watching this and other recordings of the show, i'd say Jonathan Groff has an incredible talent for finding cameras in an audience and having a meaningful stare-down with them while staying in character. good on you, brother!
That moment when it's midnight and you still haven't done your homework because you were watching Spring Awakening... "YEAH YOU'RE FUCKED ALL RIGHT AND ALL FOR SPITE"
Jonathan and Gideon are my favorite Hanschen and Ernst. Jonathan has an oddly gentle creepiness that can't be replicated, and Gideon has a cute, timid feel to his portrayal of Ernst. It's like a panther falling in love with a puppy.
The ironic part about this scene is that this is early late 19th, early 20th century Germany, and "30 years from now," Hanschen and Ernst would, in reality, probably be prosecuted and even sent to a concentration camp for being gay.
I finished playing Melchior in Spring Awakening yesterday, and to say it was amazing doesn't even come close to describing it. It really is a magical show.
The version of DWSA of Word of Your Body is definetly my favourite. This one is feels too much like a comedy... I mean that's not a bad thing, but I feel like DWSA version was more romantic and Andy and Joshua had so much chemistry on stage
Interesting Fact: In "Totally Fucked", the stage manager was told not to call the next light cue until the final clap died, to give off that "awkward" moment.
after only ever listening to the soundtrack a zillion times and watching this for the first time this scene is 14 times better than i could have ever imagined omfg
A couple summers ago my community theatre did this show and I was volunteering there and got to see the show a bunch of times. One time during "Totally Fucked", I was sitting in the front row and the guy playing Hanschen got right up in my face when they all went "blah, blah, blah"
At 3:45 you can hear someone say "oh god" They know the gay is happening and that it will overcome us all "THY SHALL SUCCOMBE TO THY GAYE!" ~probaby jesus
seriously this is the most well casted show ever. not hamilton, not DWSA, not Lion King- this show is the most perfectly casted show known to man and I will fight
I agree for the most part, but if I do prefer the DWSA version of this song. I love the original cast to bits but Andy Mientus is my favourite Hanschen, this version feels slightly too much like a caricature. But that's all I would change about the original
my friend from High School just got cast as Ernst in a local production of this. He pretty much is like the epitome of masculinity, and i won't lie that i might giggle a tid bit when he has to kiss whoever was cast as Hanschen...my immaturity coming out
i'm auditioning for the part of Hanschen tomorrow, for a friend's production of SA, and i am totally loving this character and how arrogant he is... ;)
i love whoever wrote the music to this! clearly they were no prude! i wish we could do this for my school musical but unfortunatly going to an anglican school it has a -10 chance of happening :P
seeing how extremly controversial and provoking the original Play was when it was written, I think the Music is only appropriate in portraying this. Furthermore, if anything this Musical & the play show that keeping T teenagers "safe" by keeping them ignorant just isn't a good idea. None of this should be shocking (as in cannot be shown) to someone much older than 13.
@puddleducks05 I think the reason why they move so weird and that the songs are so "modern" is to universally apply this to any viewer. It allows the message to transcend the normal boundaries set upon it by time and space, which makes the theme more applicable to people today. So, yes it's random and somewhat unorthodox choreography, but it makes the show that much more artistic.
Haha, at my school, there was controversy over "Oklahoma!" (two curse words, hell and damn). We're doing Les Mis this year, and in our school, that's edgy. -_-
In the reprise, I don’t understand why the audience is laughing so much it’s not that funny. I saw the dead west version first and it’s so weird in comparison
The vineyard scene was meant to be a comedic relief in the original version, so they made it became uncomfortable and awkward for both boys. The Deaf West version still kinda keeps the comedic relief, but they also made the scene more meaningful and beautiful through ASL interpretation, and made the relationship between Hanschen and Ernst less of a laugh and more loving.
dude it's fine to laugh at some of the jokes and some of the way they delivered the lines in the Word of Your Body Reprise but like, c'mon. cheap laughs at "how the gays act" but there are some serious moments in it too. feels like they're making fun of them. which may have been the point, I'm not sure. just seemed like allll the laughter is too much.
Totally Fucked is the best scene ever!!! When I saw it on Broadway, I actually screamed "FUCK YOU!" to my mom as an April Fools Day joke when I saw it on Broadway!!
@FMAguru2007 I'm sure it is! Maybe something to do with the stripping off of the past? The constraints that restrict them from growing, maturing? Something metaphorical!
