How can this guy not have more subscribers? Interesting information and great production value. Very worthwhile channel offering something different to a US video gamer.
i wasn't aware of how much there was in the way of bootleg and unofficial releases for the PS1 made in Russia, i'm a big fan of collecting obscure games for the console, so i'll have to look into it
Actually, as Victor said, not all of our bootleg translations were bad, but early ones... Goody... The were atrocities. For example The Harry potter and the philosopher stone got 4 bootleg translation for ps1 and pc version got 4 others translations. And you know what, half of them were actually pretty good, even translations for ps1. Also, many our bootleg translation has dub, which also was good at times So if you are going to collect russian bootlegs there is the list of all of them, from best to worst Ps1 translators 1) Лисы (Foxes), Disel, Vitan. They all were daughter companies of one biggest bootleg company named "Electronic pirates".Usually translation made by electronic pirates has good dub and good translation. Pretty often they cooperated with local television actors. Probably the best translator for ps1. As all pirates they also released bad translations, but ammount of their good translation is still big 2) Golden leon. Another great ps1 bootleg. For example their translation of 40 winks is good you could easily find it in youtube. 3) Paradox . Ah... It is hit and miss. Their translations of children games or games based on cartoons were great, but their other translations usually were mediocre at best. 4) RGR . Mediocre at best voiceover, and good to great text translation. But because russian isn't your native language, i think their releases wont be interesting to you 5) Vector. The reason i put this company so low is simply. They often missed, than hit. Usually text translation was good. But dub... Let say it was their weakest side. 6) Kudos. Just run away as far away from this company as possible. Funny Harry potter translation in this video is with phrases "I sow some shit" and Madam Hook translated as madam fuck is their work. Run away unless somebody will say to you that some their translation is good, because usually their translation has shitty quality. Pc bootleg translators 1) Fargus and Akella. In the beginning they work together. But in 2001 Akella became licensed company, and left Fargus, because Fargus thought that being bootleg company is better(it was revealed in on interview, where former worker of akella said, that yes, they worked together until 2001, before the big scandal between them). Akella was the first russian translator company. And without a doubt, even their bootleg translation has fantastic quality. For example their 7th guest, full throttle and some other translation are available in GOG today as official russian translations. After Akella left Fargus most of dub fargus's actors left fargus also, and worked with Akella. But be aware, due to high quality of their translation there are many fakes, so watch info here, it will help you. piper-old games.ru 2) 7th wolf. Well, up until 2001 their translation were, but then it was hit and miss. If their translation has dub, then you got pretty good translation, if translation is text or sub only - skip it. 3) Дядюшка Рисеч . If you see their label on cd label or in autorun. Get this cd. It is another great translator team, who later work with Akella as Crazy House Studio. But be aware - there were two types of their translation - funny and normal. In funny transaltion they added a lot of jokes. For example they translated U.F.O as Unbelievable adventures of snickers in Russia. 4) City. The company cooperated with uncle risech. Ok to good dub quality, good text translation. 5)GSC Game World . Yep the very same Gsc game world. You can see their translation in 8bit, Эликтан, Triada and Медиа-Лайн editions. Mediocre dub, good text translation. 6) Русский Проект. Well, ok dub, and until 2003 excellent text translation. But becluse of pretty bad dub quality, i hardly can suggest it to you.. Hope it will help you
Hey Viktor, thanks for these videos they're very interesting! It's scary how most of it matches the videogame industry in my own country, Argentina. My first "Family Game", which is the generic name we had for Famicom clones, was actually grey and white like the Dendy "classic" you showed in your Dendy video. Even the part of having broken bootleg translations matches, my FF 7 copy would bug out in the second or third disc, and the translation was abysmal because they had to fit long spanish words in tiny english containers. At least we didn't get numbers instead of Cyrillic :D I think I remember seeing movies for PS1 back then but I might be confusing them with normal VCDs... Please keep the videos coming, they're great!
In México the bootlegs on PSX were very prominent, also we have a lot of bootlegs with NES games emulators. I suppose some of that illegal market was bring to latinamerica from china or maybe russia. GOOD VIDEO !!
PlayStation was a dream in the 90s.And my mom will never bring something like first game console from sony on birthday. That was sad, but now i understand all goodness on this. I spend more blast processing hours with my lovely Genesis.
Man, looking at all those covers of dear and popular PS1 games feels like the parallel universe. I mean look at Metal Gear Solid and Soul Reaver at 15:21. For a lifelong PS1 fan, I always wondered what was going on in Russia. I knew it's a SECAM region, France used to be too and yet they're PAL for PS1. Never saw any official Russian translations for PAL games and this right here shocked me. It's a heck of a culture, I gotta get my hands on some of those Russian games now. As for me, in Bosnia we used to have it all. Some of us, myself included had NTSC U/C console and games, my dad bought it at the US Army base that was there in post war period, though regular imports for Bosnia were PAL consoles and games. Since both variations were too expensive for poor folks over here, there were a lot of pirated bootlegs and chipped consoles, A LOT. They're still easy to find today, well, they're not translated or modified, but improvised disc and cover images or 3in1 5in1 collections, hell da! Edit: My best friend even has a couple of NTSC J games at his disposal, he got it from a neighbor for free. How it managed to get here, nobody knows.
