    In France, people used to think that I was french, and when they realized that I could speak Spanish they thought I was Spanish. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But they weren't rude when they found out that I was from Latin America, on the contrary, they were all the time asking me about our culture and stuff. In the US is other story, tho.

      A lot of times things like these are a reality check for Americans (as in USA) and even Americans of Latino descent who even take offense in being called white if they actually are, a lot of these people they label as non white, figures like Pedro Pascal, Alanna Ubach, Rita Moreno, Diego Boneta, Guillermo del Toro, Bob Menendez, Luís Miguel (who's parents are actually from Spain/Italy) etc, if any of these people lived anywhere in Europe (and wasn't famous obviously), they would be seen as natives Europeans, my grandma herself was green eyed, light brown hair, pale af skin, parents were fresh off the boat from Spain, they were basically white Europeans but sometimes she still got sort of...."kicked" from the white club, rhetorically speaking, because her last surname was Pérez and Americans can't grasp the idea that Hispanic names are originally from Europe.
      I also have the theory that it was white Hispanic's fault to a degree this phenomenon even came to be, a lot of white Hispanic celebrities back then (particularly of Spanish/Spain ancestry) would change their names to seem more apealing to American WASPs ( people like "Rita Hayworth", actually called Margarita Carmen Cansino, "Martin Sheen" a.k.a Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez or other who did the same) basically helping consolidate this false idea that Hispanics can't possibly be European.

      The Latins are the people of Southern Europe The Italians The Spanish The Portuguese The French and the Romanians. The Latins are the Mediterranean people of Europe. If you're not European you're not Latin/o.

    • @Foc4ccin4
      @Foc4ccin4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +332

      The latins are not people from southern europe.
      The original latins were the tribe that founded Rome. But Italy had plenty of tribes even before the latins settled in. So did France, Spain, Portugal and Romania (dacian for example).
      The Latins you speak of are only people who speak romance language. But language doesn't equal common ethnicity.

    • @goolag6536
      @goolag6536 8 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Foc4ccin4
      Do Americans realize that the original Latins (Latinos) are the Italians?
      The Italians are the one and only, real Latinos under Cultural and Racial heritage.
      And to a higher extend, of language adoption, so are the French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanians, aka (White) Europeans.
      The French are racially Celts (Gauls), but linguistically latinized under the Roman Empire
      The Spanish are racially Celts (Iberians), but linguistically latinized under the Roman Empire
      The Portuguese are racially Celts (Lusitanians), but linguistically latinized under the Roman Empire
      The Romanians are racially Wlachs (Dinaro-Mediterranean shepherds) latinized under the Byzantine Empire.
      As for the Americans...
      The people from Latin America (North/Central/South America), such as Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Puerto-Rico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Chile, Haiti, Peru, Paraguay, Panama, Colombia, Argentina, etc.
      Those are definitely NOT Latinos, and there's nothing Latin about them.
      They are just a bunch of Native Americans (Amerindians), Mestizos and Mestizos, playing identity theft, because the US racial census, made it that way.
      The Italians are the only real Latinos, as they started the Latin culture during the Roman empire, and no one else is.
      In another words:
      Latinos are White-Europeans. NOT Brown-Americans

      School districts use info in order to determine the necessary programs needed, track progress for low-income students "at risk" of dropping out, and promote opportunities more fairly (not just the higher income/lighter skinned students). Its usually all in an effort for equity. But at jobs it has to do with equal opportunity and catching trends, in case one would have to provide evidence of discrimination against minorities.

