8 Pound Algonquin Park Brook Trout!

  • In early May of 2018 my young son and I went another quest to find giant Algonquin Park brook trout. In the process I caught the biggest brook trout of my life!
    26" long with a 16" girth, this fish was over 8 pounds in weight!
    What made it even more remarkable, it was a wild fish, not stocked.
    Outside of Nipigon, brook trout of this size are rarer than a unicorn and are the angling equivalent of winning the lottery. This truly was a special fish!

    Unreal fish. Although you should really avoid holding larger fish by the gillplate like that. Awesome stuff though, I've always wanted to make an interior trip!

      Yup, 50/50 it’s a dead fish after that, but hopefully not. I’m sure at 7-8lbs it has spawned a bunch and was close to dying anyhow in that small body of water. But I’m sure mike won’t do that again, certainly a trophy of a lifetime.

    Nice fish! You should never pick a trout up by the gills though if you are releasing the fish.

    What an amazing fish. I'm glad to see you release these monsters back into the wild to breed. What size and type of line do you use for this kind of fishing?

      Thanks Ash. The big ones always go back. I use 6lb clear monofilament for this type of fishing. Pretty much the only scenario these days where I don't use braid.

      Hi John, totally different lakes this year. And yeah, I was forced to reschedule twice because of the late ice out. Everything was at least 10 days behind compared to last year.

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late reply, very sorry! Brookies are extremely difficult in the heat of the summer, but it's a great time for pike and bass. Farm, Crotch and Booth lakes (especially Booth) are outstanding and very easy access. Cheers

    Sensational brook trout! You had great success using Canadian made lures . Have you tried the newer ridgebacks with the u.v. coating and noticed any difference ?

      Hi Jeff, I use the Ridgeback spoons in every color they make. I haven't noticed the UV coating makes any difference.

      Not a record, but it was easily the biggest I've ever caught in my life, and I've fished for brook trout all over Ontario, Quebec and Labrador.

    I'm going to Algonquin Park in early August. What kinds of fish could be caught there? Is there a special spot/location you enjoy your fishing at Algonquin Park?

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robin, Algonquin is primarily a cold water fishery that supports excellent populations of trout. However, mid summer they are extremely difficult to catch. There are a select number of lakes that support excellent pike and bass fishing. Those are the lakes you need to focus on in the summer if you want to have fun catching fish. One great option is Booth lake easily accessed from access point number 17. Hope that helps, cheers, Mike

    • @robinkim5719
      @robinkim5719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow. Nice fish. Even puts Sutton River trout to shame. Plan on trying to duplicate your success next spring, but in the meantime, any advice on fall brookies in Algonquin? Say, early October.

    • @dariocrisci4362
      @dariocrisci4362 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately you won't be able to duplicate that success in early October; I believe Brook Trout fishing in Algonquin Park ends with the end of September. Have to keep the trout population thriving somehow!

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alfred, Dario is correct, the trout season closes the end of September. Some years it can be good that week, other years not so much. With the hot weather and warm temps we've been having my guess is fishing in late Sept might be difficult this year.
