    Fast fashion has really messed up our perception of what clothes should cost- the fashion industry convinces people that they have to buy a lot of clothes to keep up with ridiculously fast paced trends, so we are used to the prices of h&m/ f21/ etc as a baseline when really there is no way the cost of their clothes could account for a living wage for its producers

    • @ElleBellsChannel

      It didn't bother me until I discovered the cost of fabric. I was shocked that a single yard of fabric was the cost of a shirt. Amd learned how long it took to sew one item.

      @@ElleBellsChannel I work in clothing manufacturing as a sewer and can say that on a production level everything is timed and and has been designed in a way that it can be put together fast. You see times anywhere from a couple seconds to about 3-12 minutes per item or component. You also get faster if you're making more than one of something and more times you've sewn it.

      I know right ! When you see in fabric stores that cotton is always at least 6€/ per meter and you can't do anything with just that you realize how cheap fast fashion is. I mean when you think of that 30€ for a shirt is not expensive ? With the shipping, manufacturing, design and all ? We should talk to our grand-parents about how much clothes used to cost before fast-fashion.

      Yes this exactly. Think about it, 100 years ago even the wealthiest people weren’t acquiring clothing at the pace we are encouraged to buy clothes now.
      I sew I did a ready to wear fast in 2018 where I pledged not to buy clothes for a year. I’ve never gone back. Making your own clothes changes how you view fashion and shopping. Clothes shopping is an exercise in paying to be told all the ways your body is wrong. And once you start making clothes you start to really see the construction and fabric issues in rtw.

    I don’t necessarily think that the problem is the clothing is sized incorrectly, I think that in North America we’re just used to EVERYTHING having stretch. Almost all pants are more like leggings, jeggings or at least have an elastic waist every where you go and Aritzia is one of the only stores that actually carries true pants or trousers without crossing it with a stretchy material to make it more comfortable. Therefore you’re forced to size up from what you normally are because there is no wiggle room

      I think that’s pretty accurate. We love our stretch. There is also the fact that all countries have different sizing from some countries I have to size up 3x and others I need a size down. That’s the sucky part of online shopping you can’t try on the clothes. Cuz I hate going shopping.

    I went to the Aritzia website to find out whether or not they had a sizing chart with like, proper measurements, and they do. It is so so important to know your measurements and compare them to the company's sizing guide, or you're gunna have a bad time, no matter the brand. Using my measurements, depending on the type of clothing, style or intended silhouette, I'd fit anything from a size 6 to a size 12, so that's like their entire range from medium to extra large.
    It'd be more interesting to see you try on clothing in line with your measurements, rather than focusing on size numbers or letters, since as you say, the number (or letter) doesn't matter, only the fit and quality does.

      unfortunately even with sizing charts, some brands aren’t even accurate to them. for example, i just had to make several exchanges at hot topic. i’m an extra large in some junior shirts whereas other junior shirts, i’m swimming in a medium.

      @@sabrina_jessica that would still make a more interesting video because knowing which companies have accurate measurement charts is wayyy more useful since we already know that standard sizing is highly inaccurate between stores. Imo, it's less likely for stores to lie with numbers, and if they do, it's much easier to call them out vs calling them out for not confirming to the arbitrary "small" or "size 6" or whatever.

    I think it's important to discuss price when it comes to ethical/sustainably sourced clothing. You aren't paying for someone's $0.20/day, you're paying for someone to have a living wage and a safe working environment. This goes for fabrics as well. Think about the people behind your clothing, and it will make more sense to not buy a $20 sweatshirt from Target. Being sustainable and ethical in clothing choices isn't cheap, which it shouldn't be, but it is worth it when you consider the harmful effects of the fast fashion industry on people and the Earth.

    Besides the fact that sizing is arbitrary and it gets annoying when you rely too much on them rather than looking at actual measurements, I get really frustrated with TH-camrs when you comment on brands that are ethically sourced and pay their manufacturers and laborers and factory workers legal, ethical wages, and then you say "the prices aren't worth it." Here's the thing: we are so used to H&M and F21 prices that we don't stop and wonder, why does this T-shirt cost $8 at full price? Brands like Aritzia and Everlane and Reformation etc. cost more, not specifically because the quality is better (although it usually is) but because the people making your clothes aren't being paid starvation wages. And if you can afford to support those brands, it is ALWAYS worth paying more, I think. I'm not here to shit on people who can't afford ethical brands, I'm a recent college graduate, I usually can't either. But saying "this sweatshirt isn't worth $70" suggests that the only value that sweatshirt holds is its quality. Of course that matters, but so does the ethics behind what made it. I think we all have a very skewed idea of how expensive clothes should be, because we are so used to being able to get a pair of jeans for twenty bucks.

