- 513 stands for 5 pickups and 13 sounds, achieved with an easy to use integrated electronics control package, which includes volume control, tone control and two blade switches. One blade switch is a 5-way pickup selector, and the other is a 3-way mode switch that allows you to select between the singlecoil, clear humbucking and heavy humbucking modes. One of our most versatile instruments, the 513 now comes with a swamp ash body, and Pattern Regular mahogany neck.
V12 Finish
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.
Pattern Regular Neck Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for us and a hallmark of our quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. The new "Pattern Regular" neck shape is similar to the traditional PRS regular neck found on guitars made in the late 80's at PRS's former Virginia Avenue location.
This new neck shape reflects modern tooling and programming that allows us to even more precisely shape and consistently reproduce our necks.

The middle pickup is not effected by the humbucking/single switch, as it is simply a single coil pickup itself. When you demo the center pickup, you can hear there is not any change when running through that selector. So it's only 4 positions x 3 = 12, then 1 middle single. Voila - 4 x 3 + 1 = 13. And that is is the 513.

This guitar is the BEST STRAT FENDER NEVER MADE" , got one for a friend who needs a swiss-army knife guitar as he covers a huge range of styles in a show.He loves it do death as it is everything he needs.From Hank-Marvin to Carlos at the flick of a switch whats not to love? the ash body gives that harder F" tone that the Mahog's don't , like all PRS guitar there isn't a bad note in it, balance is superb and even, my own Studio is just the same quality and playability.My only other six string needs are my Tele-custom thin line which is also a unique hand-built model so most bases covered, PRS rules .

Middle pos. is allway's single coil, 3way switch doesn't affect it.
@aninstrumentalvision - Actually, it IS effected by that switch; when in "heavey humbucking" mode that position acts like a boost for the single coil. It probably should have been called the 514. I like mine, that's for sure.
fender twin reissue, mesa road king II, Marhshall Vintage modern, Marshall Silver Jubilee 1st circuit, Marshall Jubilee Latest circuit, Marshall DSL. My opinion is based on comparison I've made among my other prs guitars, fender, and gibsons
I have both and the mahogany is more open, the swamp ash is more focused on the mids
Oh ok. I havent played the 513 yet, but its the prs that caught my eye,and i dont want to shell out 3 grand for something im not going to like lol. so ill have to play one. but i have no way of doing that because no guitar shops that are close to me have them.
Hi i am planing to buy a PRS Custom 24 or a PRS 513. How would you compare both these..?? I want your view as its too much of money to invest.I mostly play fusion stuff. Which one would you recommend for me and why..!! Kindly comment.

trevor98...I'll assume your name means you were born in 1998 so I'll take it easy on you...if you can't tell that a paul reed smith sounds good then music might not be for you...you can say something isn't exactly your thing, of course...but these guitars sound GREAT...on a side note...did anyone notice he was using "humbucking" modes on the center pickup? that doesn't make much sense...it's a single coil pickup, right? it's not one of those single slot humbuckers is it? it honestly didn't soun

they don't sound very good. I own it. And this is the only prs I don't like.
Paul Reed Smiths sound like crap. Sorry. Can't touch real Gibson Les Pauls or real Strats.
That's your opinion, and not truth. It's a very 'cork sniffer' comment.
I have Strats, Tele's, Les Paul's, and PRS's. PRS has their own voice, and it's a great one. It's not suppose to be a Gibson or Fender. If that's what you expect, don't get a PRS.
But the 513 Swamp Ash (I own one) will certainly go in either neighborhood without being, nor suppose to be a clone. PRS doesn't make 'crap' guitars... but Gibson and Fender can. Of course those company's make great guitars, but not all are. I understand though... you're a hater of PRS guitars.
