I always thought, the episode of Glee where Rachel loses her virginity to Finn would have been funny if the cast was around the bed singing I Believe with Sue in the background doing the sermon. I thought they would pay homage to Spring Awakening.
I had a chance to read the actual script, and the reason they use hand-held mics (which is in fact specified in the script), is that when they sing, they're supposed to suddenly turn into 'modern day teen rock-stars', or modern day teens singing about they're inner most troubles and thoughts. The songs are almost like a separate entity from the play portion of the show. I'm not sure that this translates very well, but none the less, that's the intention.
Its wonderful to be able to see maturity from actors like this. Its wonderful to see them so dedicated to a role. Props to Lea for putting herself out there like that.
This is a gorgeous and cohesive musical! I love the modern flares through out the play! The whole sex/rape scene was beautiful! Because these are professional actors, they get so into the characters they play that they don't really think about it as being awkward. To me, the hardest part would be having your family see it. So off stage, that could be a little awkward. I wish they would tour this again. I can't wait for the movie! (Hopefully it's the original actors and isn't going to be cleaned up. To be accurate and good, the movie will have to be rated R.)
Moisturize Me but she had no idea what sex was so she didn't know what she was consenting to she didn't know what was going on he took advantage of her naivaty she was like a child
Not sure, but maybe the rape conflict is not really whether she says yes or no, but whether she even understands the consequences of her actions. Also, whether or not he knew if she understood the consequences...? Maybe? Does anyone get what I'm talking about?
It actually does have to do with the musical. When they sing without the mics, they're just sort of telling the musical's story having to do with students in the 1800s. But when they take out the mics, they're representing all teenagers, especially those of the present.
I've played Wendla and it was awkward the first few rehearsals for the cast AND crew AND directors! It took me about a two weeks not to burst into giggles every single time my Melchior touched me and when we got ready to do the actually sex scene we didn't get it down until three nights before opening night because its just so WEIRD. Its nerve wracking but its something as an actor you have to be completely ready to deal with.
I'm reading the comments and I'm scared to watch this because these are my two favorite people. EDIT: I had to reflect on what I watched, and I'm shook
In the play it's actually rape, but they turned it into consensual sex. definitely best to separate the two in your mind because it's a good musical, and the play itself is really good. but it's meant to be rape so they treated it pretty badly
It's technically rape if you remember how she doesn't actually know it's sex or know what's going on, while Melchior does. I believe the original musical version actually did make it more... clear that it was in fact rape (the song ended with her scream and the lights going out). I heard one of the main people who produced this wanted to make the scene more beautiful...
Wendla find out that Martha is being beaten & sexually abused by her father. They refer to Isle being cast out due to a similar situation. Wendla, being ignorant, wants to understand because she has never had any such thing in her life. She wants to know what it is like so she can understand. Running into Melchior and when it comes up, she asks him to do it so she can see what it is like because trying to beat herself doesn't evoke any response. It's about growing up and understanding the world.
I've done that scene as a monologue before from my understanding she has never felt loved and she thinks that if someone hits you it means they love you, when she is talking to Martha and Martha says how her dad abuses her but that he says he loves her and God says it's ok I think it gives her the wrong idea. Also I think she's kinda a masochist :P
To all of those who are sitting there going ewwwww......... and u should take this scene out, you clearly dont understand the world of theatre, none of us actors will ever have sex on a stage and neither are these guys, we respect it more than that , (and im pretty sure is you saw it in a movue u wounldn't mind) its just brilliant acting, and no we cant just take this scene out because its like the pivotal point of the play, because as they then say, "our bodies are the guilty ones.... " I
I love this scene because she does consent but it's a beautiful scene of two teenagers not knowing at all what they are doing and it's sad and yet beautiful in many ways
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS! my audition is tonight and i had NO IDEA how the characters were. but you have the whole damn play in quality YOU ROCK! btw im doing it at my college. NO CUTS!!! NO CENSORS!
I love how you had to put a disclaimer there. hahaha. :) Thank you for posting this! I'm in the audition process for this show. I've been called for Anna and Ilse, so I must "study!" I'm super stoked to even have a shot at being involved in this glorious production though.
I'm a very LDS person, but i absolutely love this show, mainly because i can relate to Mortiz's situation as well as I understand the innocence of the show.
you uploaded these on my birthday, and it's one of my favorite musicals... i missed them by two days on broadway (them as in lea and jonathan but Kyle Riabko did a fantastic job, anyways... thanks for the upload, best unintentional birthday present ever!!
