  • Lesra Martin is an inspiring example of the power in each of us to make a difference. Functionally illiterate, Lesra realized that in order to achieve his dream of attending university, he would need to learn to read and write. His first book purchase (for 25 cents at a used book sale) was The 16th Round: From #1 Contender to Prisoner #45472. Lesra immediately became engrossed with Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's incredible autobiography of a man convicted of a triple-murder that he did not commit. Upon completing the story he wrote a letter to Carter who was 13 years into a triple-life sentence for a crime he did not commit.

    I met Lesra when he was starting law school in Halifax Nova Scotia. My son was moving into the apartment above him. Marion and I were sitting on the porch with Lesra, just making small talk. He asked where we were from --- Marion said "Brooklyn", that got his interest, Then I said I was from "Rahway New Jersey" but he "probably would never have heard of it." So of course he gave us the whole story.

    This story is a miracle. Rubin Carter was freed from imprisonment due to the help of Lesra Martin Canadian family that considered looking further into his innocence. And Lesra became inspired by Carter to push his way through any disbeliefs. This story is heartbreaking but also inspiring, If the two had not met Carter would've been in prison until death.

    Lesra should feel very proud of himself. He was given a great opportunity & took full advantage of it. Alot of weaker people would have thrown that opportunity away.

      I don't know about that. Not many get that opportunity or have the desire.

    I'm 53 years old my hero was my mother. I'm old enough to remember the bullshit Ruben went through. I didn't need a movie to let me know he was innocent!

    Great story but I had to LOL @ the part where the narrator (4:00) refers to Canada as a "foreign land" especially Toronto, Canada.

    All of you who believe that Rubin Carter was guilty should listen to the Bob Dylan song "Hurricane" it actually says that Carter is innocent and the song is extremely accurate and here's proof of that Dylan actually visited Carter in jail to make sure his song about Carter would be accurate.

    • @peacefulbliss1
      @peacefulbliss1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There you have it, Bob Dylan wrote a song about him, therefore Carter must be innocent!

    It wasn't uncommon to frame black innocence men for crimes around that era and location. Police methods were pretty poor and relied more on suspicions then proof Rubin Carter is an innonence man. Why would someone who was at the high of their career, with a new child and wife undertake such a crime. All the haters need to take a look at themselves and do some study. Can I recommend the website of- the innocence project

    • @peacefulbliss1
      @peacefulbliss1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carter was NOT at the "height" of his career when the murders happened, he was a losing fighter at that point (don't you research anything?), and was far from being "champion of the world". Stop believing the movie which was a work of fiction. I suggest you should look up graphicwitness.com and educate yourself about this case.

    In all honesty though, did you even read my comment? I complimented Lesra Martin and put aside my thoughts on Carter to pay respect to Martin's life. Martin, in case you haven't noticed is black. If I was actually a racist, I would judge Martin as not being worthy of respect.
    Also, although I am white, I was raised with 3 Cubans whom my parents adopted before I was born. I grew up as a racial minority in my own house. Racism is quite simply not an issue during my decision making process.

    Being from Brooklyn myself, I know for a certainty that the New York Board of Ed is a joke, but I find it hard to believe that he was illiterate at age 15 while going to school. There are just too many checks (standardized and classroom tests) for me to believe he was illiterate. I won't knock his ' illiterate, poor boy from the ghetto, helped by white canadians' hustle.

    Yes you're right. It's his blackness. It has nothing to do his car being identified by two independent eye witnesses and found a few blocks away from the bar only minutes after the shooting. It has nothing to do with the ammo found in his car. Or that multiple witnesses confessed to lying to the police for him. It also has nothing to do with with his failing multiple lie detection tests or how he changed his alibi 4 different times. It's all to do with his blackness.
    Research before you speak
