Oh my God Nathan as a poet and lover of poetry this was what made me fall in love with taylors art to begin with way back in 2012 and it's so amazing to see someone recognise that. By the way Taylor herself is very aware of it and has made Allusions to it in her work for example in the song the lakes which is just magical. Thank you for taking the time to actually listen and grasp that. 😊
Stan is actually a portmanteau of the words Stalker + Fanatic = Stan....it is a word first popularized by rapper Eminem...he has a song called Stan which is about obsessive fans living with parasocial delusion.
Another thing is Taylor herself has said she wrote poetry before writing songs and some songs started as poems before she composed melodies. She has poetry she writes outside of her music
Evermore is absolutely, without any hint of doubt for me, the absolute BEST Taylor Swift album. There is one track on the entire album that I'm a bit meh about... But honestly, when I don't have the energy to skip it, I'm never irritated by it. It is the perfection of the Folklore album, which still had a smidge more youth to it. I don't know if you guys have covered the Folklore album, but yes Nathan. When she talked about the bonus track, The Lakes on the Long Pond Studio sessions, she directly references Wordsworth (even references him in the lyrics of that song), Keats, Shelly, Colderidge, etc., and the song is about the artists community they build up around Lake Windermere in the Lake District in England in the mid/late 1800s. So she is heavily influenced by the Romantic movement and those poets 😊 She also has a song on Evermore that draws many allusions from The Great Gatsby. Honestly, I think you would ADORE Evermore, both of you 🥰
@@char4980 I think long time fans of Taylor will probably gravitate towards some of the older albums for nostalgia value. Which I think is completely understandable 😊 Evermore is just so emotionally mature, even though she is quite vulnerable in some of the songs. I just relate to it so completely as an entire album 😊
I also can't believe it's taken so long for you to react to this song. It's a top 5 Taylor song to me. It's speculated to be about Emily Dickinson & her sister-in-law, Sue. This song is pure poetry and the folksy vibe is everything for me.
I definitely connect this song with an earlier time. Likely Medival or even earlier to Anglo-Saxon times. The themes of paganism and arranged marriages and stones where people go to worship is far too ancient for Dickinson's time period. But it could definitely be a mash up of the Dickinson situation set in another time period 😊
@@emmavink I believe it was also inspired by the poem, Compassion by Miller Williams. "Where the spirit meets the bones" is a line straight from the poem. So I think it can have multiple meanings - I've just seen a lot of analysis of it being specifically inspired by the romance between Emily & Sue. Taylor even approved the use of the song for a streaming show about them.
Thanks guys and Natalie for this...Evermore deserves more respect than it got...love ALL the songs...picking my favorite is like picking who is your favorite child...soooo...got to say try Evermore featuring Bon Iver...but then again...Cowboy like me...hmmmm...thanks ya'll..
❤ your reaction...shocked you have not reacted to Carolina...Evermore featuring Bon Iver...Cowboy LIke me...Coney Island..Renegade by Big Red Machine featuring Taylor Swift...I know I am not a Patreon, (can't afford it), but...😅 just shooting my shot
I can't choose between folklore and evermore. Together they are my "favorite album." Ivy is the only evermore song that I currently see on your TH-cam page so I don't know which others you have already done, but my top songs are Willow, Champagne Problems, Tis the Damn Season, Tolerate it, No Body No Crime, Happiness, and Coney Island. (And don't forget the bonus tracks.)
I just found your channel through your Florence and the Machine reactions and I HAVE to say if you like Florence and Taylor you literally NEED to listen to Preacher’s Daughter by Ethel Cain it’s literally so good it’s a concept album with a whole plotline it feels like watching a movie!!!❤
Ok I must chime in, I've always had a crush on Nathan lol. You look like a barely older version of my boyfriend 😂. And you're really cool. Ivy is on my list of favorite songs ever not just Taylor's. Two different bridges! Taylor is the queen of bridges. A ton of people think evermore is the better album. It is a fantastic album, many amazing songs. But for me, it is a close second to folklore.
that's interesting! though you two are English-speaking you didn't get the origins of the "Stan" thing :D something tells me, the reason is generation as a cultural phenomenon in the global age, otherwise it's too weird that I got it as a 30 yo Russian lol yes, the meaning is hardcore fan, but originally it was a song by Eminem, where he tells the story of a person named Stanley "Stan" Mitchell who claims to be Eminem's biggest fan. it has been suggested the name "Stan" is a portmanteau of the words stalker and fan, though it is unknown if the name was chosen with that intention. the eponymous character's name gave rise to a slang term, "stan" has since become viral, it refers to overzealous, maniacal, overly obsessed, entitled fans of a celebrity or personality. moreover, the term has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary in June 2018

8:31 fucking hell Ryan😂 Nathan's commentary was so passionate...and then there's you
It’s what I do 🎉
Thank you for my song ❤️❤️❤️ So glad you loved Ivy!
Thank you Natalie 😊

Couldn't have put it any better - this is an excellent explanation and evermore is my precious.
i go back and forth between speak now and evermore as Taylor's best album ever.. evermore is just too good

A most beautiful song 💗💗💗Thank you Natalie and Ryan and Nathan!
You should react to more of evermore...It's her best lyrically..

If you haven’t heard it yet- Nathan would love ‘The Lakes’ from Folklore. It even has a Wordsworth reference 😂

YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO HER ANOTHER SONG FROM EVERMORE, " COWBOY LIKE ME" IT WAS SO SMOOTH AND A LULLABY TO EARS. 🤎🤎🤎
Yes! A Stan is a hardcore fan, megafan, superfan etc. I think the term comes from the Eminem song of the same name

Evermore is the best album ever made and Ivy is my all time favorite song 🥹
There’s a game people play (there’s videos on TH-cam) called Taylor or Shakespeare and they give you Taylor lyrics or Shakespeare and you guess
“Stan” came from Eminem’s song “Stan” and just means a really big fan. More so than other fans of the same thing.
It's believed/suspected this song is about Emily Dickinson and Sue Glibert