I literally have to watch this like 3 times a month and listen to the soundtrack everyday. i love it so much. I would love to be in the play...but im a litle too young. I wish i could go see the play live.
If you are going do this musical then you need to be prepared to do it. I think you can slightly adjust this scene but I think it is more disrespectful to water it down. That is why this should be done at college or community theatre NOT HIGH SCHOOL! Because you would have to tone it down.
I don't understand why people are saying this scene is awkward .. I'm no musical buff but even I can see it is a very beautiful scene and don't think there is any awkwardness whatsoever =X
So I read about Spring Awakening on Wikipedia and they said that the "sex" scene was changed to hint at but not directly say that Wendla was raped. So was she raped or did she in a way give consent at the end?
i realize this is an old comment, but i wanted to give my two cents. I think the purpose of the scene is that it was rape in that she didn't understand what was actually happening, despite the fact that she gave consent in a way. So really, it actually depends on your own interpretation of it. It also depends on that actress's portrayal. When I saw the show, the actress portrayed naivete, not knowing what was actually going to happen, which is just supposed to make you think and ponder and maybe feel a little uncomfortable. Thats kind of the premise of the whole show - to make you feel bare and raw.
***** it may not be. i think the fact he took advantage, in a way, of her naivete, could be seen as rape. I personally have never let those thoughts ruin the beauty of the scene. I do think it was beautifully constructed and blocked and acted. but what happens in it is starkly contrasted. its always been a big ambiguity for me, ever since seeing the show. But you're right, she does reference it in "Whispering" and the way she talks about it sounds like consent. but it still sounds like she didn't know what she was consenting to. I don't know. Thats why I love this scene and the whole show. It just leaves me which this big, "wow" feeling.
Actually, it's 100% consensual and is 100% meant to be taken that way too. Lea, in multiple interviews, and the producers have said that yes, in the original book it was rape but the musical isn't going to play it that way because of the difficulty blocking/staging and explaining it.
Consent can only be given by someone who *understands* what they're consenting to- otherwise, what's the point of bothering to ask their opinion?Wendla would NOT have consented to pregnancy. The play clearly established that Melchior KNOWS sex leads to pregnancy, and that he KNOWS that most people his age aren't aware of that. She gave him permission to make her feel good. She didn't give him permission to impregnate her. He did something sexual to her (came and impregnated) without her permission, which is the definition of rape. At the VERY least, he was careless and selfish, knowingly putting her life, health, future, and reputation at risk without her consent.
in previous scenes Melchior is always saying to put yourself in the womans position and not to preasure but Melchior was forcing Wendla to have sex and i also feel sorry for Wendla cause Melchior knew what they were doing and the consequences of thier actions while Wendla does not know
As much as I love this play, I have NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK HE IS DOING on the podium. ...Stretching? A badly choreographed metaphor of him also being curious about his body? Although he is all-knowing?
@tothestage913 They actually had the rape included in the workshops, they changed it because they wanted the audience to like Melchior and feel bad for him in the end.
I did not expect this scene! Is it wrong that I got all hot and bothered and NOT because it's a sex scene but because the actors, Lea Michelle and Jonathan Groff, did such a wonderful job at 1) being professional and 2) make it SO believable? It's a good thing it's 4:25AM and everyone's sleeping because I'm technically at work and I'm not sure if this would be considered "not safe for work". Damn this is a wonderful and deep play! But I probably would have been 100x more shocked in reality.
AHHHHHH!!!!! I was not at all expecting for his hand to go down there!!!!!!!! I had heard that her breast were exposed in this scene, but not that!!!!!!
Almost any Broadway show they put the microphones there, I'm guessing it's something to do with the acoustics but it has nothing to do with the actual musical.
@leanybugrox ITS NOT RAPE!!! There is an interview with Duncan Shiek (the director/creator) Where he states that in Earlier drafts of the script they thought of makeing it rape, but decided against it, and what made it into the final show was consensual sex, although reluctant, they both agree, I repeat IT IS NOT RAPE!!!!!!!!
It's unfair. I was hoping to see the full musical of Spring Awakening here since I'm from a far away continent, but I can't open this. Damn age limit. A beautiful musical btw.
