Judd's camp notes are really the diamond for Purple Daily content. I question his camp noted many times...and ended up getting egg in my face.

JJ has great infrastructure for a rookie QB. I wouldn’t be shocked if he starts at some point but I also won’t be shocked if Darnold looks great in practice.
Darnold will no doubt look good in practice. His athletic traits have allowed him to carve a role as a backup despite being a poor NFL QB.
His lack of mental and emotional toughness are why he will continue to collapse in games. Coaching won’t help him perform under pressure, not see ghosts, and not turn the ball over. He has shown us who he is over six seasons.
And the sad thing is this fanbase knows it. They would be trolling another fanbase planning to start Sam Darnold. But because he wears Purple there is this collective insanity about him becoming great.

Ryan Wright lost weight to be the kickoff kicker. I heard somewhere that the kicker was involved in 40-ish percent of tackles on kickoffs in the XFL

Sam Darnold can tell him exactly why he shouldn't rush into starting.

You guys talk about Darnold having a Gino Smith, Baker Mayfield, type season. I will take this another level, we can all agree that "On Paper" the defense has improved! I believe, with this team, with O'Connell, coaching, Darnold could have, dare I say, a Case Keenum, Jeff George, or a Randall Cunningham season!
One thing about McCarthy sitting for a year is it takes pressure off the coaching staff, also leaves options on the table if Darnold is a mega bust. I just love the situation the team is in as a whole, and it shows that the management and coaches know how to keep there jobs for time being.
It doesn’t remove the pressure. It just delays it and makes 2025 that much more intense as KOC will be on the hot seat after another losing season with zero idea if McCarthy is any good. Since they wasted a year of his rookie deal for no reason at all.
And that is only if Darnold somehow progresses to serviceable after years of proving to be less than that.
If Darnold proves to be who he has always been then the pressure from fans, media, and ownership will become overwhelming. All of you delay finding out folks would suddenly be begging for the rookie and complaining about the terrible decision to sit him. Instead of allowing McCarthy to play those first few games of the season with an opportunity to grow and improve, make some mistakes, lose some games while still having hope about the overall season and future he would be thrust into the middle of a losing season with incredible pressure to be great immediately and somehow salvage the season. Any mistakes would be magnified tenfold because of the situation.

He is CLEARLY not ready in any fashion, and it would be a .001% chance if he happens todo DECENT if he starts at all. Look at what the packers did with love, and look how he turned out.
Just remember, the Chiefs traded UP 17 spots for Mahomes just to purposely sit him on the bench for the entirety of his rookie season.
Darnold isn’t in the same stratosphere as Smith. That would be the situation if Cousins had re-signed. Then everyone would expect McCarthy to sit. Darnold is a journeyman backup on his 4th team. Athletic traits with zero feel for the NFL game. Sees ghosts, panics, and turns the ball over. He isn’t the answer. It is a problem heading into 2025 if McCarthy is unable to win the job.

Risner is a one position back up, but since Brandel can play every position besides center, he would likely move from LG to the injured persons position and Risner would play LG.
I thought Risner could play left or right guard, and has also played centre.
This is what the coaching staff has said about the rookie QB will probably sit and learn. So I cool with that.
Risner can play center, left guard or his natural position of right guard. Great depth add (back) to the team. Glad we got him. SKOL Vikings!
I think the Risner signing opens up an extra roster spot for the defense, (e.g. only need 9 O Line), which could help protect someone like Andre Carter, Gabe Murphy, or McGlothern from the PS.
I kinda thought having a QB named JJ to go with a receiver whom the fans call JJ would be fun but so far it’s pretty much just served to confuse me in the TH-cam comment section.

I like the Risner addition, and yes it has helped quite down the interior line chatter Mackey. Are there any rumors or whispers about an interior defensive line addition?

CJ Ham should be the offensive captain. Everybody would respect that.
If KOC decides that starting Darnold all year is the best thing for JJ’s development, I’m all for it. I think it does potentially push back the “Super Bowl window” by a year, though. Would love to see JJ play at least half the year to get adjusted to the league, then come into year 2 ready to play at a high level. If he doesn’t play meaningful snaps this year, it’s hard to see that happening in year 2. Either way, they can’t rush the decision. Play him when he’s ready and not a second before!

Jeff George probably had one of the top 5 arms in NFL history. His attitude and temper tantrums did him in.
JJ probably gets more snaps working with the second team than he would getting left-over snaps that Mullins is getting. More repetitions to work on his foot work, release points, playbook, etc.
This is absolutely the reason. It has zero to do with depth chart. Darnold and McCarthy are getting the snaps and coaching. There is no chance unless McCarthy is an absolute bust or Darnold is traded that Mullens is QB2 week one.
Judd is just super scared about finding out if the rookie is good and wants to wrap him in bubble wrap. He sees what he wants to support his fear. Judd is seeing ghosts just like Darnold.
Coller has become the voice of reason on Darnold and McCarthy as PD has jumped the shark.
Even more, during the season the back up is practicing the specific weekly game plan, whereas the QB3 can still practice technique and the whole playbook.
Great episode! Vikings fans should be on board with the Sam Darnold QB1 for 2024. Nothing against JJ McCarthy, but so good for the long haul.

