I kitesurf now as well but there is nothing like that feeling of blasting along on a windsurfer trying to get every ounce of speed out of the sail and the board. The connection you have to the sail is much closer than to the kite.
@@s2oooo I mainly kite hydrofoil and although it is my favourite water based activity of all time, you are totally disconnected from the water and wind compared to windsurfing. How fast you go just depends to a large part on your kit and how crazy you are :) On a windsurfer I remember feeling like every little adjustment I made to the sail and board made a difference.

Your RIP video from the 90's inspired me to take up windsurfing. I never really cracked it but to this day it is one of my favourite ways to spend a day. Thank you for the inspiration.
Dear Robby, Your inspired me to get into windsurfing back in the '80s. (I had a pink and red Gaastra 5.2)... And your ongoing enthusiasm brought me 'back out there', after 15 years of not windsurfing. Last week I bought windfoiling gear and had a first tough session in Hood River. Feels great to be back! Thanks for being a true inspiration.
Great comment. This video has inspired me to pull my gear out storage and back out there. Thanks Robbie. Kids are grown now so its time to get at it again. I had so much fun at the Gorge from the mid 80s to late 90s. Bettes for breakfast a session at the Hatch or Dougs then The River City Saloon for the Moe Show is he was playing that night oh and a couple Scorpions at Jack first, I worked 4 x10hrs so every weekend was long weekend so I drove down from Vancouver BC every weekend. I’m sure we crossed paths a few times. What an era to be there in.
The man, the mythe, the legend, the goat!! I saw you for the first time in Scheveningen the Netherlands in 1987. I'm still windsurfing for years and years, never went to kiting or something else, and still loving it !!!!!! Hold on for what you're doing and remember : Only a surfer know's the feeling
You’re a living legend Robbie. Have been a massive fan for close to 35 years. I remember you wrote an article about why you didn’t go fully battened. And you’re still showing your incredible skills now. My father was always the big kahuna (passed away 2 years ago). But for me you carry that spirit. Aloha & cheers from NZ🤙🤙🤙
Great video! Reminds me of the time when windsurfing was all about blasting and fun, without unnecessary technicalities. Just grab your board and sail, whatever it was and go out and have fun.
I switched to kiting because all my friends did. This reminds me how much windsurfing was. For me my most fun days on the water were windsurfing by far! I did this downwinder after tacking up to Hookipa from Kanaha... up and back! I'll never forget what a blast it was.
Amazing you can still do this. After windsurfing through my 20s, kids wrecked my back and at 40 I can't really even down-haul anymore let alone handle a gust. So glad you missed that turtle! Incredible speed. Thanks for sharing your day :-)
The one time I hit a turtle, it broke my fin off. Didn't do it on purpose, just assumed the turtle would get out of the way. Tough lesson trying to sail back in with out a fin. After that, I always gave turtles a wide berth. Awesome video, what a ride along. As a rather mediocre windsurfer, I'm amazed that Robby Naish feels more comfortable unhooked when in powerful gusts! All the windsurfing he does, must have a tremendously strong grip & arms.
Hi Robby, i was once timed at just under 30kts in a national speed event back in the 90s. How the gear has changed, great video, mistral screamer lcs carbon was my favourite board ever, and i used Ken Black cambered sails made in cornwall at the time. My favourite sail size was my KB 5.4 cam slalom. I still have the board in a bag, its worth 1 $ now !!!!! At the age of 72 I don’t sail any more , age catches up with us all, hang loose buddy. Thanks for posting the video.
Oh Robby! I missed you about a day or two on Karpathos last year - the floor was still hot where you walked! )).. After a little 20 years break I restarted with windsurfing 1 1/2 years ago. You’re a living legend Robbie, 34 yrs ago when I learned windsurfing you were my example. Aloha
Windsurfing San Francisco bay and the CA coast through the golden age of the 90s were the greatest years for me and my friends. I windsurfed from 1984 to 2016 at which time I would be almost unable to walk for a week afterward due to the enlarged bone spurs in the big toes. So I moved to Baja and learned to kiteboard at age 64, now 68 and my feet no longer hurt, it's a very relaxed kind of stoke! Learning to kite from windsurfing is tough at first because you try to over muscle it resulting in stupid launches. When you learn to totally relax and chill, hands close together on the bar, sheet out you will get it! Saw you Robby, 1987 or so in the world cup race at SF. You said hi and nodded like you knew me, that's stuck with me, thanks!