I'm from Greece and some Russian bootlegs were sold here by our local pirates. I do recall some back newly Hollywood movies with Cyrillic subtitles, as well as porno. The latter was a lot more common amongst kids. Imagine a random youngster asking for some money from his father in order to get the latest PS1 bootleg game, but in reality buying some quality adult premium Russian entertainment in order to watch it with his school buddies. Fun times.
Video CDs were crazy popular in places in Southeast Asia where the muggy tropical weather would quickly ruin VHS tapes, but I didn't know that the Eastern Bloc had them too. Guess as long as they were easy to bootleg, right?
8:56 Wait a minute,is that PLAYERS logo? Players was a very popular pirate brand on Brazil throughout the PS1's era, making not only games with a very good quality but also memory cards and even joysticks for the OG Playstation back in the day. Very interesting to see that peculiar symbol stamped on Russian games as well !!!
Adult game market is still huge, just more hidden nowadays. YOu have to enable it in Steam, then you can see all the new weirdo stuff they have out nowadays. VR is big especially for the sex games, prolly more sex games than real games really.
This is pretty interesting. There has always been one Russian bootleg I've wanted to see for awhile and that is of Jet moto 3. The cover art is quite hilarious to me. As a collector of all things Jet Moto I've always wondered what the case and disc looked like. 😄
Just discovered this channel, great videos, and I myself living in Estonia find myself discovering some of these 90s bootlegs. Have the discs in your collection been backed up for preservation?
You can buy Russian PS1 bootlegs only secondhand now. The best option is avito.ru but I doubt you can find / buy anything there without knowledge of Russian. If you want just to look at different covers you can google pictures “русские обложки игр ps1”.
@@RussianVideoGameComrade I love the crazy covers. Here in Brazil the bootleg and pirate games has some crazy covers as well. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with some "Frog Warriors" in the cover, or a Toe Jam and Earl Genesis game with Twinsen’s Odyssey cover.
They know about me. They even retweeted my first episode, but didn’t ask me to somehow participate in their show. It’ll be an honor for me of course, but I don’t think I want to be annoying. If they’ll ask, will do it with a great pleasure!
Hello, my friend! Can I ask, would you show us that game, WWF SmackDown 2 for the PlayStation please? I am fascinated- it has Bill Goldberg on the front, who was not working there at the time. I'd love to know how different it is. Thank you for the enlightening content!
This has me curious now if there's a connection between "Hard Truck" and "Hard Truck Apocalypse". If there isn't, it would be an amusing coincidence for them to end up with such similar names given how different they were in Russia.
Language text is a tricky matter, I've tried a lot of characters for retro graphics practice where English fits in the smallest amount of pixel resolution, 3x5 pixel characters, useless for other languages. And then the image space limit, yikes. Wow that is weird, PS1 Russian Mobster Diablo jewel case also has Microsoft Windows logo on it for no reason. O_o??? I've collected a few Video CDs here in NA, quickly learned many are bootlegs. ;) You can do movies with the regular PS1 hardware but an add-on to help makes sense for higher fidelity sake. Yeah in NA we hate erotic games, I swear on this bible lol, so we never got any on consoles. Wow Catherine Zeta Jones did erotic Russian PS1 games? ^_^
Wow that is weird, PS1 Russian Mobster Diablo jewel case also has Microsoft Windows logo on it for no reason. O_o??? Cover says that you can play it on PC too.
I am glad that Russians fought back against greedy capitalists lol. I dont see the problem with being upset if someone decides to steal your translation, people dont think its okay either in the emulation scene. Most of these games were American, European or Japanese anyways, the same Imperialist countries who worked for years to finally dismantle the Soviet Union and bring Russia into ruins in the 90s. There was also no copyright under the Soviet law because it doesnt exist under Socialism, and neither did the new Russia recognize any western copy right standards at the time. These Russian translation companies did nothing wrong.
Ah, the classic telltale sign of a chipped PS1, where the acronym on the splash screen says something different (SCEE) from the full company name (Sony Computer Entertainment AMERICA). Debug units (or certain Mechapwned PS2s) ignore the wobble entirely and have no acronym there.
What he sorta-kinda should have mentioned while low-key begging for a Green Card with this video is that Russia has been undergoing a major cultural and financial collapse at that time: after the fall of USSR the Ruble went kaput, many parents had 2-3 simultaneous jobs to survive and raise us 90s kids, in 1998 there was a freaking nation-wide financial crisis that ended up in a default, and crime rates had been skyrocketing all the way to the early 2000s (I had a friend who's father was literally killed by a mugger on his way home), all the while Russia trying to stop Chechnya from creating its own ISIS - by fighting in two Chechen wars. Hope that clears things up why licensed multimedia products of the West just wasn't a thing around here for so long. Oh, and Japan beat us all to it with its kinky PC-98 "hentai computer" in terms of erotic digital content by a long shot :)

The idea of pirates trying sue other pirates for pirating their pirated software is absolutely hilarious.

Pocket monster ii has an Anti pirqcy screen on the Snes version, a bootleg Game based on Pokémon (or pocket monsters on Japan).