      True but I don't think Aritzia is as ethical and sustainable as they claim. They probably use higher quality materials which is why they feel better quality and they're able to justify their higher markups. The standards are still considerably low for what is considered the minimum wage for outsourced clothing factories that these big brands use. Because none of them are required to disclose this information, they often only disclose the "good" info. If anyone really wants some kind of guarantee of ethical sourcing, chances are they are much smaller local designer brands that don't push out so many styles all at once.

      Yes! That would be much more helpful. We already know that sizing varies company to company. Taking her measurements each time she does a clothing haul and using that store’s sizing chart would be a more accurate representation of the sizing for each individual company she reviews. The sizing chart is there for a reason and companies always refer customers to it for the best fit.

    • @corndo9
      @corndo9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @Kitty That would be great. If she used measuring tape & then purchased from brands that fit based on their size chart, it seems like it'd be a lot more effective towards her stated goal for these types of videos. Sometimes proportions & stuff don't carry over accurately on screen, but measuring tape is inherently more straightforward, so people would be able to tell more easily if they have a similar body type to her, & then based on that they would see how the clothes from a particular brand fit, plus she'd be actually supporting more size-inclusive brands in the first place!
      I hope your comment gets a lot more likes so she sees it & maybe does this in future videos.

    2 it’s a brand that carries many brands within it so the sizing will not stay consistent between all the items.

      Fellow Canadian here! And, yes I so agree with you! This whole review was really frustrating. If you're not buying it in your size, it likely won't fit, and I think Aritzia is actually more true to size, and fast fashion is the one that has the vanity sizes.
      It's great that she wants to donate money, but the best thing you can do is to not buy this shit in the first place, and don't promote fast fashion, as Sierra does. Their smaller sizes though are more consistent so I think unless you have gone up and down in weight you can not really know the true experience of trying to shop at Aritzia if you are bigger... Also food for thought when it comes to a brand.

Well, I have about a handful of times in same amount of time, last winter during a sale, I was lied to by an employee and couldn't return 700 dollars worth of stuff and only could get a store credit. Felt great. Haven't shopped there since. Lmk if you wanna buy the store credit. And EVERY other female in my high school class has had at least one horrible experience there. Living in Canada is definitely weird for sizing though because we have so many options from both American and Europeans brands, which can for sure be confusing, but brands that are actually Canadian owned and made (Arizona, Lululemon, etc.) they almost always follow the European true to size trend, not the American vanity size trend. I'm Canadian and from my experience Aritzia does fit "true to size" if we are basing that size off of the measurements they provide, which if you compare these measurements they are pretty standard. I did notice that Aritzia's waist measurement of a numerical size happens to be smaller than American Eagle (only store I checked), not by a lot, but it is. However that doesn't mean that it's not true to size that just means your numerical size might be different based on the waist measurements. Kelly Hills right. I know that. But it shouldn’t fit like a clinging tank top. (This dress would look great tucked into jeans!) It needs to flow away from the body, which gives the impression of slimmer body underneath when it’s slightly loose and flowy. Not sticking to the skin. Others have commented before that Sierra while being body confident -which I applaud-isn’t aware of her real “size”. She often gets things that are so tight and says they fit or too small size and shape that don’t fit but says they’re not her style , when it’s really more an issue of the right shape for her body or just needing the next size up. That’s more than sleeve length or paper bag waist.
      I just wanted to illustrate that “fitting” doesn’t mean the right “fit” for the style. KWIM?
      She is so popular, and I can see why. I knew she is going and still learning herself. I feel her next “step” in growing her channel should be to teach others how to find the right “fit”. By learning it herself, in her videos. It would ‘fit in’ perfectly with what she already does for her younger audience!

      I understand what you're saying, but it's not necessary for people to wear "flattering" clothes. In my opinion, people should wear what they like and what is comfortable! We don't need to make ourselves look "slimmer". I agree that Sierra is awesome for rocking it! :)

      Hanna Heleena the point the og commenter tried to make, in my opinion, is that Sierra sometimes writes things that are thight fitting because aren’t her correct sizing of as just not being her style instead of admitting she might have needed to size up for it to fit properly (the way it was designed to fit someone). That has nothing to with something being flattering to your body. Something can fit your body the way it’s supposed to but still not look flattering.