Oh my god, enough! It isnt freaking rape. You cant tell me some people never act reluctant their first times. especially if it isnt planned and is in the heat of the moment. Shes scared of what will happen, but when she pushes him away and he stops to look at her, she slowly pulled him back. Maybe he initiated it and she didnt want to at first, but she did want him. Its possible she was denying him right b4 it happened because she was AFRAID of having sex. Doesnt mean she wasnt willing.
@WendIaBergman I'm pretty sure it was still date rape off Broadway, that is why they changed the lyrics of Whispering and switched out There Once Was A Pirate/ Once Upon A Pirate Night with The Guilty Ones when the show moved to Broadway, to reflect the change from a date rape to 'making love'.
@WendIaBergman I agree, besides, the song "The mirror-blue night" talks about Melchior's mixed feelings, and trying to find himself, even though he knew what they were doing, it was equaly intense for him.
I strongly prefer the musical’s interpretation of the sex scene. Yes, in the original play it is rape. But too often, especially in these times, (hetero) sex is/was viewed as something that a boy “does to” a girl. A large part of the play is that the girls are feeling these same stirrings and awakenings within themselves, just like the boys. I prefer the interpretation that, though she doesn’t fully understand it, and DEFINITELY doesn’t understand the consequences, Wendla has these same desires and passions, and *chooses* to give in and be swept away by them. TLDR: Girls get horny too!
@FMAguru2007 No I see what you mean, but I think since Melchior knew what he was doing it would make more sense for him to just convince her instead of making her ya know? Anw the workshop audios are on here(TH-cam) just type in "Spring Awakening Workshops".
It amazes me that people are even questioning the fact that this is rape. Rape does not have to be a violent beating of a woman into submission and then violating her. She didn't want to do it, she said no several times. She was raped.
So...was this actually rape? Or what? Btw thanks for posting, I've been wanting to see this. Also, Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele have AMAZING chemistry, even though he's gay, he's convincing and passionate. AWESOME.
I am doing an essay about the adaption of the play to musical at uni. The writer simply decided it would be a better than rape to make it more romantic. I have acted in the play version as Wendla and personally I prefer it as the Romantic version :)
@meghanthepirate That's why I said, he took advantage of her innocence but he didn't force her(which is what rape is),she gave in to what she was feeling, she didn't know the consequences cause she was innocent so therefor he to advantage of her innocence but not of her physically.
@WendIaBergman And moreover, the story takes place in the 19th century, people were getting married very young. Remember Rose from Titanic, it was even 1912, she was 17 years old and about to get married, seems incredible to me..
I always thought, the episode of Glee where Rachel loses her virginity to Finn would have been funny if the cast was around the bed singing I Believe with Sue in the background doing the sermon. I thought they would pay homage to Spring Awakening.
Yes that would have been one of the best things ever.
Brian Husar I think a good spring awakening homage would have been to have Rachel and Shelby sing mama who bore me together or about each ither
just me ljb¥^gil ploy igboigkgigkgoulgg6j7g
Just when you think the sex scene is over they do it again lmao
No matter how many times i watch this musical, I'm always shocked when it gets to the sex scene.
little did the audience know....it was about to go down
everyone keeps talking about the sex acting ... what im impressed with is how well they freeze
groff: "because it's GOOD? BECAUSE IT MAKES US *FEEL* SOMETHING?
everyone in the audience: come, cream away the bliss~
I had a chance to read the actual script, and the reason they use hand-held mics (which is in fact specified in the script), is that when they sing, they're supposed to suddenly turn into 'modern day teen rock-stars', or modern day teens singing about they're inner most troubles and thoughts. Its wonderful to be able to see maturity from actors like this. Its wonderful to see them so dedicated to a role. Props to Lea for putting herself out there like that.
Sometimes I feel bad for Melchior and then I remember what he does in this song
This is a gorgeous and cohesive musical! I love the modern flares through out the play! The whole sex/rape scene was beautiful! Because these are professional actors, they get so into the characters they play that they don't really think about it as being awkward. To me, the hardest part would be having your family see it. To be accurate and good, the movie will have to be rated R.)
But she isn't raped bc he is like are you okay and then she bursts into song and after that shes like i think so
awesome is me it was rape
She consented tho. Willingly.
Moisturize Me but she had no idea what sex was so she didn't know what she was consenting to she didn't know what was going on he took advantage of her naivaty she was like a child
Even though Melchior knows what sex is, he doesn’t know all the emotional baggage and need for consent, they are both confused in different ways
I've watched this musical a hundred times and it never gets old.