      I had to pretend I was white growing up in America just because it was easier than having to play 20 questions on why I wasn't really Latino to both Americans and Latinos. Are you adopted? Are you really Latino? What's your last name? What part of Mexico is that from? Are you legal?
      In America they try to press this belief that where you are from, where you grew up, or the color of your skin is more important than your accomplishments. I've lived in the south and its sad because there are people from both sides who try to bridge the gap and make this a thing of the past. There was an older pastor who tried to hand out cards to welcome Latinos to his church when we went to a Mexican mart. People just ignored him when he offered them cards.
      My family was so terrified of interacting with Americans because of how they treated us on first arrival that over time, it was easier for people to just use my Americanized name instead of my Spanish one. There were times I remember going to restaurants, and a waitress asked me if I was looking for my parents. Look on her face when I dashed over to my mom who was darker than me.
      People are people no matter where you are, my advice?
      Get to know them before you judge them. If they treat you like shit? You keep your guard up and you avoid them as best you can.
      Some people are worth giving a chance, Most aren't.
      Its heartbreaking that in America I had to learn when to pretend to be White and when to 'act' as Latino.
      But hey, at least I'm not starving or dead like some back in my home country.
      Questions to add.
      "What part of Mexico is that?"
      "You're not really Latino though, right?"
      "Where did you learn to speak Spanish so well?"
      Examples of possible situations.
      1. The Double standard. - "Let's not try so hard", Answers the phone, talks to person in Spanish before answering you in English.
      2. Assuming when in a group of Latinos. "Oh you speak Spanish? Why didn't you say so?"
      3. The Safety net about talking bad about you - This one kind of changed because when I was in school in America we were not allowed to speak our native language because the teachers thought we were talking about them. - "Mira ese gringo, tiene la nariz tan grande", "No soy gringo, y eso fue necesario" Cue the awkward silence and embarrassment proceeded by either acting like they were only joking or they are deeply sorry.

    As a white latina born, raised and currently living in Sweden (family from Uruguay), I can relate so much to this.
    Even as a spanish teacher I get questioned if I learned spanish in school because I don't look latina.
    It's also not weird for people to stare when they hear me speak spanish or ask a latino/a who looks "right" if I speak proper spanish.
    As a teen I hated that I did not look more latina than I do, the crazy thing is, I still don't look Swedish so people often assume I am from Bosnia for some reason.

So the next time my friend filled in Latina and had no problem so she kept marking Latina, until one time another lady told her she was white, not Latina XD.

      manzanaresantonio There are a bunch of people of Hispanic origin who share a darker skin tone because they live predominately on the equator. Zoe Saldana is a famous example. Also, saying that "true" Latinos are only those who are descendants of the Roman Empire is incredibly wrong and prejudiced. (In fact, it rather evokes the thought of another "true" race, that of the falsely named Aryan one.) Besides, "Latino" originates as a Latin word, not American, and was in turn adopted by the Spanish language in America. Ultimately, people can be what they choose to identify as - you choosing that for them only makes the prejudiced bigot.

    • @LivelyJaded
      @LivelyJaded 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luis Alves What you stated about the Spaniards is true, about them bringing the Latin culture and I will accept my mistake in that. However, you misconstrued what I said entirely. I did not say that Latin Americans suddenly decided to call themselves by these terms; far from it as the U.S. typically came up with those two terms to more or less, bunch us all up into categories and it was made official in 1997 (I believe). All I simply stated was what Latino/a and Hispanic meant and why they were different from one another as many do not know this. (And typically, if you are not in the U.S. you don't really need to).
      But I did not know about the term Lusitanic, so thank you for that bit of information.

    • @danielchalabi658
      @danielchalabi658 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @LibsDrawingMuseum because many people in the US believe that only Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Scandinavian and a few other groups are white. Many Americans wouldn't see Portuguese, Spaniards, Greeks and people of the Mediterranean as white. And even at an official level, in documents for example, they classify people as "white white" or white-hispanic etc. They have an obsession with race and for them being white is almost like belonging to VIP group, sad.

      ***** maybe,but there are very few black-skinned people in my country and there is white and brown latinos in the middle class and the poor one so if you poor here,you are poor,though there is a little more of the darker skinned in the poor class,but since the economy and everything is shite here,is hard to get a better life if there are little job opportunities,and a big part of the population is middle-low class,so most people worry about unemployment,education,malnutrition,corruption,crimes,robberies,femicides,domestic violence,etc. and not much about the skin color because most people suffer from that (especially femicides and violence,they happen in every social status) :/

      Being Mexican doesn't always equate having an Accent ! Mexicans have been in The United States for a long time . generation's . For many Mexican Americans English is their first language therefore they do not have an Accent . There is nothing wrong with having an Accent if you have one but thinking or stating you don't sound Mexican is stereotyping. Remember The States from Texas to California belonged to Mexico once so many Hispanics of Mexican Descent never crossed any borders .