    • @gifteddancer
      @gifteddancer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jelke Lenaerts I totally understand that clothes have intended ways of fitting and being worn, and that's fine! I understand that some people think Sierra is just saying something fits even though it fits her tighter or smaller than intended, and therefore "doesn't fit". But what I'm trying to say is it doesn't matter. Lots of people buy certain clothing bigger or smaller depending on how they WANT it to fit. If Sierra wants to wear that dress for example, and she feels like it fits the way she wants and feels comfortable, then more power to her! People don't exist to look "good" (read: "slimmer") in clothes. :)

      Your comment kind of comes off as "well, you just can't accept that you're fat" but you can't blame people for not knowing their actual size because the sizing differs so much from store to store. If you've always been a 6 at one store and you try a 6 at a different store and it's too small then you'll obviously think the second store is "wrong". But it could just be that you were never a true size 6 to begin with.

    Unfortunately, truly ethical clothes are going to be much more expensive than what Americans are used to paying! Fast fashion pays the workers who sew it less than a dollar an hour. If you raise that to just what we think of as a minimum wage, not even a living wage, clothes are going to be much, much more expensive. And companies still need to make a profit! As a fashion student stuff like this matters a lot to me. $150 is a fair price for a pair of ethical wool pants, possibly even seems cheap to me.

Seems more that it's not necessarily about the dollar amount but then more budgeting and thought has to go into purchasing and you end up with less items at the end of the month. i think we are too used to having lots and lots of cheap items -- marie kondo wouldn't have taken off in popularity if not🤔

      Likely, robotics will be the future. This will decrease the human factor in production, line workers. It is sad how low wages are in other countries, but their cost of living is also much lower. Ethics are complex, in regard to taking jobs from already impoverished people living in third world nations, (unintended consequences). If I was still college age, I would be studying robotics, jobs will be plentiful.

      @@daddyshoneygirlusa7030 Robots sewing garments is a long long way off. The AI needed would be incredibly sophisticated. Lots of people assume we're already further into automation in the fashion industry than we truly are. While the future of the design aspect is definitely in CAD, every garment you wear is sewn by a human and that's not changing soon. And the ethics are simple to me! Human beings are being grossly underpaid to do a highly specialized job. And this isn't just in third world countries. Companies like Fashionnova have huge profits, yet contract their sewing to sweatshops in Los Angeles where they pay undocumented workers illegal wages. Even in third world countries, sweatshops are still unethical! Not only are sweatshops horrible working conditions by US standards, they often break safety codes and wage laws in less well off countries, while profits remain high and go to CEOs not involved in any actual aspect of the garment design or manufacturing process. The fashion industry is one of the biggest industries in the world, and it has so much corruption in it, but I adore fashion and am proud to study it.

      @@morganp2336 actually, Walmart already uses "Sewbots" for their contracts with US Government, which mandates products must be made in the USA. Like all technology, it takes about 3-5 years for prices and production to become mainstream and economically feasible for "the masses" here is an excerpt from Software automation website "SEWBOTS-as-a-Service creates immediate ROI benefits while enabling scale across retailer, brand, and manufacturer. For a monthly fee starting at $5,000 per month per robot, a factory can add annual production capacity of up to 1M units (product dependent). This enables a manufacturer to bring on a Sewbot for just over $55/shift (based on 7 days a week and 3 shifts a day)". The cutting of material has been performed via machine for years. I still maintain, ethics are complex, as most actions have a ripple effect, often unintended. When studying ethics, the term " unintended consequences" is explained, studied. Unintended consequences can be positive or negative.

      @@daddyshoneygirlusa7030 I stand corrected. Machines can sew t shirts, and other extremely simplistic textile goods! Good thing I don't go to school to learn to sew a t shirt. I stand by the majority of what I said. Garments of any fashion notability are a long way off from being automated. The fashion industry still needs designers, pattern drafters, etc, as well as seamstresses.
      Ethics are complicated in general, but I maintain the ethics of this particular situation are fairly simple. That would get into a complicated explanation of my political beliefs as well. In general though, people are literally losing their lives in sweatshops, not because sewing is a dangerous job in and of itself, but because safety measures are not enforced or followed. I am advocating for ethically produced clothing, made in any country, as long as people are paid well and safe on the job.

    You also seem to only like clothing from fast fashion companies that use super stretchy material so it fits in with your idea of what a size 12/14 looks like.     I shop at Artizia frequently. I’m hoping Sierra sees this so she can know;
    Artizia is the parent company of Babaton, TNA, Wilfred (Wilfred Free), and of course Artizia.
    These all carry their own house designs and sizing can be a little different for each. Personally TNA has always been kind of the “teen” brand and I consider the sizes to be more flex as their materials have some give.
    Babaton, and Wilfred have NO GIVE in fabrics as they often dont include high quantities of plastics like acrylic and polyester that allow clothing to stretch. I’m a size 2-4 and usually consistently go for the 4s in store as the fabrics don’t stretch (made of things like silk, cashmere, wool blends)
    While their sizing could use some work for inclusivity (they have said that they are expanding sizing this year), their clothes are extremely well made. The price point justifies it for me.
    They’re one of the only brands that carry high quality and fashionable merino wool clothing (for those that don’t know, it’s one of the few hypoallergenic wool blends on the market.

