    Mads and Ava. l’ve followed you for so long and admire your voracity concerning the reconfiguration of your ships. I have dreamed of a water life for so long, but unfortunately At 65 I am beat up and can no longer get into the “small places” and do all the maintenance necessary to sustain a watercraft. We were ready to give up everything 4 years ago and sail away, but life takes a toll and you have to accept aging. I have so much experience with fiberglass and wood, but just can’t handle the positions necessary to get the job done. You seem like such a “regular couple” and I hope you well on the rest of your journey!

    Congratulations! You have an unique ring. My wife does too. When we got engaged we were living on a small remote island in the Pacific. There were no stores to get a ring, but an abundance of coconuts. So, I made her ring out of a coconut shell. She is proud to say she has the only coconut engagement ring in the world.

    Nice. Congrats on the plans for getting hitched-up eventually.
    Coming to the US East Coast to do the ICW cruising grounds for a few seasons seems to make a lot of sense.
    The "Loop" I would advise against, but going up the Hudson and into the Great Lakes is an awesome idea. It is one of the prime cruising grounds IN THE SUMMER.
    Go in and have fun while the hurricane season is going on in the Atlantic and then pop on down the ICW again for winters in Florida and/or the Bahamas and further Caribbean.
    There is a HUGE community still doing the annual migrations on the ICW and the outside passages, so the infrastructure is there to make cruising the area for years as easy or as challenging as you could care to make it.
    The entire cruising community there is extremely friendly and helpful which makes the lifestyle very enjoyable here. But doing the entire loop, including the Mississippi and gulf section is not as nice as the rest -especially the awesome Great Lakes and the Canadian passages I have been told.
    We plan to do those again this coming summer since it eas so nice coming from Chicago last year but we were rushed to get to thr Atlantic. Once it gets warm enough for us to leave Florida we are going to head north. (We HATE cold.)
    Cruising the West coast is doable but the infrastructure is just not there, the sailing climate is a bit harsh at times, and it is a long trek all the way through the Panama Canal to get there is going to take what seems like forever.

    If you decide to do the ICW and then "the Great Loop", you will likely go up the Hudson, and then into Lake Ontario at which point you have two options... you can go up through the Trent/Severn Canals to Georgian Bay which contains the 30,000 Islands which many people claim is the best fresh water cruising in the world (and my backyard). The path from there is up to Sault Ste. Marie and the junction of Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. From there it is into Lake Michigan and down to Chicago... then down the Mississippi and/or the Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico and back into the Caribbean. It would be cool sailing in G'Bay and down to Chicago on Lake Michigan but as others have said, you'll have to drop the mast for big portions of the trip and much of it is river travel so not much "sailing". I haven't done the full loop but I've talked to hundreds in the middle of it and they all say it's about an 11 month trip to do it right. If you do get to this neck of the woods, I'll make sure to show you both a good time!

    Mads, if you don't do anything about the core in the structural members.. Won't that affect the humidity of the Hull and in the end again pose an osmosis threat?

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wondering if it were possible to drill larger holes through the laminate in order to allow the air to flow through the wet core and eventually dry it out over time.
      A marine engineer/architect could do the math again to see if a few holes here and there would do much to weaken the figures Mads has already had run. Maybe insyead of 6mm he coukd go with 6.5mm and a few air holes 20mm in diameter to allow for eventual drying of the core plywood.
      I was wondering too about the moisture just sitting there, leaching into the hull laminate and eventually causing osmosis issues adjacent to the wet structural members.

    Something to think about: Weather! You know how things slowdown in Denmark during the winter. If you are seriously considering moving to the USA you might do well to consider moving to FL or one of the warmer Southern states where you can work on finishing the boat without the weather slowing things down.

      God no. Cats are fucking awful. More realistically the pregnancy would be the end of the cruising dreams for Mads. At least for a couple decades lol

    • @RealityIsTheNow
      @RealityIsTheNow 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mitchell bates It's called real life. And it's entirely conjectural. Calm yourself. There are two extremely common things that get in the way of cruising: Family commitments and health problems. First, people keep putting it off and putting it off because ooops! Pregnant!...then two decades of diapers, screaming, and teen angst later it's ooops! College tuition for the kids. Maybe we'll be smartest to just wait till retirement. Then it's ooops! Now we're old with health problems and it's just not feasible anymore. Lots of boats for sale, fitted out to go...because the owner got old and developed health problems and that's the end of it. Like I said...real life. It's why the Pardey's are famous for saying, "Go small. Go simple. Go now."