    I'm a white Mexican and 2 times when visiting the US, people have asked me if i'm polish... it's really weird to me that both times people thought of that specific country to make the relation. I wonder if i have polish roots.
    Anyway, once at a halloween party in the US, i just put on a sombrero and a poncho (things i actually had in my wardrobe, not party stuff, real handmade from Cholula)... people got angry at me for being racist, i was like "I'm mexican". They thought i was lying. I felt the racism, now i cannot enjoy my culture because i don't look like someone from my culture (according to them). That kind of shit makes me hate americans a little bit.

    Latino
    For well-educated people who are native speakers of a Latin language (French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, and others not so well-known), a Latino/Latina is anyone, regardless of race or nationality, whose language and culture is mainly from the Latin world. The Latin world is composed of the Latin-European countries and the places around the globe that they colonized and left a real strong mark.
    The Latin European lands became Latin when The Roman Empire took over them for centuries giving them its culture. These new Latin lands did the same to the lands they conquered in America, Africa and Asia.
    In the U.S.A. (where global education is basic) the word took a wrong turn meaning only one of these three things: 1)the people from Latin-America; 2) All Spanish-Speaking people; and 3)Pure or mixed Native-American people who speak Spanish even when their customs may still be very indigenous. Sadly, ignorance has allowed many people (even people from Latin America) to believe the U.S.form.

      Il Zm The struggle is that people in the U.S. seem to believe that the term "Hispanic" refers to race when that is inaccurate. Rather, it is a culture (with many sub-cultures) made up of diverse races, ethnic backgrounds and nationalities. In addition, we are united by the fact we speak the same language, but even then, we have varying dialects/accents. So contrary to the mainstream narrative, that the media/society (in the U.S) likes to perpetrate portraying hispanics as all Mexican, brown with bowl cuts, there is a large white population throughout Latin America and Spain. Being said, to answer your question, white hispanics are put in a racial limbo because, in the eyes of the U.S., they are not considered white. However, if they were seen in public without anyone aware of their Hispanic background, they would be considered white just as any other "American" . You see the struggle that Joanna had on the checkbox for what race she was, and the way her colleagues were perplexed by her being white and Hispanic. Hope that answered your question.

      Juan Acosta Ah, y sobre lo último que has dicho -muy dolorosamente cierto-, también ocurrió con irlandeses e italianos. Eran vistos como blancos -aunque muchos italianos directamente no, por ser sureños- hasta que abrían la boca. Y eso al final fue virando hasta que se consideraron yanquis de primera, y por tanto, blancos.
      Pero me da a mí que esta vez no ocurrirá lo mismo. Latinoamérica compone un grupo étnico enorme, y aunque una parte de ellos sean blancos, la grandísima mayoría son mexicanos mestizos, que acabarán fagocitando a los blancos anglos. El análisis lo estoy haciendo desde la perspectiva tan etnocéntrica de un yanqui y joder, es difícil.

    Hilarious! Why can't more people understand that Hispanic/Latin American is not a race? In Latin America there are people of European (white), African (black), and Amerindian descent and in many countries (eg. Mexico), the majority is of mixed race (in the case of Mexico: indigenous and European). Of course there are white Latin Americans who are purely of European descent (eg. their ancestors may have all come from Spain). To say that all Latino people look one way is like saying that all Americans look one way, which certainly is not true. Ethnic diversity exists in Latin America just as it exists in the USA!

    • @ViniBoneto

      +Ethan Burg In fact, ancestors of "caucasian latinos" don't came only from spain but also from other european countries as well. Here in Brazil, portuguese, italians and germans were the three bigger european imigrations in numbers. Spaniards come only in fourth :D

    • @ethandanielburg6356
      @ethandanielburg6356 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. Latinos of European ancestry don't all trace their lineage to Spain. I just gave Spain as an example of one European country. That said, Europeans (and for that matter, people in general) from many different ethnicities have immigrated to Latin America over the years and have contributed to the diversity of many Latin American countries.

