Now, obviously he doesn't find out about his own backstory until after the series starts but Aang is literally the sole survivor of his entire culture
If we're talking about Splinter's backstory, the saddest version in my eyes is definitely his 2012 incarnation. Where not only was he was Hamato Yoshi, but lost his wife and infant daughter to from a fire started by a fight between him and Shredder. What's worse was during the first season finale, it was revealed that Shredder saved Splinter's baby, only to raise her as his own, becoming Karai.

But then during their fight in the first finale, Shredder revealed he took his daughter that night as he left, rasin her as Karai and making her believe Splinter was the one who killed her mother.
I thought Zuko was going to be there. But Iroh in honorable mentions is enough for me.

Simon Petrikov's backstory resonates so much with me that I still can't watch the Adventure Time episode I Remember You without crying. My late grandpa suffered from Alzheimer's and I saw myself with the same struggles as Marceline while dealing with the Ice King.
It's always hard you remember them, but they don't remember you I personally haven't gone through it and pray I don't I wouldn't be able to handle that if it happened to my grandparents

Honestly, it took me until now to realize that, if it wasn't because of the comedic moments, Adventure Time would be considered a supernatural horror psychological thriller drama.
What are the chances that Courage’s parents ended up on the moon like Della and survived for roughly 10 years? Someone please say yes… I’m asking this because, compared to Huey, Dewey, and Louie (who already had it extremely bad, I felt so bad for them, Donald, and Scrooge), Courage actually witnessed his parents leave in the rocket, and they weren’t on it by choice like Della. Also, I’m now realizing, unlike Della, Courage’s parents aren’t trained/professional aviators, but god, I just feel so bad for Courage. 😢
The end of the episode we find out their alive and it cuts right before them and other dogs beat the vet

Other characters with devastatingly sad backstories:
- Helga (Hey Arnold!): She had a troubled childhood with an aggressive dad and neglectful mom who’s implied to be an alcoholic, and is a victim of sibling favoritism as she’s in the shadow of her older sister.
- The Brain (Animaniacs & Pinky and The Brain): He was once an innocent field mouse who was abducted from his home by Acme Labs scientists and subjected to horrific experiments, and is motivated to take over the world so he could gain control over his life again.
Fiddleford McGucket (Gravity Falls): He was once a brilliant scientist who became traumatized after going into the portal, and created a machine that messed with his mind and eventually became the town fool.
Watching Fairly Odd Parents younger I didn’t even realize Timmy’s life was really fucked up

Why wasn't Raven from Teen Titans on this list? Her 'father' was a demon and it was prophesied that she would be the portal to Earth so Trigon could take over the universe.

I think the Gravity Falls character with the saddest backstory is Old Man McGucket. He was a promising engineer who developed PTSD from going in Ford’s portal so he made a memory eraser that eventually caused him to go crazy.

The “Courage the Cowardly Dog” one got me. The first time I watched it was when I was at my Grandma’s house and idk that episode really made me sad. I cry when this episode comes on

I always tear up whenever I watch/listen to the “I Remember You” episode of “Adventure Time.” Poor Simon just wanted Betty back.😭😭😭
But he never got Betty back. 💔😭 Well he did, for a bit, but still ended up losing her as she merged with GOLB.
What's even worst about Splinters backstory is in the 2012 version, the woman he loved dies in a fire set by Shredder and was made to believe that his daughter was dead too, only to find out that she was alive and raised by Shredder.
Poor rat man, why can't he catch a break? Please, give him his daughter back, or at least, let them have a father and daughter reunion. I can't think of anything else now that I know more about Master Splinter than I had ever known about him at all..
The fire didn't kill Tang Shen, Shredder cut her down by accident trying to kill Yoshi.
Some other honorable mentions:
- Helga Pataki (Hey Arnold): Her parents were not the best with her tough but distant father, her possibly alcoholic mother, & her older sister being seen as the favorite.
- Raven (Teen Titans): Her father is a literal demon who uses her as a pawn to take over the world. Because of this, she’s distant from everybody, even her friends.
- Zuko (Avatar The Last Airbender): Mother disappeared, scarred by his father, banished from his home to search for the Avatar, became a fugitive after failing, & struggled with believing that what his father ordered him to do was right.
- Kevin Levin (Ben 10): Abusive father, ran away from home as a kid, became obsessed with his absorbing powers to the point that it made him go insane.
- Fiddleford McGucket (Gravity Falls): Was a promising scientist & assistant to Ford Pines who became a crazy old man after overly relying on a memory erasing device to help him forget about what he saw through Ford’s portal.
- The Delightful Children from Down the Lane (Codename Kids Next Door): Originally the missing members of Sector Z of the Kids Next Door, the Delightful Children were taken by Father & brainwashed into what they became.
- Rex Salazar (Generator Rex): Parents were killed during the Nanite event that infected all the population of Earth with nanites, brother was sent 5 years into the future, & Rex himself suffered amnesia due to the incident.
The story of Chuckie's mother always makes me cry.

