    Use flies a lot in Idaho. Up on Lake Pend O'Reille in North Idaho, there's a special fly used to catch Gerrard Trout/ Kamploops. Great flies to catch 20# trout. Also use flies to go after landlocked salmon as well. They use the large flashers up there, also pull it behind a planer to get it away from the boat. The small dodgers are one of my "go-to's". And yes, just pull them straight behind, we use 1/2 - 1 oz banana trolling weights to get 'em down.

    I bought a tube fly kit, and some marabou. I'm tying the marabou tube flies to save money on hoochies for kokanee.

    Great Videos: Keep up the great work. Cal, have you ever tried one of the swarm flashers? If so please reply with a link to that video.

    I started using trolling flys (Jay Fair's) at Eagle Lake. Think they are the best thing up there. I have not used them much other places although I did lose a big fish at the boat in Davis a few months ago on one. Think I will have to use them a little more. So when you guys going to give the River a try for salmon? Think they might finally be here. Hasn't always been easy but got fish 5 of 6 trips last week.

    Hi Cal; I want to troll these flies, sub surface with down riggers; to start using no dodger, wiggle disc, etc.. my question is how do I get the fly to spool out behind the boat with just the drag from the fly ?

      You have to get some line on the water..... then you can sweep the rod forward as you thumb the reel......

    I have braided line on all my reels. Can u please tell me, how many feet of fluorcarbon or monofilment I should use in front of the 3 or 4 feet lead core? And how much lbs this line should have🙏🏻

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I’m using a short section of Lc I go with 14 feet of 15 lb mono and then a 30-40 inch fluorocarbon leader that is 8-10 lb

      @@FHSTackle thank you for your answer!!! So need to use fluorcarbon for that?

    I started trolling flies in 2011 when I built my boat using very small buggers that I made with no discs
    Guys fighting for space on the rivers can have it
    I’d rather be out on the reservoirs where there is hardly anyone around

    I have some steelhead marabou jigs I’ve never used since I’ve yet to fish for steelhead. Do you think they would be effective trolling for trout? I’m thinking the weight of the jig head would adversely affect the action.

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would not assume that...I thought the same thing about flies weighted in various ways....You just don't know until you run them....You can tell aside of the boat if it has the sort of action that instills confidence in you!....

    What color trolling flys do you use throughout the day? I just got into trolling flys and I’m trying to work out the kinks on choosing the right color for the right time of day

    • @jw04429
      @jw04429 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the point of the "fly' is to imitate the fishes natural food, whether that is actually bugs and insects or bait fish and worms, etc. So match the color of the fly to whatever the fish are actually eating, which IMO is far more important than how the time of day would affect the color selection. At times when target fish are not naturally feeding, I have found the fly color is more about agitating the fish rather than trying to entice them to feed.

      @@jw04429 yesss we have smelt in one of the lakes I fish, accurately imitate smelt and you've got fish in the boat

    • @leomdk939

      I've always felt that matching the color of the baitfish makes more sense than matching the lighting. The baitfish don't change colors based on the time of day, so why should our lures?
