Hi Robby, i was once timed at just under 30kts in a national speed event back in the 90s. How the gear has changed, great video, mistral screamer lcs carbon was my favourite board ever, and i used Ken Black cambered sails made in cornwall at the time. My favourite sail size was my KB 5.4 cam slalom. I still have the board in a bag, its worth 1 $ now !!!!! At the age of 72 I don’t sail any more , age catches up with us all, hang loose buddy. Thanks for posting the video.

You’re a living legend Robbie. Have been a massive fan for close to 35 years. I remember you wrote an article about why you didn’t go fully battened. And you’re still showing your incredible skills now. My father was always the big kahuna (passed away 2 years ago). But for me you carry that spirit. Aloha & cheers from NZ🤙🤙🤙

Dave Sanger "The strangler" got me on a Mistral superlight in 85. He rebuilt the deck and sold me the whole rig for $200. I went shortboard and did a few trips to the gorge and then the Navy got in the way of sailing. I cant wait to get on the water where all there is in life is the dance of the wind and the waves.

Windsurfing San Francisco bay and the CA coast through the golden age of the 90s were the greatest years for me and my friends. I windsurfed from 1984 to 2016 at which time I would be almost unable to walk for a week afterward due to the enlarged bone spurs in the big toes. So I moved to Baja and learned to kiteboard at age 64, now 68 and my feet no longer hurt, it's a very relaxed kind of stoke! Learning to kite from windsurfing is tough at first because you try to over muscle it resulting in stupid launches. When you learn to totally relax and chill, hands close together on the bar, sheet out you will get it!
Saw you Robby, 1987 or so in the world cup race at SF. You said hi and nodded like you knew me, that's stuck with me, thanks!

The one time I hit a turtle, it broke my fin off. Didn't do it on purpose, just assumed the turtle would get out of the way. Tough lesson trying to sail back in with out a fin. After that, I always gave turtles a wide berth. Awesome video, what a ride along. As a rather mediocre windsurfer, I'm amazed that Robby Naish feels more comfortable unhooked when in powerful gusts! All the windsurfing he does, must have a tremendously strong grip & arms.

I spent 15 years Windsurfing in the San Francisco Bay, Sherman Island (about 50 miles east of SF in Fresh Water). I began around 1980 on a Windsurfer One Design. I would also Sail overpowered just to make sure I had enough Sail area because I didn't want to stop and change sails and lose 30 minutes of time. I'm 67, body is beat up with Arthritis...I remember the good times I had sailing. It reminded me of Snow Skiing on moving Moguls.

I kitesurf now as well but there is nothing like that feeling of blasting along on a windsurfer trying to get every ounce of speed out of the sail and the board. The connection you have to the sail is much closer than to the kite.

I must say that I find the idea of a short boom compelling, if not for the ease of control (and I will consider you the authority on this) for the portability of the sail. I can literally stash (even) the 7 meter RN sail in the back of the car without it ever having to spill over into the area where the gear shift is. And plus, its appealing to have sails that can effectively serve as Foil and regular windsurf sails. Fresh perspective. Kudos!

    • @pureprotein9597
      @pureprotein9597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I work my tongue when I windsurf, but thats because I cuss so much because; 1)I’m bad. 2)my gear is ancient (1986 alpha 230a) and is not the best, but best I could find for sale in my price range(bought for 300$ Canadian in rural Saskatchewan) it works plenty good for 300$ as it would be well into the thousands to get any kind of good setup. 3) because the lake I windsurf at has some weird unpredictable wind due to the surrounding hills, where sometimes there are two different winds almost blowing 45-90° to each other. But man it does work the whole body too, I ate 3penutbutter and banana sandwiches one morning and windsurfed for hours that day, came back and my body was suuuper toned. Its easy to work your body that hard when your having fun ;)

It wasn't too long ago that sails with lots of monofilament were "out". Is this a budget oriented sail for the masses with the monofilament or some new improved type? Hard to believe "the man" would be riding a budget sail other than to promote it. I still have an old NP monofilament sail that I like. Glad to know I won't be too out of fashion using it - noisy but handles well.
I remember seeing Robby Naish race a slalom in Hood River in the 80s where in one heat he was miles ahead of everyone and planing the whole time when the most of the rest of the pack was barely moving. The other racers were only halfway through the course when he went flying across the finish. They called the heat off for lack of wind but I thought they should have given it to the man.

Oh Robby! I missed you about a day or two on Karpathos last year - the floor was still hot where you walked! ))..
After a little 20 years break I restarted with windsurfing 1 1/2 years ago. Comming tuesday at Teneriffe.. O bought myself lots of 2nd hand gear, including a Mistral Equipe Carbon - just a bit younger than me ))..
The only new board I'll buy will be a Naish board, when I ready for it!
Lots of hugs, my dear idol ))..

That video is getting me stoked to get back on the water. Spent a ton of time back in the 80’s on a Mistral Malibu and a 6.6 cambered race sail on Lake Erie. Never forget the feeling from kicking up the center board and surfing down the waves.

Amazing you can still do this. After windsurfing through my 20s, kids wrecked my back and at 40 I can't really even down-haul anymore let alone handle a gust. So glad you missed that turtle! Incredible speed. Thanks for sharing your day :-)

Great to see you still thrashing.
Did I ever tell about the time I beat you in one race at the US Sailboard Champs at Atlantic City? That is until I explained to the race committee that I was actually dead last. Can't remember if I ever made any blades for you.

Ah but not super high aspect compared to my early late 80’s early 90’s gear lol. Wish I could still take the pounding, my body is getting sore just watching this... great stuff Robby! I’ve done that run several times and the sea life alone is worth the trip.

I've done that run a couple times before back when I was younger. I don't remember going that fast though! But I do remember that it's very tiring! I'm not sure I could do it now. My favorite part of it is taking in the beauty of everything like the cobalt blue water, the flying fish, the sugar cane fields with Haleakala in the background. It's quite a trip!