    • @caraqueno
      @caraqueno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Ethan! I understand where you were coming from. I wanted to point out that Americans often see Mexico as only biracial and as a buzzword for all of Latin America. By the way, after having lived in Venezuela and traveled throughout Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and part of Colombia, the stereotypes run both ways. Latin Americans, generally, view blonde, blue-eyed people as "Americans", without regard to the ethnic diversity that is the United States.
      We, Americans, very much inherited the Anglo-Saxon construct of race and that only the "White" race was fit to achieve greatness in the world. That's on them!

      +Mr. LA Tours You are right and I agree with you, well Mexico recieved many European, Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants...but I don't think that much to make a difference...European a little bit, but Middle Eastern and Asian not enough to make such a large percentage of the population. Mexico has almost 130 million people and Middle Eastern and Asian probably all make 2 million altogether, and I'm being generous with the number. That's not even 2% of the population. Mexico is probably like 60% Mestizo, some sources say 80% but I think the number is a bit too high and they probably included people who are mostly indigenous or mostly european in the figure (castizos, indomestizos, etc). Then after that I think it's a tie between Whites and Indigenous and then after that it's the Blacks then Asians who make the largest percentage of the population. However I will agree with you that most Mexicans have at least some Black Subsaharan African blood in them. like somewhere in between 4 and 10%. I read an article about that. I even did a DNA test in 23andme .com and I have roughly 6%.

      This is like hating the word "America" because some European dude's name was Amerigo and the whole continent was named after him. Or saying that we don't speak Spanish but Castilian. It's absurd really.

    • @steven930922
      @steven930922 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Latin isn't a native language anywhere anymore, so I don't understand your point. The Italian language however is less than 150 years old. But it seems that you don't know much about the Roman Empire either.
      Now, we are called Latin America since the XIX century because we speak a language that descends from Latin (those being the romance languages; read up on that). We are called Latin America for that reason. It doesn't have anything to do with Italy at all.
      For the record, you want to write "Colombian" instead of "Columbian" if you don't want them to be pissed. I assume you have lived in the States for a very long time but that's no excuse.

    • @juanjoseph
      @juanjoseph 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Steven Arias Some linguists would argue that Spanish, Portuguese and Italian are XXth century Latin. :P
      The term latino is dumb because it segregates all other latin cultures. I mean, a spaniard, a french, an italian can't call themselves latins in the US without confusing americans. It is very annoying to be confused with southamericans.
      The correct term for South and Central America is Hispanoamérica, since there are other latin languages in Canada.

    • @steven930922
      @steven930922 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Linguists know that Romance languages descend from Latin, but they're not Latin. I'd like to know about those linguists you mention because they clearly don't know what they're talking about.
      Anyway, I think you're going with prescriptivism here. I can't put up with this kind of correctness [sic].
      The term "Latino" might've been absurd back in the XIX century, but it's now known worldwide and I doubt it's going away any time soon. The term has been around for almost three centuries and it managed to be relevant up to this day and therefore it was lexicalised. Many other regions have been named "Latin regions" but they were renamed over the years. Latin America, however, has evolved; it isn't something that merely describes the romance-speaking portion of America; it evolved and it's now an identity, one that belongs to those who live there.
      That being said, how does it segregate other Latin cultures? Is there something such as Latin Culture? As far as I'm concerned Latin American countries have more in common among them than romance-speaking countries do in Europe. Perhaps you're reading too much into it.
      Now, the term Hispanoamérica can be as valid as Latin America. There's no "one is more appropiate than the other" (unless you come from Brazil). My point is that language changes and you should stop assuming things. Instead, see the context and/or do some research: why is it called Latin America? Why isn't Canada there? Where does the whole thing come from? Those kind of questions are the ones you should ask yourself before making an statement on something you're barely knowledgeable about.