This scene is so beautiful! Lea captures her character's innocence being lost so very well.
Not sure, but maybe the rape conflict is not really whether she says yes or no, but whether she even understands the consequences of her actions. Also, whether or not he knew if she understood the consequences...? Maybe? Does anyone get what I'm talking about?
This is the most beautiful, intimate scene in the entire musical. They're both such passionate actors.
Man, 'Mirror Blue Night' is such a showcase for Groff's stunning voice!
It's stupid how people criticized Lea for her pictures in GQ, when she already did Spring Awakening for how long.
If i was on that little hanging platform i would be crying bc i hate things like that. i would be so scared that i would fall lmao
Am I the only one that would be more freaked out about being on a moving platform then, showing my breast?? I am? OK
To the person who said is it Rachel from Glee, it's actually Lea Michele. Rachel's just the name of her character.
Two years later I still know this dialogue word for word.
It actually does have to do with the musical. When they sing without the mics, they're just sort of telling the musical's story having to do with students in the 1800s. But when they take out the mics, they're representing all teenagers, especially those of the present.
That was more of Lea Michele than I needed to see. But still wonderful acting, amazing play. I love it!
It's about growing up and understanding the world.
Chorus: And now our bodies are the guilty ones...
Moritz: ENOUGH!!! ENOUGH!!!
Me: *just about peed my pants*
Please someone tell who is playing Moritz hes my favorite for "Don't do Sadness" out of all the versions.
Gerard Canonico
Thank You!
You're welcome
I couldn't breathe during the I Believe scene. It was so well-done.
I've done that scene as a monologue before from my understanding she has never felt loved and she thinks that if someone hits you it means they love you, when she is talking to Martha and Martha says how her dad abuses her but that he says he loves her and God says it's ok I think it gives her the wrong idea. Is it bad that I can't take his dance that seriously
No I was laughing the whole time
To all of those who are sitting there going ewwwww......... and u should take this scene out, you clearly dont understand the world of theatre, none of us actors will ever have sex on a stage and neither are these guys, we respect it more than that , (and im pretty sure is you saw it in a movue u wounldn't mind) its just brilliant acting, and no we cant just take this scene out because its like the pivotal point of the play, because as they then say, "our bodies are the guilty ones.... Did she do this before Glee? If she did, it proves he was capable of being an awesome actress.
Kurt Baumann Yes his was before glee
I love this scene because she does consent but it's a beautiful scene of two teenagers not knowing at all what they are doing and it's sad and yet beautiful in many ways
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS! my audition is tonight and i had NO IDEA how the characters were. but you have the whole damn play in quality YOU ROCK! btw im doing it at my college. NO CUTS!!! NO CENSORS!
Did you get the part?
the part when their listening to eachothers hearts beating reminds me of Tarzan..
I love how you had to put a disclaimer there. hahaha. :) Thank you for posting this! I'm in the audition process for this show. I've been called for Anna and Ilse, so I must "study!" I'm super stoked to even have a shot at being involved in this glorious production though.
Lmao, well the way he was acting you have to admit no one would really think it. He is just amazing.
you don't need fancy dance numbers, just repeat simple choreography like in SA. It's brilliant!
I'm a very LDS person, but i absolutely love this show, mainly because i can relate to Mortiz's situation as well as I understand the innocence of the show.
I need a glass of water after watching the hayloft scene lol gets me every time!
Lea is honestly amazing in this play. I love her so much!
I remember playing Wendla when I was in college. Awesome part to play
Am I am the only one here who absolutely loves The Guilty Ones? :/ And I agree, I have no idea how they freeze that well!
I go on as Wendla in 2 weeks! Both excited and terrified.
Ik this is really late but how did it go?
+just me It was fantastic! keep an eye on my channel and soon I'll be uploading a highlights reel
AbStar921 Ok, I will
This scene makes me think that Spring Awakening is better than Rent... i didnt think it was possible
you uploaded these on my birthday, and it's one of my favorite musicals... i missed them by two days on broadway (them as in lea and jonathan but Kyle Riabko did a fantastic job, anyways... thanks for the upload, best unintentional birthday present ever!!
i really find the picking up the mics things hilarious lol
I love Melchoir and Wendla XD "Sex" on stage would definitely be fun to put in a resume of special skills o.O
They know how to act, They do very good in their profession, admire them.
