Art Fein does NOT look annoyed. He is totally amused. Hey, it's his show! If he didn't love this segment he could have left it on the floor of the editing room. God bless him for keeping it. In fact, I've added it as a favorite and placed it in my "Gospel" folder.
Teaching is a gift. Had Phil been my math teacher perhaps the class wouldn't have given me such stomach aches. One day about 25 years ago when I wanted to be a singer, Phil spent a long time explaining to me how to use the face as a musical instrument. It is a fine moment in my memory. The words he spome on this video are very true. It was about the invention of the lp and 45 players and selling the record players and the owners of CBS and RCA being the first not about the music.
You know he's right. Up until the late '50's records were purchased at Furniture Stores. That's also where you bought your record players. Furniture Stores are where you recorded your songs. H.C Spiers(the guy that discovered Robert Johnson) owned a Furniture Store. People would come to his store to record. He'd get paid $5.00 for every person he referred to the record company as a good prospect for recording. I didn't know Victor & Okeh were furniture manufacturers. TH-cam educates too!
Thank God for the furniture companies! We have all this great music that has influenced generation after generation (including Phil Alvin and the Blasters) because of them!
Lee Allen is a legend - Paul Body is lesser known but he was the insanely bad-ass drummer with the greatest LA band of all time imo THE SHEIKS OF SHAKE who were peers of THE BLASTERS.
Imagine being stuck in a car, going cross country, in July, with no air conditioning with Phil and David Lee Roth. It would be one hell of a trip that you'd never want to relive. Both are a force of nature.
Art Fein seems annoyed because someone else is smarter than he is. Ya know, I really respect how Art has been able to get amazing guests for nearly twenty five years. Art...LET THE MAN TALK!
@therealroadstar ... true, but not really "digging up"... googled his name, clicked on the first link and read a wikipedia article. all in all, 24 seconds wouldn't constitute digging up.
Disliking math is a definate handicap. There's is a lot of connected knowledge that comes from the love of math. For example, you'll never become a fabulous musician if you hate math. I hate it that I hate math.
It's a great rant, but my brother, who is heavily involved in broadcasting, recording, and collecting and restoring old radios and phonographs, says Phil is full of it. There are some small kernels of truth, but too much generalizing.
If your brother says that, he's the one who is full of it. Phil is stating the facts. You can verify them with a few minutes research in the history of the recording industry. I'll help you and your brother out... Paramount Records was a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Chair Company....
Phil Alvin is one of the most intelligent people I know of. This is a pleasure to watch.
Phil's passion is infectious about music history. Thanks for making this content available.

I LOVE this so much I put this "lesson" on my radio show ;o)
This is incredible! :-) Phil Alvin talking and teaching, just as powerful as his music making! :-)
But the ponytail, incredible ;-)
This is fucking priceless.

I don't know how you came up with that scenario but I salute you just the same.
They’re both LA legends.
Masters of their craft.
They live well worn lives.
Right on Phil!!!
Apple owns the music industry now, hmm iPod and the iPhone.. Phil you're a genius.
And isn’t music SO much better now, because of this?
I never knew my man Phil had a pony tail!

Art...LET THE MAN TALK!
iPod = Apple Music
This is pretty damn close to how musicians have been historically cheated and that it isn't literally accurate all the way is irrelevant...metaphor.