      +Frank Jaegar you are wrong boy, you must study a lot , for example in the library of the congress, wikipedia, metapedia, yes, metapedia the web encyclopedia of the white stormfront in usa , Canada, Europe, there you will find that 40 percent of the population of latinoamerica was Caucasian , because Latin america was created,colonized , populated and conquest by European powers after the conquest and defeat of the American native civilizations, cultures and nations, from the 16 century until 20 century millions of people from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and also Britain, Scotland, Netherlands, Sweden, germany and other countries of Europe settled there , like military, clergymen, bureaucrats , tradesmen, peasantry, settlers, and others like these, also the Europeans arrived o went to the Americas with millions of Africans slaves, the difference between north America and central and south America and the Caribbean is more cultural , social, philosophical, economical and also racial because in Latin America the multicultural and interracial ties are the law from the beginning of the colonization because like in Europe the people from the south and Mediterranean areas of Europe and also of the continental Europe are more multicultural and multiracial and brown , yes than you , fucking people of the British islands or the Scandinavian peninsula or Germany and the black forest , the Italians, Greeks, Spanish and Portuguese are more brown than you little pinky and also they have Celtic and Greek and more Roman roots than you and Germanic also but with a mixture of phoenician, Carthaginian, black, Arab , Jew, Mongolic , Slavic races and others, Latin America is more rich, complicated, multi-diverse society and if you don t like what i say or you don t care you can study in the net, in the libraries, the public schools, the universities, the books from scientist, historians and politicians of the Anglo Saxon world from the 16 century until now and they will improve a little your understanding of this little world called earth...

    In Arizona, some white people talk about Latino immigrants in front of me because they don't see me as one of them. I'm the "whiter Latino." No, I'm supposedly not really one of them, but what the heck. So they say all the racist crap you might imagine white people would say in Arizona about immigrants. But I can't call myself a "white Latino" because then my Latino friends think I'm putting distance between them and me as my brown brothers and sisters, and I'd then sound like I'm trying to use my "white privilege" which I suppose works when white cops don't stop my car and beat me up. But when I got into a fender bender because a guy hit my car from behind, sending my car onto that of an African-American male's car, the outraged African-American driver came out and started shouting at me thinking I'd hit his car on purpose, and I got my cell phone out and called 911. He started screaming at me, "Oh, calling the cops, the white thing to do!" Man, I was just calling 911, not the cops, because there had been an accident and he thought I was a "white guy" calling the cops on him, and I'm just a Latin guy who's been hit from behind. Shoot, that's my white privilege experience. I've never defended racism of any kind, but apparently people read me as white, so wtf? I can't win.

      I call my white skin "my camouflage". I love seeing people's expressions when I start speaking Spanish. It's even beter when my "Latino" looking brother is with me because he can't speak it. So when people start talking to him he just looks at me because he wants a translation.
      I even had a while guy from Maine tell me I didn't understand the "plight of the Latino community" beter than he did, because he learned about it in college... Nah, I just grew up in a Latino household, with a Latino family and in a Latino community... While speaking Spanish.... I have no idea about the "plight of the Latino community"...

      +Seymour Butts No, guys, there are black mexicans! It's shockingly impressive that not even Mexicans know about Costa Chica, it's full of black mexicans! Full, guys, full! They are "mixed", sure, but they still keep the phenotype that people denominate "black": tight, voluminous, pitch-black curly hair, really dark skin (there's where it's easy to see the racial mixing, their skin tone changes from medium dark brown, to dark brown... haven't seen yet a truthfully black looking skin like the ones you see from some american tourists), tendency to easily built muscle, rounded nose, very little body hair, round eyes, lot's of melanin everywhere... but a considerable percentage of them are short xD Indigenous people from here sure are short!
      The Costa Chica region expands from southern east Guerrero to southern west Oaxaca; and actually there are towns composed solely from black descendants! They're a vast majority in there; there's even very interesting and funny stories on how the black slaves that the spaniards brought to Guerrero participated in the Independence, (because here they got their freedom too, ya' know?). Just read the statistic by INEGI, there are aprox. 400,000 black mexicans; and the majority of them live in Guerrero, and then, in Oaxaca.
      Maybe it's because I'm from Acapulco, and here I grew up interacting with a lot of black-descent people since, here you'll see them pretty often in the east marginal zones from the city (which collides with Costa Chica); or in the coast of Costa Grande. My niece herself is a mulata.
      There are black mexicans, I'll stand for the acknowledgement of the dear " negros costeños" xD

      +Seymour Butts Well, then I trully hope you have a delightful journey ^^ Just be sure to choose a nice and safe town; and bring medicine if you get dizzy easily, the roadways in Oaxaca and Guerrero have a fame of their own O.O