I literally have to watch this like 3 times a month and listen to the soundtrack everyday. i love it so much. I would love to be in the play...but im a litle too young. I wish i could go see the play live.
22 people dont appreciate art.
Shayna Lebowitz lol 3 months later it's still 22
1 year later 26
8 years later and it's 27
These guys amaze me. Especially when they freeze, that's hard.
If you are going do this musical then you need to be prepared to do it. I think you can slightly adjust this scene but I think it is more disrespectful to water it down. That is why this should be done at college or community theatre NOT HIGH SCHOOL! Because you would have to tone it down.

it may not be. i think the fact he took advantage, in a way, of her naivete, could be seen as rape. I personally have never let those thoughts ruin the beauty of the scene. I do think it was beautifully constructed and blocked and acted. but what happens in it is starkly contrasted. its always been a big ambiguity for me, ever since seeing the show. Chell J She put his hand on her boob

Lol when lea looks right at the camera.... Did she notice you?
Your description is prime!
I think I saw more of Lea Michele than I thought I would...LOL
Lea is such a good actor!!! Jonathan too!!!
Everyone's going on about I Believe, but what about Mirror-Blue Night? What a gorgeous song!
Why was Jon dancing the way he was dancing that way when the bridge was rising?
in previous scenes Melchior is always saying to put yourself in the womans position and not to preasure but Melchior was forcing Wendla to have sex and i also feel sorry for Wendla cause Melchior knew what they were doing and the consequences of thier actions while Wendla does not know
As much as I love this play, I have NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK HE IS DOING on the podium. ...Stretching? A badly choreographed metaphor of him also being curious about his body? Although he is all-knowing?
what show is this? like from what day?
That's so unfair! Lea showed hers.. Why can't we see Jonathan's?
@tothestage913 They actually had the rape included in the workshops, they changed it because they wanted the audience to like Melchior and feel bad for him in the end.

Brilliant actors !
Whoa this scene is beautiful because hard to do in front of everyone
HAHAHAH i remember seeing this on a school trip and none of us new that they did this and all the parents were like :O!!!
AHHHHHH!!!!! I was not at all expecting for his hand to go down there!!!!!!!! I had heard that her breast were exposed in this scene, but not that!!!!!!
@ChiliJalapenos Of course they're acting! This isn't porn ya know.

@uniquelike Where did you do this show?
Does anybody see the platform moving when they are singing The Guilty Ones?
Oh my god, enough! It isnt freaking rape. You cant tell me some people never act reluctant their first times. especially if it isnt planned and is in the heat of the moment. I wonder if it was hard to get used to the swinging motion of the swing bed thing...
I love the "Please verify that you are at least 18 years of age" button I had to press to watch this. Haha
I strongly prefer the musical’s interpretation of the sex scene. Yes, in the original play it is rape. @FMAguru2007 No I see what you mean, but I think since Melchior knew what he was doing it would make more sense for him to just convince her instead of making her ya know? Anw the workshop audios are on here(TH-cam) just type in "Spring Awakening Workshops".
I love this musical. Its so real and relateable
i love jonathan groff and lea michelle!!! this is just awesome! new fave musical! :D
@MiffyxBri216 is it the musical or the play version? because they're different. in the play it's rape, in this it's more consensual

Also, Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele have AMAZING chemistry, even though he's gay, he's convincing and passionate. AWESOME.
my goshh, i bet those people swinging the thing from side to side felt so awkward the first couple of times
I am doing an essay about the adaption of the play to musical at uni. The writer simply decided it would be a better than rape to make it more romantic. I have acted in the play version as Wendla and personally I prefer it as the Romantic version :)
Don't Do Sadness has to be about the best song in the whole musical
When I saw this I only think glee. Like if Rachel finally got on broadway and so did Jesse and it would be really awkward. Lol
This is so well done, I just love Lea and Jon!

@meghanthepirate That's why I said, he took advantage of her innocence but he didn't force her(which is what rape is),she gave in to what she was feeling, she didn't know the consequences cause she was innocent so therefor he to advantage of her innocence but not of her physically.
@PhantomKing88 You are very welcome, how did your audition go?
@WendIaBergman And moreover, the story takes place in the 19th century, people were getting married very young. Remember Rose from Titanic, it was even 1912, she was 17 years old and about to get married, seems incredible to me..