Dear Robby! I started to windsurf in 1991's summer, when I was 18. You were my first inspiration. And looking this video you still are. I'm still windsurfing, only a few times by year, but with the same passion. Fun for life!!
That video is getting me stoked to get back on the water. Spent a ton of time back in the 80’s on a Mistral Malibu and a 6.6 cambered race sail on Lake Erie. Never forget the feeling from kicking up the center board and surfing down the waves.
Mr. Naish, that was awesome. In 2017, I visited Hookipa Beach because I wanted to see surfers. Once I got there, I saw the surfers and the kitesurfers first. But it's the windsurfers that stole the show. I don't practice any of these sports but I could certainly appreciate the skill level necessary for the speed and the jumps involved. I'm sure I watched for 20 minutes straight, trying to follow one sail, then another. It was mesmerizing. I'm glad the random algorithm of TH-cam suggested this awesome video so that I had a chance to see what they saw. Thanks. .
Thanks, great footage!! The sounds and the speed bring back memories of fast board-sailing on SF Bay in the late 80s. Good to see you're still at it. May you have many more years.
Reminds me of my windsurfing days on Maui in the 80s. Needless to say the gear has changed a lot since then. Looked like so much fun I'm tempted to get into it again! Mahalo for sharing through your lens and experience Robby!
Following you since I was 15 back in 1990. Your waveriding has ever been an inspiration for me. Keep going Robby! Beside, looks like a perfect setup in this vid.
I spent 15 years Windsurfing in the San Francisco Bay, Sherman Island (about 50 miles east of SF in Fresh Water). I began around 1980 on a Windsurfer One Design. I would also Sail overpowered just to make sure I had enough Sail area because I didn't want to stop and change sails and lose 30 minutes of time. I'm 67, body is beat up with Arthritis...I remember the good times I had sailing. It reminded me of Snow Skiing on moving Moguls.
I learnt to windsurf in 1981, and ended up with a suite of boards from a Windsurfer One Design to a great Mike Davis (local surf and wave board shaper) sinker. I was around when fully battened then rotating cuff sails came in. Never particularly talented, but as a teenager and early 20s it was what I loved doing. Life, a profession and family, and I drifted away. Gave that Windsurfer to a mate a couple of years ago after no use for about 15 years (he and his kids use it!). Watching this makes me think “time to give it another go”. Thanks RN.
Love your input on gear choice and why you choose this setup. Soo often we get wrapped up in wanting the fastest or most efficent possible setups and overlook what we loose in doing so. That was what happened to me in the mid 90's going to extreme on board and sail choice. Its was blazing fast but soo technical and god help you if your luff filed with water in a 6 cam sail. I'm getting set to get back into windsurfing and no surprise I am back to watching Robby Naish to get inspired - Maholo
Hello Robby, I am from 63 as you and appreciate you for a long time. I was yesterday on the beach of Pont Mahé, Assérac Brittany, France, a good wind, force 5 or 6, and about 100 women and men having great fun with their boards. Friendly and warm greetings from south Brittany. I wish you the best, have fun !
This setup makes so much sense for us old school windsurfers who love high wind blasting in control. You're an inspiration Robbie Naish and truly stoked that you get to go out for a quick session and take the time to share it with us! Dang nab it... now I meed to go as well!! ;-)
I've done that run a couple times before back when I was younger. I don't remember going that fast though! But I do remember that it's very tiring! I'm not sure I could do it now. My favorite part of it is taking in the beauty of everything like the cobalt blue water, the flying fish, the sugar cane fields with Haleakala in the background. It's quite a trip!
Amazing speed & footage, thx for that! Developed a passion for windsurfing only recently during the pandemic, seeing people racing on the local lake and wanting to do more than the usual SUP sesh. Glad Naish is still pushing for developments in windsurf, e.g. I think the 4-in-1 board is a perfect approach, looking forward to buy one soon!
Robbie you are the MAN, my hero, I should have moved to Hawaii when I was young.... Love it here in Umhlanga but man your place is epic... Windsurfing became my passion...
Huge air at one point!! Been windsurfing for a year now and so impressed by you Robby, thanks for sharing. If you come to Boston and want to get out let me know!