I just watched that episode of Avatar, where Iroh made a memorial to his dead son. That was when I found out the voice actor, Mako passed back when it came out. May he rest in peace.
mako was also the beloved voice of the villainous aku in samurai jack, where he had so much fun with that role

I would have included Helga and Mr. Hyunh's backstories from Hey Arnold! Helga had a neglectful Father, an alcoholic Mother, and a Sister who was Miss Perfect and the apple of her parents' eye. Mr. Hyunh was a Vietnam War refuge who had to give up his daughter in order to keep her safe and get her away from the war.

I definitely cried during the "I remember you" episode of Adventure Time. Actually, ever since they've told Ice King's back story, I ended up becoming emotional in almost every Ice King-centric episodes.
What about Amelia from Infinity Train? You can't leave her off, I mean her is that she lost her husband leaving her incredibly heartbroken and the moment she ended up on train, the first thing she does was usurp the real conductor, take over and begin to create carts in hope in making one where her husband is still in.
Pretty tragic character to me.

Probably Dr. Doofenshmirtz because he has a lot of tragic backstories to tell but he still takes care of Vanessa opposed to how his parents treated him as a kid
I feel like a few characters from Steven Universe should have been on this list. For example, Pearl spent thousands of years fighting right beside the love of her life (Rose) in a war. She spent most of her life doing everything for her just to see her fall in love with someone else and give up her physical form to have Steven.

Krabs and Plankton reminiscing their former friendship reminds me of the time the US and Russia were friends too… up until the Cold War.
I would like to add Demona from Gargoyles. Though due to her own actions, her entire clan was destroyed except her mate and a few others which were turned to stone, and the eggs (which she wasn't aware had survived). She caused everything bad that happened to her, but refused to admit it, being blinded by her hatred for humans. She briefly formed an alliance with Macbeth, and was even eternally bound to him, resulting in immortality. She spent a thousand years watching gargoyles die all around her. She lived in constant misery. When her mate Goliath awoke after a thousand years, she was pit against him because of her blind hatred of humanity. If she would only acknowledge her own responsibility for her suffering and let go of her hatred, she would be welcomed back, but she won't. It's tragic.
My heart aches for these characters. Their pasts were so sad and so bleak, they shattered my heart into pieces. 😭😭😭💔💔💔
I like Timmy Turner from the 2001 Nickelodeon TV show “The Fairly Oddparents” and Chuckie Finster who is Kimi Finster's brother from the 1991 Nickelodeon TV show “Rugrats". Timmy Turner and Chuckie Finster are the best Nickelodeon characters.

The Ice King has a very sad backstory he was originally a successful genius turned insane by the unstable magic of the crown and was forced to live in a war ravaged world.

We never know what happened to Brian's father I like to imagine he's kind of like him a big jackass drunk dog who is racial and sexist so Brian realize that all of mistakes is because of him his father.
Simon’s backstory is so heartbreaking and really complex and it makes me sad about him

What about Hiro Hamada who lost his brother and formed Big Hero 6, or his current love interest Karmi who still has no idea that the Amara who turned on her and mutated into a monster to do what she wanted was actually a clone who took over Sycorax while the real Liv was in cryo sleep and her clone ruined her and her company and because of those Parasyths was robbed of her chance of really meeting the woman who inspired her love of Biotech which we've made a very interesting superhero origin if Big Hero 6 The Series continued more
No Skips from Regular Show? His back story is something he cant control and has to live on with that forever
I know, I thought that backstory would Be another honorable mention on this list.
His backstory in the Season 5 episode Skips' Story, is one of the most saddest and melancholic episodes that I have seen since 2014 when I was a teenager and I was between 16 and 17 years old, the episode when he tells his backstory to Mordecai and Rigby, how he became immortal, why he skips and Who was the only woman he ever Loved is Just amazing and heartbreaking at the same time.
Lillie from Pokémon had a pretty painful story too, been though its in the anime section. Lillie's father went missing when she was a baby and then she got attacked by an Ultra Beast which developed her fear of touching Pokémon. Then sometime after conquering this fear, she found Magearna which was from her father before he went missing. As of now, she and her family are still searching for him. Hopefully it won't be long before a reunion....
You guys should've included Sam I-Am from "Green Eggs and Ham". While he spends most of the first season acting like a happy, optimistic person, his backstory (and true intentions) are actually much darker than anyone would believe.
Honestly Simon&Marceline story arc, is what make me watch cartoon again, I'm just watch the episode "remember me" while babysit my nephew and I'm 19 at the time.