Theordoreqaz i guess it depends on how much you interpret it. pretty much every version ive seen on the vineyard scene has the audience laughing at one point.
+Theordoreqaz tbh in the musical adaptation of the play the vineyard scene just. wasnt taken seriously. so they probably /did/ mean it to be funny, but youre absolutely right treating this scene like a comedy is rly annoying. the only thing is the writers arent free of blame and this all rly gets my goat bc i havent read through the whole original play but the vineyard scene was perfectly good??? they just went and changed all of the characterization, which isnt inherently a bad thing, but they did nothing interesting with it. they just used it for cheap laughs abt how funny ~the gays~ are when theyre put in stereotypical dynamics i love dying pls kill me (sorry if this is annoying i just gotta share my thoughts or i wont be able to stop thinking abt it)
there were the parts where hanschen can be interpreted to seem a bit arrogant in a comedic; I agree that the audience's laughing at nearly every line was irritating and rude, but some bits were interpereted by these actors to get a few laughs
@sokkie1111 I'm afraid that this is probably not likely. Even several of the creators said that Hanschen will probably pretend that this never happened, and even if they were carrying on a relationship, the prejudice of the time would make their lives incredibly difficult, especially in forty years or so.
Trust me, I don't like the "pretty dancing". I was trying to figure out why they were doing that. Thank you for answering my question. That thought had not occurred to me.
Alanna R. No it doesn't. It's just a really old German name. I believe there's no meaning to this name. It's not a typical name. Sounds kind of strange to Germans. :'D
Does anyone know what Wright says after "But what about the..?" He says something else and I've been trying to figure it out but it's hard to hear clearly. (This is after the famous "skin off the cream" line, if you're not sure what I mean)
watching this and other recordings of the show, i'd say Jonathan Groff has an incredible talent for finding cameras in an audience and having a meaningful stare-down with them while staying in character. good on you, brother!
if you watch any ripped recordings of him as King George he gives the camera a nasty stare down too lol
When does he see the camera on here and as long george ???
King?
Alyssa Orrick it’s from a show called Hamilton where he played King George.
I love how responsive the audience is! In my opinion that's the best thing ever when your performing on stage it just improves your performance 100%
The audience can make or break a show
That moment when it's midnight and you still haven't done your homework because you were watching Spring Awakening...
"YEAH YOU'RE FUCKED ALL RIGHT AND ALL FOR SPITE"
so true lol
me currently
Tale as old as time
03:30 here and have a course work deadline in 7 hours but im still here too
Lydia Sanderson oh man, wish you the best
Jonathan and Gideon are my favorite Hanschen and Ernst. Jonathan has an oddly gentle creepiness that can't be replicated, and Gideon has a cute, timid feel to his portrayal of Ernst. It's like a panther falling in love with a puppy.
I love how into it the audience is! I've performed for audiences that are, like, dead! So I love how reactive they are.
The ironic part about this scene is that this is early late 19th, early 20th century Germany, and "30 years from now," Hanschen and Ernst would, in reality, probably be prosecuted and even sent to a concentration camp for being gay.
*in newsies voice* WHO ASKED YOU?
"I LOVE YOU HANSCHEN! AS I HAVE *NEVER* LOVED ANYONE!"
*PAUSE*
"...And so you should."
I finished playing Melchior in Spring Awakening yesterday, and to say it was amazing doesn't even come close to describing it. It really is a magical show.
Ernst is adorable... I MUST BE IN THIS SHOW!
The version of DWSA of Word of Your Body is definetly my favourite. This one is feels too much like a comedy... I mean that's not a bad thing, but I feel like DWSA version was more romantic and Andy and Joshua had so much chemistry on stage
Josh Castile and Andy will always be my fav hanschen and Ernst pairing
Tiffany Wernik me too man
I personally love the deaf west pairing mainly because Ernst's voice just makes the scene perfect in it
Interesting Fact: In "Totally Fucked", the stage manager was told not to call the next light cue until the final clap died, to give off that "awkward" moment.
justinisaqueen hahaha
after only ever listening to the soundtrack a zillion times and watching this for the first time this scene is 14 times better than i could have ever imagined omfg
why hanschen soundin like snape
bwhaaaaa
A couple summers ago my community theatre did this show and I was volunteering there and got to see the show a bunch of times. One time during "Totally Fucked", I was sitting in the front row and the guy playing Hanschen got right up in my face when they all went "blah, blah, blah"
Actually it's the entirety of the conservative parentocracy. The teachers are as much to blame for what goes down.
