    Inspired by your videos, I began my Vanda Adventure several months ago. Thus far, it is marvelous! I am sure I will face unexpected challenges - but challenges are ... invigorating, no? Anyway, I have already discerned that my Tubtim x is likely going to be a larger size than I had expected, so I am checking out , in preparation, what you have done withVandas that have grown wonderfully - but are a bit TOO tall for their positions. This video of yours was JUST what was needed to give me heart.
    Please know how much you are helping with the videos!

    So glad it was you who cut the vanda and not me. I don't think I could do that. For some reason I always think they have feelings and it would break my heart to do that. Whom ever you sent the cut piece to hopefully will enjoy the vanda. I know I would. Thank you for the video I really enjoyed it. Have a great day and enjoy your orchids.

    We hardly notice the differance because she still looks wonderful and surely she feels renewed and stronger. Nothing like a good prunning to refresh a plant. But nobody dares prunning a Vanda like you because nobodyelse has them that big. Great vídeo, Bumblebee, thank you.

    An excellent orchid grower with a heart. Thanks for sharing such valuable information. I am an indoor orchid-growing enthusiast/hobbyist in Ohio; while growing vanda is somewhat tricky in my environment, I'm slightly pleased with the cattleyas that give me beautiful blooms. It looked so big that I thought you'd need the aid of a tree surgeon! Good to hear that it bloomed for you in no time after the pruning. I prune back my Hoya Bella every year but this year I was the most brutal and there is hardly anything left of the plant. Sometimes we have to do these things and I know that my other plants will enjoy the extra sunlight that was being blocked by my huge Hoya Bella.

      The good thing about large and well established plants is that they can be quite forgiving. My big Vandas block a lot of light, too, and I can only imagine how much light a large vining Hoya bella blocks. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it will be as forgiving as my Vanda. Its spike decided to branch out which is a first. :D Happy growing!

We see huge vandas like this in the videos from our TH-cam friends in Florida, USA when they visit nurseries but the fact that you grew this one on your window is quite impressive. • @nitawal
    @nitawal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow!! Tell me something though, would leaves continue to produce where you cut? Or were you depending on the keiki to take over?

    • @bumblebeesorchids3408
      @bumblebeesorchids3408  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, leaves wouldn't continue growing right at the top. If there hadn't been a keiki in the first place the mother plant would - most likely - have started to produce a new keiki due to a mechanism called "apical dominance". It's a plant hormone based mechanism due to which a monopodial orchid is usually growing upwards towards the light in one direction without branching out. When the apical dominance of a Vanda or another monopodial orchid has been suppressed, disturbed or interrupted keikis begin to develop sooner or later.

  • @susanzomaya273
    @susanzomaya273 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand how you felt as I cut my 6’ Vanda last year. It, too has bloomed and the keiki is getting new roots and looking healthy. How do you get so many keikis and beautiful roots? Your plants are amazing!

    • @bumblebeesorchids3408
      @bumblebeesorchids3408  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susan, thank you very much! :) To be honest I love spending time with them but don't enjoy repotting/watering, so I don't do all too much for them. The plants that like what I do stay and the ones that don't are passed on to someone else or die (which I of course try to avoid). This kind of natural selection lead to a bunch of resilient individuals on my windowsill. Happy growing and have a very nice weekend!

    Hello Bumblebee, I absolutely adore your vanda collection. I have 2 vandas, but they never bloomed for me yet. I would like to know whether you use rain water or filtered water for your vandas please? My water is quite hard and since my vandas require large volumes of water, I just use my tap water for them. Since its too hard water(about 300 ppm), I am worried that the roots might burn if I add fertilizer on top of it. Do you think I should use rain water with fertilizer once a month or so and use tap water for the rest of the month? Thank you.

    • @bumblebeesorchids3408
      @bumblebeesorchids3408  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much, abirami! Here's a playlist which contains information on watering as well: th-cam.com/play/PLL3HGZzNUvCGaHon7D3RHHoXei2i6Wz03.html
      I use reverse osmosis water since my water is quite hard as well, but I add some tap water so that I don't have to produce as much ro water, too. Using rain water with fertiliser and then tap water for the rest of the month sounds like a reasonable compromise. I guess you don't have enough rain water to use it all the time?

    Hello. I see that recently your uploads have slowed down a little. Is everything alright? I just have a quick question. I see that you sometimes use those wooden baskets/planters, of course an nice and compact container for the roots . Do you have any idea where to get such baskets/planters? Or perhaps it is a handcrafted item.

    aww to be honest I felt kinda bad when I saw you cutting it .. would have been so nice if you were able to keep the whole plant if you had a balcony or a garden where it could grow freely haha plus it was such a rare and enormous specimen size it was a shame...
    but I understand how unpractical it must have been.

      I know! Believe me, I felt pretty bad, too. But I couldn't grow it outside due to our cold winters. I'm quite confident it will be as big in one or two years again. :D Happy growing!