Met you on a promo trip to Cologne beginning of the 80's and talked to you briefly (in German). Already a star - you were so modest and kind. I dreamt about visiting Hawaii inspired by your story and the pictures of you in Surf magazine. It took me 30 years to be able to afford it and since then coming back nearly every year.
I’m 57 and have been in awe of Mr Naish since I started windsurfing in 1986 , still windsurfing , haven’t tried kiting or foiling yet , I believe in keeping windsurfing simple , which in turn makes it more fun , the sails are so good now you don’t need the aggravation of cambers , will be glad when more Naish boards and sails are available , everything is sold out right now
Still remembering ...when i was a little boy (End of the 70's) , the 14 years (i think so...) old Robby Naish came to Fehmarn (Germany) to take part in the "Smirnoff Cup" and handled a signed poster to me. What a moment! Since seeing him on the water i was infected by the joy of windsurfing. Nice to see, that the legend ist still a class of its own. Greetings from germany.
Dude, i missed seeing you by 2 days in Kefalos, Kos...in the late 90's...anyway...sweet rig, and the speeds were mind blowing. 5.4 looked awesome. I use to prefer a smaller board. I kite now. But, its off season in Langebaan, SA and you just got me stocked to go back to my first love...windsurfing. Btw the first time i rode one of your boards, in Kefalos, Kos, i went out and rode straight back and told the guy i needed to buy that baord. Thanks for making ALL our windsurfing sooooooo much better dude. Aloha from South Africa.
I windsurfed for over a decade...now kiter. I was a fast windsurfer, not as fast as some, but fast. The speeds the Naish-Meister gets up to in this video are simply mind bending; considering that it is not flat water at all!
Hey Maui 1994 I was a Nash & North sails fan love it sailing from Kanaha to Hookipa racing my buddies upwind and then here comes Robbie Nash smoking us all what a speed demon. I always thought I was going fast until Robbie pinching up wind blew by us all....
love going back to the basics with the champ! never got proficient on the sailboard, moved on to the kite and never looked back, but if I lived in Maui this vid motivates and I for sure would have to try it more often.... great vid Robby!
The world is a better place with Robby in it. Thank you for the decades of joy and inspiration.
Got that right !
I windsurfed for years and changed to kitesurfing because it was something new. This video has made me remember how great windsurfing is.
Nice!👌🏼
I kitesurf now as well but there is nothing like that feeling of blasting along on a windsurfer trying to get every ounce of speed out of the sail and the board. The connection you have to the sail is much closer than to the kite.

Awesome Rob! Brings back memories of Dec 2018 Kanaha on my 110 Naish Titan and 5.3 Force 5....Had a blast out on the big water off Kanaha! Aloha!
Thanks for taking us on that blast Robby some serious speed there !!👍👏💪😁
shoulda stopped at Mama's! Great video! (jump at 6:40 was awesome!)
I’m 57 and have been in awe of Mr Naish since I started windsurfing in 1986 , still windsurfing , haven’t tried kiting or foiling yet , I believe in keeping windsurfing simple , which in turn makes it more fun , the sails are so good now you don’t need the aggravation of cambers , will be glad when more Naish boards and sails are available , everything is sold out right now
Did you saw the turtle at 7:22 Sooooo cute. Supercool ride. Thank you for this.
Wow... Too cool riding along with you on that run and getting a real taste of what it's like to sail like Robby Naish! Woo-Hoo!!
A short ride for you in those conditions! Awesome Robby as always, thank you.
Really great to see the legend surfing. Love it💪👌👍✌️❤️
Hey Maui 1994 I was a Nash & North sails fan love it sailing from Kanaha to Hookipa racing my buddies upwind and then here comes Robbie Nash smoking us all what a speed demon. I always thought I was going fast until Robbie pinching up wind blew by us all....
Yep I was there in 1992 same thing racing my buddies from K - H and comes Robbi ruined my ego run...
Big turtle at 7.22 lucky you missed it! great footage, thnx for sharing!
love going back to the basics with the champ! never got proficient on the sailboard, moved on to the kite and never looked back, but if I lived in Maui this vid motivates and I for sure would have to try it more often.... great vid Robby!
Having met you on gwithian beach in Cornwall U.K for the World Cup I still have a picture of your hat on your wave board on the beach
That was amazing speed and control ,great to watch
I just found myself a new inspiration. Thank you Sir!