Seems like everyone is counting sam darnold out. What if he comes out and throws 47 tds and 12 picks. 4800 yards and leads us to confenence title or sb? That would stir the pot up and is at least 5% possible. Maybe 10%

Kirk was even worse than Darnold in his first 3 years.
The only way JJ doesn't start week one is if Kevin promised Darnold a certain amount of playing time. I feel certain JJ will be ready week one, if he's not fine sit him ,but I doubt that will be the case. JJ is the future you play him as soon as he's ready.
I think you will be 100% wrong. In fact I think it's more likely that JJ never starts in 2024, than starting in week 1.

A rookie QB will throw interceptions as he is trying to figure out what throws he can get away with and what throws he can't. I think JJ definitely needs some experience and i would rather have him figure this out this season not next year.
Unfortunately, Darnold absolutely will throw interceptions. He isn’t a good QB. There is a reason that he is on his 4th team. He has shown us who he is the past six seasons. Believe him. He is a fringe guy just like Dobbs and Mullens. Where he was drafted six years ago is meaningless.

Start Mullins this season. He’s a gunslinger, like Favre.. JJ Jefferson will have a huge season! Throws an occasional INT but so will Darnold or McCarthy
Vikings handling of risner is weird as hell ... he was easily our best iol last year I don't see how he loses the competition unless vikings just hand the job to brandel because they want him Starting after overpaying him in free agency
I like how almost everyone has an opinion about "when JJ should start" without even getting to training camp. IMO it's a simple decision. He should start when his play level is equal to the other QBs on the roster. I say equal because he was drafted to be qbotf so he should get the tie breaker.
I'd argue the point is when there is no way that they would pull him, even if he had a bad start/patch. The point of no going back - which is probably further along than the tiebreak.

the stat on QBs entering into good situations is very interesting. however, i'm curious about the stat on QBs entering into the WORST situation. in that category, i would bet darnold is at least in the top 20 all-time

You would most likely sign him or franchise him. But remember, Case Keenum did the same thing for the Vikings and they let him go and he's done nothing since.
If Darnold has a really good year and leads the Vikes to the playoffs he should be the projected starter for 2025.
JJ will get his chance to bond and work with Jefferson before he ever has to start for the Vikings. Why are people so concerned? We all knew that Darnold was starting so obviously he should have as many reps with the starting receivers. Calm down people.

In his case. George should have been brought back for a season 3 of development.
May have shortened or had no effect.
But Culpepper lack of looking off defenders lead to Moss trade and declining ability post knee.

We have to remember that he has 3 years before he is as old as Penix. We have time
Mccarthy is getting more reps as the QB3 than he would as QB2, and the plan has always been to have him sit for a year, just like Mahomes. I'm not saying he's Mahomes, but KC didn't know he was Mahomes either, otherwise he would have started over Smith his rookie year.
In addition, since there's no plan to start him, why confuse the starters learning the styles of 2 different QBs? Darnold is the starter, so the starters will work with him. Next year, they'll work with McCarthy. It's that simple and obvious.

If Darnold leads them to the playoffs and they even win a playoff game he should be re-signed and go into camp next summer as qb1. Do I think it will happen? No, I think the Vikes go 7-10 at best.
It all depends on where they think JJ is on "the program". If they feel like JJ is ready to start, I think they let Darnold walk. If JJ isn't developing for some reason, then you franchise tag or sign Darnold to a longer term deal.

Jj is going to be the third string qb this year. They don’t want to play him too early. Only way they want him to play is if the qb’s get injured. They don’t want him to get thrown in before he’s ready.

The odds of Darnold becoming more than a fringe starter are almost zero. 4000 yards and 30 TDs are possible. Along with 25 turnovers and a 6-11 record. Darnold is a journeyman backup on his 4th team for a good reason.
If McCarthy doesn’t win the job then the Vikings will be in trouble heading into the 2025 season.

I’m glad it is Judd giving the camp report and not Mackey, Declan or Thor who would be too busy polishing McCarthy’s bust for Canton to give an objective review of how Darnold and McCarthy are doing.
Darnold is going to light it up this season and this time next year you’re going to be complaining that the Kwesi didn’t have the foresight to lock him up for more than 1 year.

Boone absolutely trashed the idea of a proven fringe talent like Darnold suddenly becoming good just because they were a high draft pick. (While Mackey nodded his head and agreed with the entire rant.)
Darnold is who he is. He looks good in practice but cannot translate it to the games since pressure breaks him. McCarthy will be the starting QB no later than week 7.

McCarthy will see the field when he has checked all the boxes in what O'Connell has described as a detailed developmental plan. Likely next year.

You just paid JJ the highest amount of money in league history for a non QB. And the first year of a 4 year contract is a throw away just because you want to handle your future QB with kid gloves. I am sure McCarthy is just going to get a world of insight watching Sam Darnold be a QB he has never ever been in the NFL. I guess we will just cross our fingers and hope at least 2 times a year JJ is not on the bad end of a Kirby Joseph Knee shot from Sam Darnold. Then what? You have an entire training camp to get him ready.
it’s a 4 year extension so this year doesn’t count on the 4 years. So we have Jefferson for 5 years.

You aren’t wrong about the incredible fear in this fanbase causing people to root for a journeyman backup to suddenly become better than he has proven to be over six years rather than rooting for the rookie to show out and become a stud. They’d rather delay the outcome for a year, despite zero evidence to support the idea that sitting has any value to the development of a rookie. Maybe if he was behind an HOF QB, sure.
But the fear driving the projections is palpable.
Only thing I’ll note is that it is a four year extension. Jefferson is under contract five years through 2028 (with a void year in 2029 to smooth out the signing bonus over six seasons).