    Girl...did you look at the sizing chart and do your measurements beforehand? why would you buy things you know won't fit just to say you did and how noninclusive they are when you didn't look, i'm a bigger girl 5'3 and 170 pounds. I can find clothing that fits easily by using the sizing chart. Also not every store should be tailored to overweight people.

  • @coloritgreenbehappy
    @coloritgreenbehappy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    You say that sizing is arbitrary, but I haven’t seen you use the actual size chart and compare your measurements to the size chart. That is the best way to know if a brand is deceptively sizing. Obviously there is no universal size 12, but a 34” waist is an actual quantifiable measurement. Also that slip dress was way too tight. The more videos I watch, the less fashion sense and common sense your videos have.

    • @shaunnicolegroening
      @shaunnicolegroening 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It seems like unfortunately she doesn’t want to do that because she doesn’t want to expose her true measurements to her viewers because she wants to maintain this rhetoric that she’s a midsize and not a plus size. I think Sierra is beautiful inside and out, and her body is a beautiful shape, but it’s especially obvious in this video how insecure she is about the size she wears. It’s really sad because she preaches to us to not focus on the size on the label and just how it fits us and yet when she puts something on that’s true to size and not vanity sized, she’s super pressed about it because is makes her feel bad for not fitting into it(which it shouldn’t). All in all, I still love Sierra but this video is a huge miss and is in fact really bad for body positivity😕

    The numbers in sizing will be different from country to country, even between european countries that use the same number system they're different..... since you didnt buy from a US shop you shouldve looked up the sizing chart first. It's not fair to the brand to judge them just because they're not doing vanity sizing as badly as the US..

  • @nimezumii

    So, definitely not coming for Sierra LOL I would love to see size consistency across brands and have a 12 that is a 12 that is an extra large, but I just took a look at aritzia's website, and if you look at their sizing chart I feel like it's pretty accurate to the descriptions and sizing of the clothes she's wearing. like the extra large in their sizing guide is consistent with what I'd say an extra large is, and how the clothes are fitting her, but they have a whole different size guide for numbers, and the 12, I would say is more of a 6/8/10 (it matches my measurements and those are generally the sizes I wear) , but it's not claiming that a 12 fits a larger size, and the items seem to be pretty consistent with the sizing they give :) just thought I'd put this here for anybody who's thinking about shopping there, take a look at the size chart, they have three different ones for their different sizing methods! :)

    As much as the sizing is frustrating for you - I struggle to find any pants that fit because I am so tiny (00). So when I shop at regular stores everything is always too big and I have to get them altered! So for me this is size inclusive whereas the other stores not so much because they often do not cater to petite people. I think it’s important to cater to both sides of the spectrum (petite and plus size)! Also you’re right Canadian sizing is smaller because it caters to the majority of the population which is very different from US majority

    • @mariahmarie7558

  • @IAmMusicallyObsessed
    @IAmMusicallyObsessed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I never like when we say sizing runs "big" or "small" because in reality it's all relative. Like this brand is small compared to your usual brands, but to others it may even run large! It's the problem with assigning numbers that don't directly correlate to a measurement.

    • @shaunnicolegroening
      @shaunnicolegroening 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! She says aritzia runs super small, but to me they’re spot on and the stuff Sierra usually buys, like American Eagle run super big! And then I had a friend in high school from Korea and we went to the mall one day to look for dresses for a dance and she thought aritizia ran a little big, compared to clothes in Korea. Everything is relative!

    You’ve honestly inspired me on my weight loss journey for my own health. Prior to watching your videos I was wearing clothing way too big for me so that I could “hide” my body from the world. But now I’m dressing in ways that flatter my curves and it makes me feel so much more confident. I actually love when i catch people looking at me because i know their looking because i look good! Not because of my weight. And since I’ve been gaining confidence I’ve been able to lose the weight as well! It just goes to show positivity goes a long way.

    There's a weird phrase that I've said for years, that I want to share with you: "The sizing of women's clothes are determined by the phases of the moon, the stars in the sky, and weather or not the designer looked at a chicken before starting." All of this stupidity with sizing didn't happen until the 1980s, when vanity sizing became a thing! I yearn for the days when we stop vanity sizing, and just go by measurements! (You know... Like in men's clothes!!)
