel room review very helpful indeed, maybe do more hotel reviews etc..maybe in Blackpool too..
Great video ! Very interesting to see the inside of the Grand Hôtel ! I stayed at the Clifton Hotel when I went to Scarborough which I could have recommended at the time ( 10 years ago).
Clifton hotel stay clear of that one
If your ever back in Scarborough Steven take a look at the Crown Spa Hotel. Ive stayed there many times but from family and friends there telling me the standards have really slipped.👍
i think you do a good, detailled review! i like Scarborough, it does get some good sunrises, good beaches too! and i bet that sea gets really rough!
A nice hotel. Very impressive from outside. Your room wasn't bad at all. Bathroom a bit dated but it was OK. Telly was a bit small. Your brekkie looked good.
Never stayed at the Grand but the Travel Lodge opposite which used to be the St Nicholas hotel is very comfortable.
The travelodge makes the grand look like a nice place!
Thanks for this tour of The Grand Stephen. Scarborough doesn’t have distant views of the Lake District or Snowdonia, the Yorkshire coast IS the view!
Had my honeymoon there in April 1979.
Nice beautiful old building
Very enjoyable video
Oh, forgot to mention.... most rooms also come with their own seagull at no extra cost
Mr Wild Side, maybe you could do a tour of all of the once grand hotels that Britannia have taken over to see how they compare.
Very enjoyable vlog Stephen. I think you did very well. The bathroom spoilt it. Looked a bit like one on a hospital ward. But I thought the room was lovely. I hope you enjoyed your time away.
I haven't been to Scarborough since I joined the Army, after a train journey from Blackpool. I remember it as a chilly place, especially on the moors.
Good evening Stephen I'm sorry i missed the Premier tonight as i was at a meeting I'll watch it now i hope you're well
Been messing about on my sim here in uk...euro wheel, using straight up bet on 0 and 1 other no. ...then 10 splits...looks ok
They always employ unskilled staff in the kitchens in posh hotels..if the breakfast was fabulous it would encourage more footfall…they need to get some top chefs..great food great location great building….its a winning formula..
We live in a small town closer to Scarborough
it name hornsea and that a great place to come on holiday
Next come llandudno try grand holtel ther has been refurbished now hope u enjoyed scarborough next time ther the place on north called leeway guest house good with breakfast i went to u room looks ok
I enjoyed your video Steven I love Scarborough and stayed in the grand. I would stay there again ❤
Should have made a dash back across to Blackpool for the sunset.. Capture both on the same day.
Should be named the "used to be Grand Hotel". Great video Steve 👍👍