Gideon and Johnathan are sooo cute in this show!
At 3:45 you can hear someone say "oh god"
They know the gay is happening and that it will overcome us all "THY SHALL SUCCOMBE TO THY GAYE!" ~probaby jesus
best scene in the whole show lmao
OMG seeing Totally Fucked be performed is incredible!!
seriously this is the most well casted show ever. not hamilton, not DWSA, not Lion King- this show is the most perfectly casted show known to man and I will fight
riles k don't know if I agree but then again everyone has their own opinion
riles k I disagree with the hamilton part, but definitely correct
I agree for the most part, but if I do prefer the DWSA version of this song. I love the original cast to bits but Andy Mientus is my favourite Hanschen, this version feels slightly too much like a caricature. But that's all I would change about the original
I just realised I put 'this song' when there's a few songs in the clip XD I meant Word of Your Body Reprise
excuse you you take that back about dwsa
This is my first time actually watching this after listening to the soundtrack about a million times, and holy shit! It's so amazing!
Hänschen is kind of a badass xD
ikr
Jonny B Write is so perfect in this role wowza
my friend from High School just got cast as Ernst in a local production of this. He pretty much is like the epitome of masculinity, and i won't lie that i might giggle a tid bit when he has to kiss whoever was cast as Hanschen...my immaturity coming out
GIVE US AN UPDATE ON HOW THIS WENT
But me, I'm a pussycat. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I DIED LAUGHING
Hanschen's so creepy... but cute. Though Ernst is the cutest
Hanschen is my favourite character, he's so funny bless him
Gotta love Ilsa's dancing during 'totally fucked' she rocking out to the beat while everyone is either sitting still of singing
:-/ Wendla deserves better
i'm auditioning for the part of Hanschen tomorrow, for a friend's production of SA, and i am totally loving this character and how arrogant he is... ;)
i love whoever wrote the music to this! clearly they were no prude! i wish we could do this for my school musical but unfortunatly going to an anglican school it has a -10 chance of happening :P
"30 years from now this night will seem unbelievably beautiful" Hanschen
I love Jonathan's smile when he says "you're fucked" ;)
hanschen sounds like severus snape
Ernst sounds like Salad fingers
I JUST FELL OFF MY FUCKING CHAIR OH MY GOD
9
Hanschen reminds me of Dr. Frank-N-Furter from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Gideon is the cutest
Gideon Glick is literally the softest human being on earth.
Ben Moss and Andy Mientus from the tour cast will always be my favorite Hanschen/Ernst pairing.
seeing how extremly controversial and provoking the original Play was when it was written, I think the Music is only appropriate in portraying this. Furthermore, if anything this Musical & the play show that keeping T
teenagers "safe" by keeping them ignorant just isn't a good idea. None of this should be shocking (as in cannot be shown) to someone much older than 13.
munstergirl25 I'm fourteen and I've known about this stuff since I was around eleven. Still, a lot of peoples parents don't tell them stuff
"Oh God!"
"Mm I know!" XD 😂
THIS IS LIKE THE BEST THING EVER !!!!!!!!!!THIS ENTIRE PRODUCTION.
Christine Estabrooke is an amazing actress!
Word of Your Body reprise is stunning
@puddleducks05 I think the reason why they move so weird and that the songs are so "modern" is to universally apply this to any viewer. It allows the message to transcend the normal boundaries set upon it by time and space, which makes the theme more applicable to people today. So, yes it's random and somewhat unorthodox choreography, but it makes the show that much more artistic.
I love you Hanschen, as I've never loved before! As you should.
~ A little full of youself there aren't you Hanschen?
@WendIaBergman this musical is awsome!!! thank you for posting it!! :D
@Luch1323 Ernst says : Oh I love you Hanschen, as I have never loved anyone. and Hanschen says : And so you should.
"Oh god."
Haha, at my school, there was controversy over "Oklahoma!" (two curse words, hell and damn). We're doing Les Mis this year, and in our school, that's edgy. -_-
Christian Marshall well ur fucked alright
Christian Marshall wow don't do this show
they are awasome, cute, sweet *millions of other words*
i loved how the whole audience groaned when Wendla's mum said "and the nausia"
gideon is adorable, very cute
There's nothing more entertaining to me than watching Matt Doyle as Otto.
