I got there in the same number of guesses with very different route that involved lots of guess-work.
eVENT > EArLY > EPOcH > lOOPS > GROUP. I was skeptical of the E early on, so I left it first to probe it. When I got the green O twice, I figured I should go with it, plus the double yellow P, and then assumed the R was the lie from EArLY. With those three assumptions and hard mode, I was left with GROUP. I am not sure how many other words would have fit, so I think I just got lucky.