Stolas from helluva boss he has a very tragic backstory he was forced to marry someone who wanted him dead, he augured with his wife and his daughter is always sad, and ruined his marriage and I think he was also abused by his dad and he was tormented by his ex wife Stella
Honestly, I think Catra from She Ra 2018 should be on the list for top ten characters with saddest backstories. She’s whole life, she was abused and mistreated by Shadow Weaver, while Adora was her favorite child. Catra had to grow up stuck in Adora’s shadow her whole life with Adora being the only person who loved and accepted her. And then when Adora left Catra for Bow and Glimmer, Catra felt betrayed by the only friend who ever did show her love and fondness. I think Catra has one of the saddest most tragic and painful backstories in all of cartoon history

*Amity Blight- The Owl House
-Amity's early life wasn't exactly a happy one. As a child she was emotionally abused and manipulated by her overly-controlling parents. They threatened to have her friend at the time, Willow, barred from attending Hexside if she didn't cut ties with her. So, against her will, Amity ended her friendship with Willow and as the years went on, even Amity herself started to believe her Parent's toxic philosophy and acted more and more like her Mother, Odalia (As seen in Amity's early appearances on the show). Heck, Odalia even dyed Amity's hair mint green and had her wear a telepathic pendant to keep her in line. And WHY was she the victim of abuse? Because her parents viewed Willow and other lowlives as weak and inferior, and they made Amity believe that she couldn't show any kind of weakness. At first I thought it was like unwillful conditioning, but then I realized, Amity was only acting like a bully this because she's afraid to stand up to them and what will happen if she defies them.
Luckily, Luz is able to pull her out of her hole and help her patch things up with her old friend. And when Odalia puts Luz's life in danger during a Blight Industries Expo, Amity musters the courage to stand up to her Parents, crush her own pendant and save Luz. By this point, she was done being a puppet. And if her new lilac-haired makeover is anything to go by, Amity is no longer the splitting image of Odalia Blight. She is now a cotton candy haired goddess and Luz's Awesome Girlfriend.
Oh no, it's the situation with Rapunzel and Mother Gothel all over again 😭. At least Gothel didn't have magic to keep her ruse of a "loving mother" ongoing for 18 years, but still, somebody gotta keep these crazy people under control before they end up dying or hurting themselves or others over the need to control. Why can't kiddos be allowed a normal childhood, huh? This is madness!😡👎
I think that the Plantar family from Amphibia deserved an honorable mention. Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the series.
Sprig and Polly's parents were eaten alive before either of them could truly remember them, Hop Pop blamed himself for their deaths and still hasn't forgiven himself, and their family name is a laughing stock in the eyes of their community (at least until Anne starts living with them).

2 I know ice king backstory is really sad but first place should have gone to doof just watch the episode of doof seeing all of his sad backstories
3 aang should be in here imagine learning that you are the avatar at age 12 then learn that you are going to be forced leaving for another place and all of your friends at the temple doesn't want to play with you, leave in a storm and freeze for a century, wake up only to learn that you are the last survivor of your culture, learn that you have to learn in less than a year what most avatars do in way more and that you have to fight someone or else the world is doomed, lost his bison one of the few living creatures from before the world that is still around you *the other is king bumi), almost dying, learn that everyone thinks your dead and that you have to hide who you are and than learning that you might be forced to kill someone

Dr. Doof- none of his parents loved or cared about him, he was raised by wild cats, his only friend flew away, he celebrated his own birthday and NO ONE showed up, etc-inator. *This guy's is basically calling his hell "home. and that hurts"*
Ice King/Simon- lost his mind, his loved ones, and his sanity ever since he put on the crown. his heart was cold and his loved ones couldn't stop nor save him. *it's really sad to think about.*
And what about characters from "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir" like Gabriel Agreste or teen characters that went try some child traumas like: Luka, Juleka, Zoe, and her half-sister Chloe. And we know Felix lost his dad when he was little and his uncle isolated and distanced him and his mom from his and Adrien's lives and maybe didn't make a lot of friends then he probably made abusive oppressing enemies, and hey we know Lila's mom is always absent because of her hard-work busy schedule also you ever notice how her dad is never around either who maybe quickly rejected and neglected her and walked out on his wife and child before they moved to Paris and maybe she doesn't like to lie but she probably has to relay on it since she is was probably a nobody before she did which is why Lila and Felix are the way they are. And maybe people like Zoe, Luka, Juleka, and Rose could help Chloe become a better person

What about Kevin 11 from the Ben 10 franchise? When he was five years old, his father was murdered by an alien criminal, and throughout his childhood, he got bullied and abused because of his powers, leading him to run away from home and live on the streets, he got mutated into a freakish monster on multiple occasions, he got imprisoned in an inter dimensional prison, and while they were escaping, his mentor at the time was murdered by the prison warden, and then he got abducted by an evil alien organisation that used him as a living weapon, so I really think that he deserved a spot on this list.

In my opinion, Rick Sanchez had the most gut wrenching backstory in cartoon history.
No offence to uncle Iroh but I think his life was extremely brilliant because of Zuko but I think Zuko had a worse life before he ran off with his uncle he was burned by his father!

You mention Splinter, but not the 2012 version, who arguably has the most tragic backstory of the 3 Splinters.
Betrayed by one he saw as brother, suffered knowing his wife died in the fire of their home because of said brother's jealousy, thinks for 15 years that his baby daughter died in the fire too only to learn his brother had raised her on the lie Splinter killed her mother and to hate him, and to end up dying shortly after finally properly reuniting with his daughter.
80s and 2003 Splinter ain't got nothing of that Splinter