I love how there is serious lighting this entire show, then the party comes out.
that NO was so aggressive but also so cute
best Hanschen and Ernst to ever be cast
*Andy Mientus and Joshua Castille happens*
In the reprise, I don’t understand why the audience is laughing so much it’s not that funny. I saw the dead west version first and it’s so weird in comparison

It's Johnathans portrayal
dude it's fine to laugh at some of the jokes and some of the way they delivered the lines in the Word of Your Body Reprise but like, c'mon. cheap laughs at "how the gays act" but there are some serious moments in it too. feels like they're making fun of them. which may have been the point, I'm not sure. just seemed like allll the laughter is too much.
True, when i watch these clips of this song i never think of the fact that they are gay, i only think about how cute and romantic this scene is.
I just realised that Ernst and Hanschen are the only 2 people who get a happy ending in this musical
Thank you so much for uploading this!
i love how the girl who plays ilse is totally flipping her hair around during totally f***ed. it's like a character on its own!
I freaking love Hanschen. "You can't be serious." xD so epic.
Lea Michele is a phenomenal actress.
the fact that all she did was lightly tap Wendlas face is sooo funny
Thank you SO much for posting this!
This first song in the Welsh production....my friends and I were in hysterics.
I love hanschen and ernts's scene the best..
bahahahaha Ernst face at 8:15 is priceless.
Totally Fucked is the best scene ever!!! When I saw it on Broadway, I actually screamed "FUCK YOU!" to my mom as an April Fools Day joke when I saw it on Broadway!!
ok but jonathan breaking character in totally fucked is so funny
I love the guy next to the cameraman who keeps pfffffaaaahahaha-ing
@FMAguru2007 I'm sure it is! Maybe something to do with the stripping off of the past? The constraints that restrict them from growing, maturing? Something metaphorical!
THE VINEYARD SCENE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY STOP LAUGHING OH MY GOD
+Theordoreqaz its hilarous tho?
+Ela K it's not supposed to be though. At all.
Theordoreqaz i guess it depends on how much you interpret it. pretty much every version ive seen on the vineyard scene has the audience laughing at one point.
+Theordoreqaz tbh in the musical adaptation of the play the vineyard scene just. wasnt taken seriously. so they probably /did/ mean it to be funny, but youre absolutely right treating this scene like a comedy is rly annoying. the only thing is the writers arent free of blame

Jon is became Beautifull! I want that is became a regolar in glee...
@acciomockingbirds Yes, Matt Doyle was Otto at this performance, and Jenn Damiano was Martha.
every line by hanschen has me cracking up :D
@sokkie1111 I'm afraid that this is probably not likely. Even several of the creators said that Hanschen will probably pretend that this never happened, and even if they were carrying on a relationship, the prejudice of the time would make their lives incredibly difficult, especially in forty years or so.
This is such a romantic scene between the two guys
oh jonny b.. i love you
Hahaha, that's kinda the point! :P I love Hanschen and Ernst...
What great choreography
no offense, but whats with the dance moves in this musical? especially at 2:26
2:58 is that Melchior sat up on the wall in the right hand corner? what is he doing?
I'm trying to figure out if the movement they do throughout the show is supposed to be symbolic for something. I feel like I missed it if it is.
Totally Fucked is the best song ever the entire show!!
I don't know why but Blondie's voice gives me the creeps.
Me too!
Trust me, I don't like the "pretty dancing". I was trying to figure out why they were doing that. Thank you for answering my question. That thought had not occurred to me.
Hänchen means chicken in German, I believe.
yes its chicken. but his name is hänSchen with a "s"
Frühlings Rolle Yeah, I know. But It's a very similar name...
Alanna R. No it doesn't. It's just a really old German name. I believe there's no meaning to this name. It's not a typical name. Sounds kind of strange to Germans. :'D
It´s like a variation of Hans, more like a nickname. And Hans still exists although its of course not popular.
I think you mean Hähnchen, that means chicken xD
7:09...johnny...but....your hand??xD
Does anyone know what Wright says after "But what about the..?" He says something else and I've been trying to figure it out but it's hard to hear clearly. (This is after the famous "skin off the cream" line, if you're not sure what I mean)
Matt Doyle? He is amazing!!!!!
I adore Hanschen!
He says: As you should.
totally f****d is the best song ever!!! i can't wait to sing it!!!
my bad was that Matt Doyle that played Otto?
@calmyafarm there was a production in melbourne about 4 months ago!
These two are the best (Gideon and Jonathan)
"Did you write this?"
...
"YES!"
